What did everyone think of the Strokes on Letterman?

Thanksgiving special. First time to see the Strokes. Yes, I live in a bubble. Well, the music was not bad. Had a rockabilly tinge...new development, or old standby? Otherwise, mindnumbingly pleasant. To a Lou Reed fan. But that lead singer is a dud. I wonder what all the fuss is about. He was not as dreamy as promised. He seemed so lethargic like he was going to collapse on stage, and not in a good way. Discuss.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 30 November 2002 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

He was not as dreamy as promised.

But did he show his ASS?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 30 November 2002 04:32 (twenty-three years ago)

ARGH

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 30 November 2002 04:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem. It's like *I* see anything in his ass.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 30 November 2002 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I could rephrase that...ah, nevermind.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 30 November 2002 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

""To a Lou Reed fan.""

That's the first tim I've heard that in a looong time....

B, Saturday, 30 November 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

"But did he show his ASS?"

I don't think so, unless I am getting it mixed up with his face, which is not unlikely...

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 30 November 2002 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't get why people want to nail Casablancas. He's probably the worst looking guy in the whole band. He looks like John Frusciante circa the smackhead days, with hollowed-out eyes and bad hair.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 30 November 2002 05:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm more of an Albert girl.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 30 November 2002 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

A girl I knew was so excited to see them when they came through, played the cd constantly, bugged me to give her a poster from the record store I worked at at the time, anticipation deluxe. I saw her after the show and asked how it was - "It was AWFUL! The lead singer has ACNE!!!" She never brought up The Strokes again (Jack White on the other hand...). ROCK IS BACK!

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The lead singer has acne is like the best reason I've ever heard to dislike the Strokes.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:19 (twenty-three years ago)

All the other reasons have been even more confoundingly stupid, right?

OMG THEY ARE ROCK STARS BUT THEY ARE NOT PRETTY! THEY MUST BE OXYCUTED

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Oxycuted = the best word ever invented for an ad.

Strokes hatred seems silly cos they are pretty harmless. EXCEPT FOR THAT ACNE.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

At least it's not bacne. (I'm assuming.)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:36 (twenty-three years ago)

they must be bored of playing the same songs for last ten years

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 30 November 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

two=ten?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 30 November 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

it seems like they have been around forever, sorry, but a new song might be nice

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 30 November 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

bacne

New best word ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 30 November 2002 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike White is not goodlooking either. I saw him in person! Free show!

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 30 November 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Both of tha White Stripes look like Campbell Soup Kids.

cc, Saturday, 30 November 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

The guy from Soundtrack of Our Lives looks like a shop teacher.

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 30 November 2002 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Dammit, Michael, you STOLE MY LINE!!!

Did they make the PLAY WITH THE BAND?!?!?

They made the Jesus and Mary Chain PLAY WITH THE BAND.

kate (dali), Saturday, 30 November 2002 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

circa the smackhead days, with hollowed-out eyes and bad hair.

This is URGENT and KEY for the fancying on my part.

Didn't fancy Jules at all when he was cleancut and bright eyed. Now, two years on, when he's looking rough as fuck and generally dragged through a hedge every which way, OH YEAH BABY FUCK YEAH, ALRIGHT, BRING IT ON.

Ha-hem. I am high on paint fumes, yes.

KATE, Saturday, 30 November 2002 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Poor Julian, of course he has acne. He's like 12. I just realised today that I am a total perve for fancying him because HE WAS NOT EVEN BORN WHEN STAR WARS CAME OUT!!!

I was very impressed today, when I was packing back at my house, my ASS hit the stereo by accident and Transformer just mysteriously started blasting from my bed. What this has to do with the Strokes, I don't know, but I'm sure someone can figure it out.

(NB, It's really fun to annoy yer housemates by dancing around, high on paint fumes singing Last Nite in the style of the Swedish Chef...)

kate, Saturday, 30 November 2002 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Star Wars Release Date: 25 May 1977 (USA)
polyphonic's Release Date: 11 Dec 1977 (USA)

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 30 November 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

"Did they make the PLAY WITH THE BAND?!?!?

They made the Jesus and Mary Chain PLAY WITH THE BAND."

They didn't do it. But I've heard that Letterman and co. like it when the act 'spontaneously' 'jams' with the house band... The Strokes are too cool for such shennanigans obv.

Oh and above that should be Jack White I suppose, not some strange combinations of Jack + Meg = Mike (?)

They were on SNL repeat today...Why does Meg White's "drum" "playing" highly annoy me?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 1 December 2002 06:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked them a lot! I liked the singing.

maryann (maryann), Sunday, 1 December 2002 06:48 (twenty-three years ago)

mary that would be because she sucks

Josh (Josh), Sunday, 1 December 2002 06:52 (twenty-three years ago)

DUDE!!! that totally violates the Rules Of Letterman. You HAVE to play with The Band. I don't care if yer dad owns the Ed Sullivan theatre, you STILL have to play with The Band.

Gah, who do they think they are, The Rolling Stones refusing to go on the rotating stage and wave on Sunday Night At The Palladium? Conceited fuckers...

(And I'm still upset about the lack of ass. Even though I obviously didn't and couldn't show it, cause, like we don't have Letterman in this country. What would be the equivalent? Jools Holland? How about Jules Casablancas on Jools Holland (now that's some slash I don't want to read) and Jools erm... "enhances" all their songs withe endless pianowank tinklying... yeah!)

kate, Sunday, 1 December 2002 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

liza was great, her voice and attitude anyway, though the skirt was a bit ruff on the is

Queen G (Queeng), Sunday, 1 December 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i love meg's drumming. jack was singing really crayzee! what a wierd-o

john mccain is a very unfunny fellow

was that a repeat broadcast? the one from last week with dunst was pretty good (also old i think)

ron (ron), Sunday, 1 December 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it was. McCain is kind of a stiff but the casting decision to have him play Ashcroft is perversely hilarious.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 1 December 2002 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

We discovered last night that Tom Petty's American Girl sounds like every Strokes song ever.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 2 December 2002 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

No, just "Last Nite." The intros are exactly the same. I realized that a few months ago, when my dad was playing a Tom Petty best-of in the car.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 2 December 2002 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard a rumor last night (from someone who "heard from a very reputable source who heard from another very reputable source") that the Strokes didn't actually write a single lick of Is This It.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 2 December 2002 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

dissin' somebody for acne or bacne is completely hackneyed and wackne.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 2 December 2002 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, whatever, zitface.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 2 December 2002 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking Acne Sides: Julian Casablancas vs Nelly vs Brian Adams

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 December 2002 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Meg's drumming = classic. I'm convinced that she's using the drumsticks just for show and it's her hair that's doing the actual drumming.

Curtis Stephens, Monday, 2 December 2002 02:56 (twenty-three years ago)

The more I look at Nelly, the more I feel that it is a shame that there is already an MC who used Noriega as a namesake.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 2 December 2002 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Bryan Adams wins wholesale, I mean do you SEE his face? Vanessa Williams also has horrible skin but as a gurl she can hide it better with make up.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 2 December 2002 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

well, Ally, I was gonna compliment you on the "American Girl"/Strokes connection (dead on), but now I just don't know...yer being all kinds of mean to people with poor complexion.

and I'm NOT a zitface! And I ain't been for years!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 2 December 2002 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh come now, the "American Girl" thing is like half a century old and boils down a "chiming octave in conventional rhythmic pattern" shocker (cf any rock band ever).

I'm fine with Meg's drumming on record -- it seemed on SNL that the sound (and song selections) were just sort of bad for it. Drumming that rudimentary sort of needs to be up in the mix, whereas whoever was handling it seemed to be trying to take it down so no one would notice. (Note to whoever did the sound: when there are only three elements in a mix you can't really put any of them in the "background.")

I saw the video for "Hard to Explain" last night and was reminded why I like the Strokes. Bookending bits of Courtney Love claiming the Strokes and the Hives are an inspiration to us all sort of dampened my enthusiasm, but nevertheless. Also their whole "we don't really want to be here" schtick will continue to work for me so long as the songs are so sweet and mournful.

Ha, this is the thing that's gone horribly wrong with nu-rock: the better examples of it are laid-back and doe-eyed (Strokes and I suppose a few White Stripes tunes) and yet everyone is lasering in on the hyper and hyper-annoying Hivesy end. (I enjoy a few Hives singles but no, please no.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 2 December 2002 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Note to nu-rock: stop rocking!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 2 December 2002 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

so you want bleh-rock instead of nu-rock? And Tom Petty is evidently the Justified Ancient of Nu-Nu!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 2 December 2002 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

so you want bleh-rock instead of nu-rock?

This is what happens when you want Morrissey but get Jesus Jones.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 December 2002 03:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The Justified Ancient of Nu-Nu is the funniest thing I've heard in days! Even if it comes from conversation with COOTIE HEADS WITH ACNE ARRRGH.

Dude, seriously, I like the White Stripes and to a lesser extent the Strokes but I'd still rather hear the Hives. They're much funnier and they just have much more energy at least 75% of the time. Maybe it's not very ILM to like some sort of showmanship but I'd rather see the Hives live than the strokes.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 2 December 2002 03:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd rather see the Hives live but after awhile on record the Hives seem kinda shrill. The Strokes change it up more moodwise, so I'll give them the pick albumwise (not that I couldn't use a little more uptempo from them). The jury is still out on the White Stripes with me. My girlfriend put their song "Stop Breaking Down" on a mixtape for me and that was pretty great, but I still think their songs get kinda monotonous.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 2 December 2002 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I get that shrill thing from the Hives. The "energy" very quickly begins to seem pointless. Whereas the serious wistfulness of "Hard to Explain" strikes me as the best thing about the entire nu-rock bundle.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 2 December 2002 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Honestly, all three bands are starting to stick in my craw (whereas before I either tolerated or genially ignored 'em). I guess there's more range between 'em than between the alt/grunge hypes of ten years ago, but it all still feels so pointlessly limited somehow, one endless shrug.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 December 2002 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Meg drumming live at the free show and it was the same piss. I mean it's fine if you don't have talent but to be so proud and happy about it, then, that's another thing altogether. I'm hoping the 8 yr. old girl drummer from the Trachtenburg family will blow Meg out of the water at the Fez Christmas special.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 2 December 2002 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah that'll show her. smelly old meggy meg poopy peg!

ron (ron), Monday, 2 December 2002 05:06 (twenty-three years ago)

nabisco is on point
