He loves Whitney's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" in 1989, so I'm guessing it's K-pop, pre-Bangerz Miley.

Imagine Dragons

Maroon 5. Though that might be better suited for a 2012 Patrick Bateman.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 12 October 2022 22:27 (one year ago) link

If he was a hipster, he'd be the type of guy that really likes Vulfpeck.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 12 October 2022 22:29 (one year ago) link

Imagine Dragsons seems a good choice.

I'm not sure Dua Lipa or kpop is because Bateman loved really naff critic unfriendly music and in this poptimist climate of the past decade, I don't think they would be uncool.

I could certainly see Bateman jamming Nickelback though.

I contend that a 2022 Bateman would not listen to music, but wax endlessly about his favorite podcasts.

He probably really likes the last John Mayer album.

"Do you like Joe Rogan?"

Patrick Bateman would love that intro to Shape of You, he would tell Alexa to turn it up.

We could ask Bret Easton Ellis now.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 12 October 2022 22:39 (one year ago) link

See now I think Bret Easton Ellis might name an artist that's too poptimist friendly, like Taylor Swift.

Drake

Patrick Bateman is the one person that isn't on the Grammys committee that actually listens to the music of HER.

LOL

Begging him to kill you faster before Dan Carlin says "QUOTE UNQUOTE" again.

Their early work was a little too EDM for my taste. But when Random Access Memories came out in '13, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 12 October 2022 23:49 (one year ago) link

A 21st century Patrick Bateman would be into shit like “Hey Soul Sister” and “Fireflies”.

always love these "let's project stuff onto random artists we don't like" ilm threads

Glad you approve.

I thought we're mostly projecting stuff onto the fanbases of random artists we don't like. Completely different.

I always thought that the music monologues in that book were slightly odd. Presumably Bateman was quoting from, or imitating, the contemporary US equivalent of something like The Face - his persona revolved around knowing the right wines, the right restaurants, having the correct opinions etc - but the contemporary US equivalent of something like The Face would never have run wordy essays on Phil Collins and Huey Lewis and the News. Given the time and place, New York in the 1980s, he should have delivered essays about Sonic Youth or Glenn Branca or John Zorn etc instead. The rest of the culture quotes he delivers in the book are more-or-less spot-on, but the music doesn't feel right for a fashionable upper-middle-class stockbroker.

I can't tell if it's a cue that Bateman was woefully out of touch, or if Ellis realised that if he had Bateman rhapsodising about Tonal Plexus the mass audience he was going for would have been baffled, or if it was Bateman being sarcastic, or what. The music he talked about didn't fit the rest of his persona.

A modern-day Bateman would be indistinguishable from Ilxor. He would listen to Charlotte Adigéry. e.g. the discussion at the bottom of this page here:
thread to dis hyped releases that you don't get/don't like/wanna complain about

"I really want to like the Charlotte Adigéry album, Topical Dancer, because the production sounds amazing, but I am just not finding the wit in these songs that others are. The lyrics are kind of like annoying tweets and for me they reduce the songs to novelty. Take a track like "Thank You," which I listened to again this weekend, where the sarcasm is extremely drawn out and you get the point immediately."

NB that's not a personal attack; you could probably quote me out of context and make me out to be a raving psycho. It's just that that discussion struck me as quintessentially Ilxor.

I don’t think too many fashionable 1980s stockbrokers listened to John Zorn (or would cultivate Zorn/Branca/SY opinions for appearances’ sake).

The finance people I have been aware of in my life have always had very little taste in/of/for art of any kind. The ones who were seen as wild weirdos by their peers were into, like, jam bands. (The owner of Relix magazine, when I worked for the company, was an aging finance bro who rolled his own money into a dream of magazine publisher-hood, and rooked a bunch of his buddies into investing. The company went under in early 2009 when they no longer had money to invest.)

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 13 October 2022 18:52 (one year ago) link

I only read half the book, around the time it came out, but my recollection of the musical commentary was that it was supposed to illustrate another aspect of this guy’s “soulless” pathology that he was super into Huey Lewis and stuff like that.

The song I've listened to the most in the last 5 days: "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus.
