Four Horsemen is Metallica's best song, right?

I think so, then again, Kill'em All is their only album that I own (because I downloaded it from Napster. Ha ha ha, what a rebel I am, sheesh).

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it isnt, and 'The Mechanix' or whatever its called is better anyway.

Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 30 November 2002 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say it's pretty far from their best song, honestly. I'd sooner cite "Master of Puppets" or "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 November 2002 05:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, scratch those....it's "Creeping Death."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 November 2002 05:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex you've just listed Metallica's three immortal songs, and for the moment I agree with you re Creeping Death.

BTW Helltime, nothing from Kill'Em All touches their best. You've really gotta hear their later stuff. (er, but only up to the Black Album of course)

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 30 November 2002 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the problem with Four Horsemen is that its really not Metallica's song, persay. Its Dave Mustaine's "Mechanix", as previously pointed out, with different lyrics that were penned after he was kicked out. Mustaine then recorded his version on "Killing Is My Business", and its argurably better and more raw then Metallica's version. Your mileage may vary.

Well, the Metallica I like has Mustaine in it, so it kinda goes to figure. But it's strange then, that I think Megadeth blows (except for that song they had on the "Last Action Hero" sdtk)

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 06:16 (twenty-three years ago)

'Master of Puppets'

DavidM (DavidM), Saturday, 30 November 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The best Metallica song is "The Small Hours" and that isn't a Metallica song either

meirion john lewis (mei), Saturday, 30 November 2002 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

"harvester of sorrow" is quite good, but the tinny production on the "...and justice for all" album ruins it.

"master of puppets" and "seek & destroy" are probably my favourites.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 30 November 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

but all the metalheads in my school played 'fade to black' at the talent show

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 30 November 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

swizz beatz f ja rule and metallica - we did it again

s trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 30 November 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

you said it. the only metallica record i own is "garage days rerevisited" and i don't really feel the need to buy any more.

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 30 November 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"Breadfan" is the tops cover, because it doesn't vary from Metallica's song structures, and I like that.

I've been on an "Orion" kick for something like 5 years now, so that's obviously the best song.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 1 December 2002 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Frayed Ends of Sanity is the closest to tech-metal they got. Dyer's Eve is the thrashiest thing they did after Kill 'Em All, after they actually had some chops. The production doesn't really bother me, it's harsh to listen to for a long time though.

Most of the non-singles on Master of Puppets are underrated too (especially Orion, I agree...when it fades in at the beginning it sounds like it should be a soundtrack for a futuristic anime or something).

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 1 December 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

As far as Metallica covers go, I highly applaud their cover of "Breadfan" (ever hear Budgie's original? eeeek!), their Misfits medley is respectable, their cover of same's "Die, Die My Darling" is great, all though is sounds more like James is singing "Don't cry 'Tomato Baby'" instead of the proper lyrics.

While I heartily applaud anyone for furthering the name of the almighty Killing Joke, Metallica's cover of "The Wait" is largely sub-par.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 1 December 2002 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Since I personally prefer Hetfield once he decided he was a pirate, I'd have to go with "Whiskey In The Jar," "Hero Of The Day," "King Nothing" or "The Unforgiven" (which I dub thee, btw).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 2 December 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

A tape of Sopranos just had "The Memory Remains" playing at the Bing, and dammit, those guitarz sound good! So "Horsemen" has to get through Marianne Faithful now, too.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 2 December 2002 01:46 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
MEGADETH ROCKS!ANd metallica song"The Four Hoursmen" is the same song as Mechanix but diffrent lyrics...And METALLICA ROCKS TOO!!!!!!!!!!!THeir Both Awsome!

WarHawk, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Disposable Heroes".

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Damage Inc."

piers (piers), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't shoot me, but: I think The Unnamed Feeling is one of their best tracks. Just listen to the interaction between the insanely sawing guitars in the left & right speaker. Incredible stuff. Thrashmetal as it is meant to be. Really.

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Damage Inc." for speed
"Fade To Black" for tunefulness/emotion
"The Call Of Ktulu" for "epic-ness" (just barely beating "Disposable Heroes")

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Whiskey in the Jar," which they didn't write, is Metallica's best song. "Fade to Black" is their second best (if its great part didn't end halfway through, it might be even better than "Whiskey in the Jar," but I doubt it.) The best song on *Kill 'Em All* is "Whiplash," due to its speeding up of Focus's "Hocus Pocus" riff (and it wasn't even on the original version of the album, if I remember right!)

chuck, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

How about their best guitar solo, if that's not getting too geeky? I'm going for either "Disposable Heroes" or "Shortest Straw".

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously too geeky.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Their cover of "Breadfan" or "Creeping Death".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Whiskey in the Jar," which they didn't write, is Metallica's best song

I'm slapping my head in disbelief.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Creeping Death" I'd say is pretty close to being Metallica's definitive (though not necsessarily their absolute best) thrash-period song.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, "Dyer's Eve" might be my fave song, but the justly-maligned AJFA production production pretty much ruins it. I'll go with "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

J (Jay), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
Fade to Black it is I have to say. The sheer emotion of it forces me to state that.

Gothallica!

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

'The Thing That Should Not Let It Be'
'Got to Get you Trapped Under Ice'
are also good tunes.
