Does Québec yé yé count too ? I like most of what I've heard by Les Sinners, and "Je cherche" by Les Lutins, who were all like 14 years old at the time, is fun. Most of it was either shlock or tossed-off French renditions of US hits ("Fun Fun Fun" recast as "Fume Fume Fume", and similar nonsense). There was this one guy (his name was Gilles or Denis or something) whose job was to crank out French translations of songs (he'd come up with dozens of them every week) , and teenage singers would be sent in the studio in the middle of the night so they could get the record on the market as quickly as possible and make whatever money there was to be made. The yé yé vs chansonniers (pop vs folk, say) split at the time was absolute. The whole thing was dead by 1968.

There's this absolutely hilarious clip of a very young René Angelil (Céline Dion's manager/husband) as a member of Les Baronnets, lip- synching to "C'est fou mais c'est tout", their version of The Beatles' "Hold Me Tight", on a TV show, and they're doing these little dance moves that look pretty absurd to start with, except that the guy in the middle had only been part of the group for a day or two, so while the other two are doing their thing, this particular guy is looking in the opposite direction at some off-camera person showing him the moves, and he's trying to follow, but in the most feeble, out-of-sync manner imaginable - it's a freaking classic.

A plug for the original "ye ye" girl: I began buying Francoise Hardy albums in thrift shops twenty years ago because she had such cool cover photos (especially the one where she's in a packing crate) and would be just what I'd want to look like, were I a French girl. I can't say all of her music is that great--got too MOR for me. Lately I'm worshipping at Juliette Greco's feet, if only because she was so gorgeous in Cocteau's "Orphee." I've even dipped into Dalida, though to begin down that path surely leads to perdition. And I'm still trying to learn French after all these years...

X. Y. Zedd, Friday, 25 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Anyone know anything about Brigitte Fontaine? I heard a couple records by her, from the late '60s i guess, that I thought were great...one was sort of pretty straight pop, the other had backing by the Art Ensemble of Chicago...I don't have either myself so I can't remember much else, sorry.

duane zarakov, Friday, 25 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And what about Dominique A? I heard that song on Hyacinths and Thistles on the radio once and I remember liking his voice.

tarden, Saturday, 26 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Brigitte Fontaine: amazing. Never know where to look for her in shops, she's so wide-ranging. Still just discovering her, so expert guidance IS needed...

X. Y. Zedd, Saturday, 26 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'll back Steve on the April March front. Some of her albums are a little hit or miss, but 'Paris in April' is a winner. The same seven songs, sung one side in English, the other in French. The aforementioned 'Chick Habit/Laissez Tombes les Filles' and a host of Gainsbourg covers.

She's played with Jonathan Richman, The Headcoatees *and* she sings the title credits for 'I M Weasel' on the The Cow and Chicken Show, which wins her extra cool points in my book...

nickie, Saturday, 26 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

yeah magma, they're something else alright. You reckon Heldon're good, huh? i've never been able to find anything by them...what do they sound like anyway?

d. zarakov, Saturday, 26 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Brigitte Fontaine albums I'd recommend are 'Comme A La Radio' and 'Brigitte Fontaine Est Folle'. (Sometimes listed as 'BF Est...') The last Katerine album (a double, 'Les Creatures' and 'L'Homme A Trois Mains') shows strong influence from the schizo avant gardism of Fontaine's Art Ensemble of Chicago years.

Personally, I'd recommend you avoid her recent work with Etienne Daho ('Genre Humaine' etc).

Momus, Saturday, 26 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Mmmh. A few short notes, hardly about yeye though... Dominique A is great. "Il ne faut pas souhaiter la mort des gens", it is delectable. Also seek his muse Francoiz Breut. Normandy blues, sort of. And Yann Tiersen, who did some music for the film "La Vie rêvée des Anges". Katerine's "Je Vous Emmerde" was indeed a big hit recently, the hook is quite irrestible. Brigitte Fontaine is a great lady, from the true 68 crew, like Higelin - "Brigitte, toujours au fond des cafés..."

I reckon Alain Bashung is criminally unknown outside of France, as he would have fitted perfectly on a label like Mute... As for older music, there is always Barbara...

Simon, Sunday, 27 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Thanks, Momus, for the Brigitte Fontaine recommendations--I agree about "Comme A La Radio," and want more, more, more... Everyone probably knows this already, but she also did some recent work with both Stereolab and Sonic Youth: "folle" she is, and suis generis (the original genrefuck?). (By the way, Momus, I thought for sure you'd contribute to the "switched on" thread.)

I'm also glad Ethan put in a word for MC Solaar; the one summer I spent in France he was what I most looked forward to hearing on the radio. He also made one of the best, most minimalistic videos I've ever seen. (This was the summer when "Suck My Pussy" was a Top Ten Song--used to love hearing the radio and television announcements.)

April March is one of those people you wish so hard were just a little bit better, though she does such occasionally perfect pieces of pop pastiche you can't help but want to rally 'round her.

Claudine Longet has never been given her full due. I'm afraid Andy Williams tainted her career more than some silly accidental murder... If you want to go even farther back, there's Charles Trenet, whose complete oeuvre I plowed through recently. He was probably the progenitor of Jacques, Serge, and all the rest. "Chanson," however is whole 'nother story; Trenet is best in the earliest recordings when he's still both gritty and apparently influenced by Bing Crosby (who, after all, supposedly invented microphone singing as opposed to stage singing).

There are of course also many African artists who sing in French at least some of the time. I couldn't begin to start listing them, especially since I'm so far from my music collection. Montreal had a big African music festival a couple of summers ago when I was there, so those good Canadians must be keeping the faith.

I don't read any music magazines, listen to the radio, go to concerts, or even try to keep up with most current music any longer... so I'm grateful for all the comments on this thread and others. "I'm not an expert, but I play one on the Internet."

michael wells, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

There is a lot of good French music: - Serge Gainsbourg is the God of French chanson, pop and rock. The lyrics of his album "L'homme a tête de chou" are the most erotic I know in the history of pop. They are very poetic, play with the meanings and sounds of words and are still very explicit with many sexual connotations. Gainsbourg was like a beat, taking drugs, always behaving badly in public. He died with less than 60. Quite good English adaptations of his songs have been released on two records by Mick Harvey (he used to play with Nick Cave). After that there is of course Jacques Brel. Maybe even more poetic, but a little more conventional. A very sensitive chanson-writer. Contemporary artists to check are: - Bashung: a little bit the heir of Gainsbourg. An intellectual rocker. - Murat: more in the vein of Brel. Sings beautifully about love. Very melodic. A very soft and warm but interesting voice. - Miossec: his debut "Boire" (1995) features very good poignant contemporary French songwriting. - Negresses Vertes: their album "Mlah" (ca. 1990) is a classic. Most of the nine (?) members are of North African origin. The music is a little like gypsy rock, very good instrumentalists. - Diabologum: "Le goût du Jour" (1994) is the best French indie album I know of. Very arty, like a French Velvet Underground. Nice female voice. - Tue-Loup: French slow-core group similar to Idaho, Red House Painters or Slint. Very slow, captivating, slightly melancholic stuff. - Kat Onoma: from the sound they sometimes remind me of Joy Division. Dark music from Strasbourg. Very Indie.

That's probably #2 for me -- fuck is that song gorgeous. Weirdness: I was just in the middle of listening to an Alan King mix when I started thinking about tracking down Dego's DEMF set to hear that very song in the context of the rest of that set. Just as I was about to stop King's mix, "Deep Burnt" began to slip in.

#1 is "Disco Circus" by Martin Circus. Weeeeeeeee!!!!

Hmm, I have to back Sasha here and say Dutronc is tops! I'm also partial to most of the tracks on the Ultra Chicks compilations.
Jacqueline Taeib is superb, I am listening to her 'Complete Masterworks' right now.
Does anyone know much of the (60s) singer Tienou? I've heard one song, 'Pop Art', and it's astonishing.

As for Keren Ann, I have her debut CD and find it quite ordinary.
For contemporary French female singers, I'd recommend Fabienne Delsol and Camille.

Amatuer(ist)... no I don't have it on CD yet unfortunately. I downloaded it from someone on soulseek, and, as with anything I download I have full intention to purchase it... if only I could find it! amazon.fr is out of stock.

I'm happy to pass on copied files to people who are keen to sample ... just let me know if this discussion board is friendly to filesharing talk before I say anymore.

Oh, and BTW the emusic.com link someone gave above has a lot of Brigitte Fontaine mp3s available. When you join for a free trial they give you 50 free mp3s... you could get 2 or 3 entire albums of hers that way.

AND there's a seller on ebay who sells the Femmes de Paris compilation (new) which has many of the ye-ye girls mentioned above. I bought the Gentlemen De Paris comp. and was very happy with it - has Gainsbourg, Dutronc, Antoine, Edouard (who parodies Antoine), and the very expressive and highly entertaining Jacques Filh.
