Who are the scumbag flippers on Discogs.com

This is a thread to post names, links, and examples to sellers on discogs who are asking ridiculous prices for albums and/or buying records to flip. It's a RSD inspired, ole timey name and shame.

First up is chancing bastard Terrapin_65 trying to get $75 for the Jazz Dispensary album just released today. His list price was made before stores even opened and was twice retail. Fuck this scumbag!

Not really sure what’s accomplished by advertising for these sellers by highlighting and linking to their pages, unless this thread is one of those “tell me where people get drugs so I can avoid those areas” type things.

At this point it seems like a huge % of what comes out on all the various RSDs ends up coming out as a non-RSD wide release later on. For that reason it’s hard for me to get worked up about flipping these days since so many releases are essentially just marked-up advance copies.

sry to be pedant, but REselling.

the rub: these "limited" rsd releases are supposed to be 'for the fans bro' or whatever, but end up in the hands of resellers exploiting fanbases.

i like the spirit of this thread, but you know me: i love the nightlife*, i love to boogie.

Jazz Dispensary do not release these after their initial pressing. I’m irritated with Jazz Dispensary for making these releases so hard to get. They can sell 10k of these. Why don’t they press 10k instead of 3500? They may not sell 10k in one day, but they’d sell quickly im sure. I would love to understand the factors for determining pressing quantities. It’s this behavior by labels that fuels human scum to buy specifically to resell for profit.

I guess the results I would like to see are: labels not releasing artificially scarce product, record store day and all distributors banning / fining anyone affiliated with a record store selling over retail price online, and flippers lose money and stop seeing vinyl as a profitable market.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 27 November 2022 22:36 (one year ago) link

you're doing yourself a favor by not buying those jazz dispensary comps. the pressing are bad, the weed culture references are cringe, a lot of those records aren't hard to find, and all that stuff ends up getting reissued separately soon after, sometimes on even better comps. see for example the bob shad / mainstream ones reissued on wewantsounds.

I don't see any Jazz Dispensary album

and it turns out $75 was an attractive price for someone

the late great, Sunday, 27 November 2022 22:40 (one year ago) link

like those are eight good tracks off of eight $5 jazz funk albums. if you're willing to wait and dig and spend $40 you have a cool quirky set of relatively unknown jazz funk albums. or you can spend $40 on pink splatter vinyl with cringe weed references. there's nothing wrong with compilations and i actually have quite a few, but honestly that's not a compilation i would stand in line for

calstars, Sunday, 27 November 2022 22:45 (one year ago) link

Why don’t they press 10k instead of 3500?

imho this relates to my idea that they are trial balloons / hype machines for other forthcoming compilations and reissues

the late great, Sunday, 27 November 2022 22:48 (one year ago) link

sorry i realized i’m confusing mainstream and milestone. all the stuff on jazz dispensary comps has the same parent label as milestone, concord music group. there were some other (different) hard to get comps with tracks by artists on mainstream (like, say, dave hubbard, roy haynes, buddy terry) and that’s what i was thinking of that ended up getting reissued on mainstream

anyway my bigger point is the same in both cases, a lot of stuff is not that hard to find (the original jazz dispensary vol 4 is a notable exception) and the stuff that is tends to get reissued soon after

the late great, Sunday, 27 November 2022 23:20 (one year ago) link

RSD sucks.
I found a rare garage 45 this weekend that I'll probably sell cuz it's worth a little bit of money, and I can use that money to buy more records that I will enjoy more.

hi ian. just curious- ever buy stuff with the intention of trading it? i used to do that with random 12" singles i'd come across; i didn't care about them, but i knew amoeba music would. of course, i was a thrifter always trying to buy on the cheap, so i just refused to pay over certain prices on certain stuff - wouldn't make sense to buy something for $3, haul it later to amoeba only to have them give me $2 in store credit. i was also doing it solely to fuel my collection.

finally, remember friend: never get high on your own supply.

I dipped into pretty much the one shop I go to today cuz I decided to I did want the "Clear Spot" 2 lp thing (which actually is very awesome) and but so there was were these fucking no-name goons in there breaking down their Friday scores & routes of attack & Discog inventories & so on and it was so fucking gross and soul-crushing frankly hearing them basing everything on the resell value & "limited quantities" and their goddamn worthless musical tastes it effectively killed my desire to be there and it was everything in my power not to grab the ten buck Isley Brothers record in front of me (that had probably been there for weeks) and whip it at them shouting it would be a zillion times more profound if they bought and spun that instead of whatever colored vinyl, obi strip sportin', forced scarcity bullshits they were hyping up to each other.

Barf.

Thank you for the laugh I needed. Exactly how I’ve felt when I’ve attended any RSD, which has turned into, more of a ‘why would I buy that reissue, my old ass vinyl or CD still sounds great.’ But there may be one or two single releases I wanna get and enjoy. And most of all, since I’ve moved from a big city to a small community, I mainly just wanna support my local store, as they get some fun, reasonably priced hits and dusties yr round. But there’s always one or two goofballs saying this stuff verbatim.

BlackIronPrison, Monday, 28 November 2022 02:15 (one year ago) link

My best friend is a record dealer and antiquarian bookseller, a type I usually avoid like the plague, but he genuinely loves and enjoys music— when he plays me records, he never talks about how much they’re worth unless I ask him. Sometimes he’ll say “this one is quite rare but i love it so i won’t sell it” and it’ll be like the saddest doo-wop tune you’ve ever heard

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Monday, 28 November 2022 02:23 (one year ago) link

hi ian. just curious- ever buy stuff with the intention of trading it?

Hi Austin.
Only rarely, and only if I see something radically under-priced -- this usually means weird variant pressings that not everybody knows to look out for (well-known ones include the Robert Ludwig mastered Zep II, Simon & Garfunkel's "Bookends" in mono, that version of "Hot Rocks" with "shelley" in the runout on side IV and a longer version of wild horsees, first little feat record w/ green label...) So, If I see something like that, priced for $10 when I know it's worth significantly more, I'll pick it up and sell it.

This is not that common a thing for me these days, since I don't go record shopping IRL that much anymore.

ian, Monday, 28 November 2022 02:46 (one year ago) link

What really drives me fucking nuts is the dudes with barcode scanners scanning every book at the thrift store.

ian, Monday, 28 November 2022 02:49 (one year ago) link

I have found the Jazz Dispensary pressings to be fantastic each and every time. They sound great, they look great, and yeah, they have cringe weed references, but i've bought $5 Jazz Funk albums before and they're 7 absolutely garbage songs you wouldn't want to hear twice, with one great song on side 1 and one decent song on side 2. These JD compilations are great for jazz noobs like me to put on and not have to worry about filler / dud tracks.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 28 November 2022 16:47 (one year ago) link

if you want to live in a world where bad jazz funk music exists and you get to be mad at discogs flippers, you’re entitled to that choice. i guess one man’s absolute garbage is another man’s treasure!

Marketplace 28 For Sale from $30.11

If this person was resourceful enough to sell a copy of this for $75 to a very very impatient person who had to secure a copy the exact minute it came out, I say more power to him.

the flipside is that the RSD disks are not returnable, so sellers need to drop the price on the ones left in the bins.
