and where do you go to fill the gaps?

Microhouse doesn't sing too good (except Vocalcity), so I go to doo-wop for that.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 2 December 2002 08:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Smooth chilled downtempo doesn't aggravate enough, ergo drone rock.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 2 December 2002 08:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

No wave isn't too good at melody, hence popular ballads of the pre-sound-recording era.

i'm sitting here, thinking out loud saying "what is dronerock not good at?" and contemplating "melody... so i go for my 60s bubblegum" when Suzy pipes up with "HYGIENE!!!!"

sigh. i can't win.

Shoegazer music sounds terrible on cheap speakers.
Goth has no sense of humor.
Celtic Music haven't done anything new or interesting with their cheap synths.

SST punk is not good at dressing well or looking attractive

Aaron W, Monday, 2 December 2002 16:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

hey! i used to love listening to shoegazer on cheap tinny car stereo speakers...

something else dronerock is not particularly good at, is stage presence/live charisma/entertaining live shoes. this is something that upsets me greatly. i mean, can't they DRESS UP a bit, and have dancers in cages and shit? oh wait, then i'd be seeing hawkwind. never mind.

dronerock bands that provide movies and projections for the audience to watch because they are aware of how boring they are to watch = CLASSIC!!!

Listen to it through headphones. It sounds much better. Trust me.

Goth has no sense of humor.

?!? Hie thee hence to Alien Sex Fiend. Besides which, most of the bands were unintentionally funny at the least. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Music doesn't leave a big enough trail of ruined lives, so I've gotten into pimping 10-yr-olds

dave q, Monday, 2 December 2002 17:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hie thee hence to Alien Sex Fiend.
Yeah, they're the Exception to the the Rule. But for every Alien Sex Fiend, there are 10 joyless bands with a latin name and bad poetry for lyrics. And even the other "funny" Goth bands are mostly funny by accident. I'm thinking specifically of The Swans here, but I'm sure there are others.
I love them all, but daaaammmmn are they dreary.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Swans are supposed to be over the top bleak! That's the point! Gira's a hilarious character...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Glam rock isn't very good at being sexy in a brawny, macho, early Burt Reynolds/Robert Conrad sort of way.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 2 December 2002 17:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

"can't they DRESS UP a bit"
No, it's all about the music. They want you to feel the music. Get rid of all those distractions (except lights, they enhance it.)

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dronerock performers are bad at being sociable after a performance.

Swans are goth? I don't think so. That's like saying the Birthday Party was goth -- another, I don't think so.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 2 December 2002 19:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

this is why i always went out with mod/garage boys. oh, that and the white boots.

yes, dronerock on headphones = best of all. speaking of which, where is my walkman, suzy?

They may never have called themselves goth, but you'd best believe the goths were listening in. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 December 2002 19:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Music" tends to have bad "lyrics", so I "read" a lot.

B.Rad (Brad), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 03:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

Electronic music doesn't get me any chicks.

Tom Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cock rock doesn't get you a degree, hence the modern composition.

Bah. He's as funny as a colonoscopy.
