The ILX 2002 Reader's Poll

By popular demand! This year ILX is doing a 'reader's poll' - with a small range of categories (2 music, 1 film) to see if it works.

Here's how to vote - you get your ballot to ilxpoll2002@hotmail.com (in the email text, no attachments please) by 31st December 2002. You can vote in as many of the categories as you want.

Here's the twist though - YOU HAVE TO IDENTIFY YOURSELF AS EITHER ILM OR ILE. To make things more interesting we'll be running two 'competing' polls as well as the overall one. Identify yourself based on preference, or where you're posting more, or a guess about other peoples tastes. The different results should make for some interesting cross-board debate.

The categories -

MUSIC: MULTI - this means any collection of tracks that was first made available during 2002 - including new albums, EPs, mini-albums, mix-CDs, and compilations including reissue compilations. Expanded versions of previously issued albums qualify too - simple just-the-original-tracks reissues don't officially but we'll throw them in.

Voting is very similar to the Village Voice poll (so as not to make extra work if you're posting in that) - you choose your favourite TEN items and have ONE HUNDRED points to split between them; nothing gets less than 5, nothing gets more than 30. If you don't indicate points it's assumed you're giving 10 each. If you pick less than 10 then you get to divide up less points - 5 picks means 50 points to divide, 6 picks means 60, and so on.

MUSIC: SINGLE TRACK - Your favourite 10 tracks which came out in 2002. Don't bother ranking, just list them. If you can't think of 10 put less.

FILM - Exactly as with the Multi Music category, pick your 10 favourite 2002 films and divide 100 points between them - nothing more than 30, nothing less than 5.

There you go! So remember -

Closing date - 31st December
INDICATE WHICH BOARD YOU'RE 'VOTING FROM'!!
Don't post your polls on the boards please until the results go up!

and results go up in January. Cheers!

Just tabulated the first votes - all very interesting.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 December 2002 23:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just a note that the North American release of I Get Wet was in fact 2002 so it is perfectly legitimate to give it 30 points on the albums list.

Can I just say PLEASE don't send attachments my firewall won't let me download them at work and the versions of Word and Excel I'm using at home to compile the scores are very old and go wrong with newer documents. Just text please! Cheers!

Are we going to allow Sunglasses At Night, Missy Queen's Gonna Die, Take Me With You, Rippin Kittin, At Night, Heaven and Silver Screen Shower Scene as 2002 releases?

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 5 December 2002 13:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tom said on ILE that nothing would be disqualified.

Jeff W, Thursday, 5 December 2002 13:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Siegbran, they were all (re)-released as singles in '02, so I'd say yes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 5 December 2002 13:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Shit, that makes narrowing it down to 10 even harder.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

In what sense were those released before Siegbran? I thought Take Me With You was just given to DJs last year or something. Silver Screen Shower Scene seems like a pretty big stretch, but I'll be including one of the remixes instead anyway

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm not sure about UK release dates, but when I was in Germany in october 2001, the Tok Tok, Golden Boy/Miss Kittin, Tiga/Zyntherius, DJ Sammy and Felix tracks already got major airplay on music television. I already put them in my 2001 list, for what it's worth... I'm not sure about Take Me With You, but I'm sure I heard that last year too. Another case: the Poney EP was officially released in 2001, but "conquered the world" in 2002.

Silver Screen Shower Scene seems like a pretty big stretch, but I'll be including one of the remixes instead anyway

Hmmm...what remix could that possibly be?

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

i asked on the ile thread of same whether 'single track' could be album tracks or stuff off comps but didn't get an answer. i spose it doesn't matter now as i've submitted my lists but i was just wonderin'.

(i limited it to actual single releases, btw)

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

The logic I follow is that in the MP3 era any individual track can be potentially heard as a single, so I'm not limiting it to specific single releases.

zebedee, Sunday, 8 December 2002 13:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Michael of course comp tracks count - else how can I vote for "The Present Lover"?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 8 December 2002 14:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

you're going to have to big up 'skidoos', 'making it whistle', 'flying far' and 'falling hands' for me, too!

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 9 December 2002 09:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Michael, you have excellent taste. Hell I could do a top 100 for the year with microhouse tracks alone. I'm even toying with the idea of doing a write-up for the top 30 or so.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 9 December 2002 13:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

stop toying - DO IT!

zebedee, Friday, 20 December 2002 16:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

About 30 last time I looked - I'm expecting more post Christmas (I've not voted yet cos I always get potential entries for Xmas, I'm sure others are the same). Also about 1/3 of focus group entires arrive at the deadline.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 December 2002 16:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm still thinking about mine *ponders*

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 December 2002 17:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

So can I still send in a Focus Group ballot? Now that everything's finally done for the semester I can really, uh, focus.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 20 December 2002 19:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

This is bugging me, because most of the films I'm sure would be in my list I HAVEN'T BLOODY SEEN YET, and most of the ones I want to put in the list were released in 2001. DOH. This is the curse of movies being so expensive and waiting to see them in the rep theatre: I won't see 24 Hour Party People, Fubar or Adaptation until next year.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 22 December 2002 01:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

(only today and tomorrow left to vote, foax)

zebedee, Monday, 30 December 2002 14:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually I'm extending the deadline to make up for the lost days over Xmas when the server was down - you have until Friday 3rd January people!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 30 December 2002 14:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wait -- for the focus groop or this one?

jm (jtm), Monday, 30 December 2002 16:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

And do you want us to give pithy responses like the VV poll or no?

deadline approaching!

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 3 January 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

This one - focus group is ovah!

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 4 January 2003 03:33 (twenty-one years ago) link
