Latent Poll: Pick your favorite long form Autechre album (2013-2020)

Message Bookmarked

Oversteps was the band's last "regular" album release, consisting of one CD or 2xLP. Move Of Ten is catalogued and seen as an EP (WAP) whereas both PLUS and SIGN are LPs (WARP). Since then they've released at minimum double albums (or twin albums) and even penta (elseq) and octal (NTS) albums. This also doubles as a post 2010 album poll, all of these came out in the last ten years. Pick your favorite!

Don’t sleep on the live set posted in the c/d thread, link expires in 3 days

The Sydney set? Yeah I grabbed that, and it's really good (hope to get an official board recording from them in a few years). Can they visit the west coast of the US already?

octobeard, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 22:15 (one year ago) link

Elseq, if I’m honest with myself

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 22:32 (one year ago) link

I love them all but it's SIGN/PLUS with no hesitation

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 22:36 (one year ago) link

I haven't listened to Exai enough to have an opinion of it. Love Elseq but it's a bit much. Love PLUS/SIGN but don't really think of them in the same category as the rest of these. Voting NTS.

Elseq is perhaps the one I'm least familiar with. It's definitely got some good bits

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 22:47 (one year ago) link

Right. Got 5 days to listen to all of these. Better get started.

elseq is way tighter than nts, imo

ivy., Tuesday, 29 August 2023 22:48 (one year ago) link

of course the point of nts is the long stretching mutation of it but

ivy., Tuesday, 29 August 2023 22:49 (one year ago) link

“All End” is fantastic chill out or fall asleep music, btw

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 23:41 (one year ago) link

Biggest issue I have with Elseq is that there was never a CD release

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 29 August 2023 23:42 (one year ago) link

this is NTS for me. I feel like the various live sets they released during this same period also deserve some consideration.

silverfish, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 03:10 (one year ago) link

I don't know that I ever actually listened to elseq, and if I did I don't remember anything about the experience. :/

Voted SIGN/PLUS, really enjoyed listening again recently
I had been meaning to for awhile but almost didn't want to ruin the memory of my first time hearing it (or revisit that pandemic mindset tbh). But the lush sound and relative simplicity is beguiling in a way that's unique for them.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 03:25 (one year ago) link

felt like I couldn't vote anything but NTS though I actually considered all of them

Exai is amazing but just pounds on your eardrums, I can't really listen to it all at once, though I think it does sort of work as a Vol 1/Vol 2 sorta thing

elseq has a ton of amazing tracks, some of the most evil/somehow tuneful music the band ever did, also appreciate that it's broken down into 5 digestable volumes

NTS as a whole...I mean its just so much good music. very difficult to digest though, 2 hours is quite a lot at once, never mind 4 volumes of that. I think a lot of tracks could've been edited down but that kind of goes against the point of it

SIGN/PLUS, I love 'em both and listened to them a ton over quarantine. SIGN I love because it's so symphonic and uniquely pretty. PLUS I think is everything else that's good about them, but just not so much. refreshing!

they're all winners

frogbs, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 03:35 (one year ago) link

Ummm anyone have a good Elseq starter/sampler playlist...I'm listening to all the Jazz Messenger records, I can't do 5 Autechres rn.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 03:44 (one year ago) link

Can I be honest and say that Exai and Elseq do not have strong separate identities for me

what you say is true but by no means (lukas), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 04:10 (one year ago) link

elseq sampler: pendulu hv moda, elyc6 onset, mesh cinereal, latentcall, oneum.

exai has never clicked as a whole work for me, I definitely get aural fatigue from it. elseq was where they finally returned my affections after I'd been carrying a torch for them for ten years, it and nts are peak ae, hard to choose between them. elseq is definitely snappier, more digestible and more consistent but nts is undeniable in its grandeur. sign is lovely, I played it loads last year, still haven't found the key to plus despite the love it gets here.

crutch of england (ledge), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 08:54 (one year ago) link

NTS, Elseq close behind, Exai farther behind, didn't care for Plus/Sign very much at all, seemed like backwards moves.

atonar, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 12:21 (one year ago) link

I will say that all of these make Oversteps and Quaristice look pretty ordinary

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 13:08 (one year ago) link

Thanks ledge. So far 'pendula hv moda' is their best reggae tune.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 13:27 (one year ago) link

They should release a 20 hour EP.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 14:08 (one year ago) link

On a long drive today so giving Elseq a good deep listen and it's very rewarding so far, or at least the first volume is doing it for me.

It's easy to overlook, by dint of being a "middle sibling" or K2 in this bunch. Plus the rather uninspiring artwork on these, which does little for me. I miss the days when Ae had amazing album covers.

But I love how fizzy this album is, and also how ravey it is in some places. There are some serious grooves on it

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 15:00 (one year ago) link

One of my favorite Autechre traits is when the groove emerges out from under the chaos.

Exai kind of clicked for me when I read the thing where autechre said they consider it like a set of 4 half hour EPs (or 5, also counting L-Event). Listening to one of the EPs at a time really works, a good length for this type of materiel.

Autechre: Elseq

Try the first and third playlists. If I had to pick one, the third.

octobeard, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 20:03 (one year ago) link

Link is to a comment I made in the Elseq thread where I created a custom collection of my favorite tracks into 3 digestible albums. But honestly you can skip the middle one unless you really really like Ae's longform tracks.

octobeard, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 20:04 (one year ago) link

Excellent, ty!

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 20:11 (one year ago) link

'c16 deep tread' has always been a highlight for me on Elseq. Those high, shrieking, wailing sounds towards the end are so spooky.
Might have already said this, but it reminds me of that penultimate scene in Ben Wheatley's 'Kill List' wehre they get chased through those tunnels by the demonic sect members.

same here on both counts

sorry but the obvious answer here is the glorious and grandiose NTS, their magnum opus and one of my favorite works of art of the last quarter century, and I say this despite being an "all end" skeptic

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 31 August 2023 11:43 (one year ago) link

that is all true but elseq is just a more fun front to back listen for me so I voted for that.

crutch of england (ledge), Thursday, 31 August 2023 18:49 (one year ago) link

Ok I'm really enjoying that Sydney bootleg that was posted above/elsewhere...that hypnotic hip-hop groove that keeps morphing sounds and intensity. I'm like 25 min in and wondering if they're going to keep it going for the whole set.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Thursday, 31 August 2023 18:56 (one year ago) link

I genuinely don't know what will win this one. If I had to bet, I'd say NTS but it seems they all have their fans

Stomp Jomperson (dog latin), Thursday, 31 August 2023 20:04 (one year ago) link

I'm on an Elseq/NTS listen and I think I might have to go with Elseq on this one

sean paul akerman (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 31 August 2023 21:43 (one year ago) link

Oooh, once they start playing with the tempo, yeah this Sydney bootleg rules.

50 Favorite Jordans (Jordan), Thursday, 31 August 2023 21:49 (one year ago) link

Whiney, are you a serial killer now too?

octobeard, Thursday, 31 August 2023 22:06 (one year ago) link

xp it was weird in the room, thinking “will they keep going with this? will they go deeper or space out?” Shallow as I am, I found the 2018 sets kinda thin gruel in places. There’s a part of me that thinks if you can go that hard in a live setting, why would you do anything else?
NTS was my vote but I’ve already said way too much about it.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 31 August 2023 22:57 (one year ago) link

Dare I say that while I enjoy NTS, the difference between this one and Elseq is that it lacks fun, thrills, spills. I've been working through Elseq and there are so many bonkers moments, like the extended jam-tastic meltdown at the end of elyc6 0nset. NTS by comparison is comprised of these huge monolithic slabs of slowly-evolving suffocating sounds. I've often said that iI'm always two releases behind in terms of grokking onto Autechre's output, and right now I'm really warming to Elseq.

maybe not the best thread, but: does anyone remember an Autechre 12-hour mix they did around March 2010? I think there was a thread where everybody was freaking out about it...

This one: "12-hour Radio Broadcast from Autechre.ws Tuesday 2nd March: 6PM - 6AM GMT. This will be epic." 2010

It was amazing - would love to hear it again.
