On the LP edition, tracks 1–3 are the "Red" section, tracks 4–7 are the "Green" section, tracks 8–9 are the "Blue" section, and tracks 10–12 are the "Black" section.

I wasn't going to continue these shoegaze polls as it didn't seem like there was much interest but Whirlpool actually did well votes wise. Plus, every once in awhile, I unearth something special that hasn't been done on ILM.

Not sure if Spiritualized are shoegaze but it works.

Bee OK, Thursday, 10 October 2024 02:15 (two months ago) link

shine a light

fpsa, Thursday, 10 October 2024 03:02 (two months ago) link

9-12 are all so good.

The correct answer is probably Shine A Light, but I sure do love 200 Bars.

Cow_Art, Thursday, 10 October 2024 03:19 (two months ago) link

way too tired to attempt descriptive revelry but this is a top 3 album for me.. “take your time” for me, I think but it’s hard to break this one apart. but I mean, the bass, the drone, the clapping and bluesy piano tinkles at the end that evoke colorful fireworks shooting out of a blank space

brimstead, Thursday, 10 October 2024 04:27 (two months ago) link

take your cool hand away

brimstead, Thursday, 10 October 2024 04:28 (two months ago) link

When it's time for my funeral, I let everyone know that "Shine A Light" is to be played.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 10 October 2024 04:55 (two months ago) link

initially I thought "If I Were With Her Now" but really, "Shine A Light" is an all-timer

Murgatroid, Thursday, 10 October 2024 05:17 (two months ago) link

I think I Want You and Run are my favorites on this one

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 10 October 2024 05:23 (two months ago) link

Anybody else own the CD with the glitch where Angel Sigh starts over after about 1:00? The song sounds weird now to me without it lol

brimstead, Thursday, 10 October 2024 05:55 (two months ago) link

My CD of this only had four tracks I’m pretty sure and I never learned to separate the tracks in my head so I have no idea what’s what for the most part

If I Were With Her Now, back in the day I loved the one-two of Step into the Breeze/Symphony Space... listened to this album so many times when it came out! This and the first Global Communication were my nap albums.

such a great album. Will have to think about this.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 10 October 2024 15:49 (two months ago) link

Yeah, this is difficult. Is Run fairly unusual in that it swipes lyrics from two different songs and combines them, like a double cover version? Or are there loads of other examples of that happening? I know it doesn't take all that much from the VU, but might just about count.

Position Position, Thursday, 10 October 2024 16:15 (two months ago) link

I forget that Feel So Sad isn't on this album. The long version of that song with the b-side might be my fave thing from this era.

haha yes!

go polish your nose ring (sleeve), Thursday, 10 October 2024 16:42 (two months ago) link

I could vote for any of the last four tracks

go polish your nose ring (sleeve), Thursday, 10 October 2024 16:43 (two months ago) link

Yeah, 13 minute version of Feel So Sad is amazing xps

groovypanda, Thursday, 10 October 2024 19:42 (two months ago) link

xpost: That was a glitch! Never realized, ha!

There are so many incredibly good songs here, and the fact shine a light is, for me, an easy answer, speaks to it being an overall best song out there.

ed.b, Thursday, 10 October 2024 19:52 (two months ago) link

sway.

one of the only songs that scratches that talk talk 'new grass' itch for me

lil $CHUB (Spottie), Thursday, 10 October 2024 23:32 (two months ago) link

basically a perfect album for me and mostly feels of a piece, but i'm leaning towards "Step Into the Breeze," glorious song.

JoeStork, Thursday, 10 October 2024 23:41 (two months ago) link

Probably Sway for me too but could almost have been any the tracks

Easily my favourite Spiritualized album

groovypanda, Friday, 11 October 2024 13:17 (two months ago) link

This version is from their live album called Fucked Up Inside which is a show from the Hollywood Palladium. A show I was actually at.

I was at that show too. Possibly my fave version of "Medication"

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 12 October 2024 02:45 (two months ago) link

FUI was a CD holy grail of mine for a long time. I would search GEMM looking for it.

The most recent vinyl reissue is really good.

Cow_Art, Saturday, 12 October 2024 02:55 (two months ago) link

I'm pretty confident that LGM is my favorite album period. Even though my fave Spz release might be the Medication EP with that crazy "Feel So Sad" that crash lands into the organ

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 12 October 2024 07:24 (two months ago) link

heh, I think GEMM was where I got mine

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 12 October 2024 12:02 (two months ago) link

If I Were With Her Now was so amazing live. If the album version was even half as good then I'd pick it. Can't fault anyone for choosing Shine a Light or I Want You or Take Your Time, but I'm going with 200 Bars. It could have been even better if it had been called 1000 Bars and been thirty minutes long.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 12 October 2024 19:06 (two months ago) link

Every few years I think I need to go back and make sense of why this and *Pure Phase* don't mean more to me when they're, sonically, one of those 'Platonic ideal' bands. I listened to this again today and remembered the same problems with Pierce's lyrics. I wish I'd discovered them when I was a proper stoner as dodgy-approaching-doggerel lyrics never got in the way of me liking, eg, Kyuss, another band who I'd gladly sonically die inside.

That is my Spiritualized story. I listen to Complete Works I & II fairly often, fwiw.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Sunday, 13 October 2024 18:12 (two months ago) link

Another veteran of that Palladium show here. Just wish there was video to go with the album! (Video of the whole night, honestly.)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I loooooove Pure Phase. Maybe because it sounds, I don't know, somewhat out of phase (sorry) with the albums that bookend it? The first one is such a (sorry) pure statement of purpose, the third a grandiose apotheosis, but Pure Phase, it's kind of like a premature imperial phase (sorry) album, just a band at the peak of its powers before it had actually peaked.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 14 October 2024 00:31 (two months ago) link

Pure Phase is my favorite. It’s like Loveless in the sense that I want to sink into the sound of it forever.

Another veteran of that Palladium show here

while we're humblebragging I was at the Fillmore show that makes up the rest of Fucked Up Inside

Lol

I'm voting "Sway" as SAL needs no help. This is probably my third favorite album by them.

Bee OK, Monday, 14 October 2024 20:58 (two months ago) link

sorry I meant the Warfield (I always get Bill Graham's shitty operations mixed up)

damn yeah I shoulda voted for that, I easily could have as per my post above

Tbh having heard the live versions the LGM version feels a little unfinished.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 15 October 2024 01:50 (two months ago) link

The Live At The Royal Albert Hall bit with Oh Happy Day - Shine A Light - Electric Mainline is soooooo good.

They were my favorite band for a while.

Cow_Art, Tuesday, 15 October 2024 02:50 (two months ago) link

I thought someone would have voted for it xps
