hell has come now, hell has come
my baby was shot
my house was bombed
i've got no food
i've got no water

i love that song.

those dead c cd reissues (harsh 70s, trapdoor) were some of the first i mail ordered. then wildly enough i found 'white house' at a used cd store one time.

with scg i only ever fucked with 'torch of the mystics'. i'll be honest they don't really appeal like they used to for some reason.

he/him hoo-hah (map), Saturday, 12 October 2024 20:18 (two months ago) link

I have torch of the mystics as well. I know what you mean.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 12 October 2024 20:21 (two months ago) link

xp pretty similar to me tbh. i do think SCG move over some very dubious terrain at times, and the discomfort i feel is a barrier that stops me listening to them very much, but i just listened to Space Prophet Dogon again as a refresher and that was still as transcendent as ever

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Saturday, 12 October 2024 20:27 (two months ago) link

Now this is more like it!!

That was the river but this is the fucking C

Ward Fowler, Saturday, 12 October 2024 21:16 (two months ago) link

ohh yeah "space prophet dogon" is perfect

he/him hoo-hah (map), Saturday, 12 October 2024 22:02 (two months ago) link

Man, I thought these threads had kind of lost the plot but this is a killer matchup…I do think the pairing is more or less fair but I do wish it had been the first SCG rather than Torch. Will have to think about this one more.

both of these bands were kinda hard to track down in the 90s and even the 00s if you weren't in the know.

someone else who knows them better can speak to scg and the vocal style. my feeling is sure it's orientalist especially in hindsight but before everyone was reissuing actual lounge music from 70s burma or whatever .. idk at the time it was really invigorating. they were probably more of a gateway into a certain kind of thing for me than dead c were, but those dead c albums were just crushingly beautiful at a time in my life when that's exactly what i was looking for. the bewildering ruins of music.

These 3 on 3 tournaments are fun but maybe outta hand. Obviously Dead C but also obviously Sun City Girls.

It was fall ‘96 when I bought all the above Dead C LPs for (no shit) $6 each from Ajax, or maybe Road Cone. One of those amazing distros that will never exist again. I also grew up in Seattle so the SCG stuff was available locally. What a time to be alive.

This is impossible, even if I went for Dead C. 'Grotto Of Miracles' is from 1986?!

SCG by a hair, never clicked with Eusa Kills the same way as I did with the other 5 of these

Late 90s / early 2000s I was thee biggest SCG fan, and I do still listen to Torch Of The Mystics from time to time and it still absolutely rules, so I'm going to vote for them. But, I'll take this poll as yest another reminder that I need to devote more time to listening to The Dead C.

stirmonster, Friday, 18 October 2024 08:28 (two months ago) link

I am actually doing the opposite and going on a Sun City Girls binge rn, whereas I've listened to a lot of Dead C in the past.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 18 October 2024 08:37 (two months ago) link

I went through a huge SCG phase a few years back, so they'll get my vote. I hope they get around to re-issuing the 80s trio (s/t, Grotto and HCP) one of these days.

Duane Barry, Friday, 18 October 2024 19:16 (two months ago) link

Dead C but in fairness I never fully got into SCG

three weeks pass...

Eusa Kills is real good. Don't think I ever heard it before lol

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 12 November 2024 13:31 (one month ago) link

The T. Rex cover on that was my entry point to getting into them I think. Someone made me a mixtape in about 98/99 with one of their songs on it but it didn't make a big impression other than noting they were noisy and I might want to listen to more of their stuff, then I heard Children and I was like oh ok

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 00:01 (one month ago) link

dead c (recent albums, like armed courage, patience, unknowns, and rare ravers) has been such a good relief / contrast from other, more tidy (?) listening material lately. may be just that i haven't played them for a while. still need to explore these earlier albums

the bewildering ruins of music.

nice description. they (dead c) do this so well, even on later albums they seem to maintain a successful approach, with their idiosyncrasies intact. there's been a number of brief (like, two track releases) & recent-ish bandcamp things they've done. i could be conflating their '20s output with the abundance of michael morley's output on bandcamp.. wait. here it is: https://languagerecordings.bandcamp.com/album/all-goodbyes-3

Lowell N. Behold'n, Wednesday, 13 November 2024 04:49 (one month ago) link

Just saw this, didn't vote.

Torch Of The Mystics is the best record on here and "Space Prophet Dogon" may be one of my top 20 tracks of all-time, but I can't be mad about these results.
