Tatu - How Soon Is Now : One of the very best Smiths covers ever?

I like it very much. And the rest of the album is good too; especially the single "All The Things She Said". What do you think of this new russian group and what are the best Smiths covers in your opinion?

Is the single ("All the Things She Said") a Simple Minds cover?

I'm generally of the mindset that the Smiths should never be covered, especially this particular track. Love Spit Love severely fucked it up, as did the deplorably embarassing Snake River Conspiracy (and I'll never forgive Soho for appropriating the riff for "Hippy Chick.") The only credible covers of Smiths tunes I've ever heard, ironically enough given Tatu's nationality, were by the Ukrainians, Pete Solowka's post-Wedding Present band. Seek out their cover e.p.!

Anthrax's cover of "London" weren't too bad, though, if only for the novelty.

1. T.A.T.U. - All the things she said

2. i can't think of any good smiths covers

It's definitely not a cover of the Simple Minds song. I think "How Soon Is Now" is the only cover song in their "200 km/h in the wrong lane" LP.

is the version of the single on 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane the "good" version or the "rock" version? (cf. the other thread linked above)

My band once covered "The Queen Is Dead". It was risible. I can't think of a good Smiths cover either.

Stars' version of This Charming Man is one of the only decent ones I've heard.

Someone asked Marr about the Tatu song at CMJ. The exchange was something like...

Punter: Have you heard the version of How Soon Is Now by Tatu?

Marr: No I haven't.

Punter: It's these Russian girls and was produced by Trevor Horn.

Marr: Is it any good?

Punter: (hesitation) Yeah... it is.

Marr: That doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement.

In my opinion, Tatu's version isn't nearly as bad as the one that Love Spit Love did a while ago. There's my ringing endorsement.

Quicksand's cover of "How Soon Is Now?" is probably my all-time favorite Smiths cover, followed by Treepeople covering "Bigmouth Strikes Again", and then just today I heard Low's cover of "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" which was pretty cool. The only Smiths covers I haven't liked are those by Love Spit Love and Everclear, who both covered "How Soon Is Now?" and generally embarrassed themselves doing so.

Oh good call, I'd forgotten about that "Light 3000" track. I want to change mine.

Kirsty MacColl's "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet" is a good one. Supergrass' "Some Girls Are Bigger" isn't bad. The Low that was mentioned is my favorite.

six years pass...

Just heard Bow Wow Wow's astonishing cover of I Started Something I Couldn't Finish. And Tiffany's Panic on the same record, blimey.

I really love the Billy Bragg and Sandie Shaw versions of "Jeane," but I think my favorite Smiths cover ever has turned out to be a rocksteady version of "Paint a Vulgar Picture" I have somewhere.

Its "Money changes everything" with words.
