Rod Stewart = Da one

Rod Stewart is perhaps the most influencial artist of the 21st century. His monumental question, "Do you think I'm sexy?" paved the way for generations to come. Men, women, boys, girls, kittens, straights and gays alike... who didn't get wet the first time they saw that pivotal music video?

Discuss.

"who didn't get wet the first time they saw that pivotal music video"???
Jorge Ben didn't, I bet

I have to admit that 'do ya think I'm sexy' has one of the best melodic riffs of all time, such that I'm drawn to play it every time I lay hands on a keyboard. But Rod Stewart is a voice for other's lyrics, and a frontman for other's songs. Thus, ixnay on your ropositionpay.

Tom M: the poster known cryptically as t\'\'t refers to said "melodic riff": the vocal line of the "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" chorus was rather famously stolen from Jorge Ben's Brazilian hit "Taj Mahal." This was legally indefensible, and an out-of-court settlement was reached. Unless you're talking about the rising synth hook. I don't know where that was stolen from. Probably somewhere else. Jorge Ben roolXor.

I have always thought of Rod Stewart as "the one who got away," an artist of spirit and integrity who then sold out in a big way. But now I think he was always shit. Shit shit shit.

No, the first five years or so of the '70s were very classic indeed, solo and with the Faces. I thought Do Ya Think I'm Sexy was the moment we knew there was nothing more any good coming, the Jump The Shark moment (Sailing seemed to me not to deny any chance of recovery).

I think he'll never lose the ability to rock a single, but his album skills have undoubtedly waned.

Why is Rod Stewart pivotal, and not, say Elvis? Or Frank Sinatra? Who thinks Rod is the first guy to come on to us on TV? Also, I think Mick Jagger had already done the lampoon-for-real type of thing Stewart's doin' in that video. I think that bass player Phil Chen is a bit more fascinating. He looks like he's 12.

Matt C: though rather deeply in agreement with most of yr manly manure-spreading on Rod, I dare suggest there should be left a few untouched spots way, way back afield
in particular his cover of "reason to believe"
an almost unbearably beutiful song

Yeah, that's my absolute favourite of his too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 December 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" is such an enthusiastic leap into trash that I love it despite many misgivings. And how about that album cover! You've gotta think he knew people would think he'd lost it with that.

Didn't Carmine Appice actually write (or at least co-write) this tune? Ha.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 7 December 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

He may have written appice of it.

sorry
