Spotify has his name wrong. It’s Hass Salan. Not much is known about him but he wrote, arranged and played violin on a lot of Sinn Sisamouth’s big Cambodian hits. He disappeared with the rest of the scene when pol pot took over.

It’s been 50 years since that whole golden era of Cambodian music was wiped out. I went to the killing fields today and the S-21 prison where people were murdered. I found a tooth on the ground at the killing fields. Things keep appearing as the soil erodes. You can still see the bloodstains on the floors and ceilings of the former classrooms that became cells at S-21. It was tough.

Peace to all these wonderful musicians who went out in so much pain.

needless to say, there have been quite a few since.

Divine Madness is probably my favourite, a simple collection of the original run of top 30 singles, but annoyingly it uses the album re-recording of The Prince instead of the 7" (among a few others iirc). I can forgive and even celebrate that when it's the Smiths because (challop?) their album versions are always better, but it's a bit distracting with Madness as the 2 Tone "Prince" is so much more familiar.

What am I listening to in 2026? The Rhythm Sisters! Road to Roundhay Pier is incredible, probably the quickest I've ever bought a second-hand record after listening to it online.

Der Meridian - Magdeburg (Lange Nacht), exquisite minimal wave synthpop with a tidily-executed Cold War aesthetic.

There are 80s pop songs that do the Motown/northern soul backbeat thing without being a retro soul pastiche, but this really up the antes. The accordion, as ever, hovering through the thing adds such a great element to their general acoustic skiffle-y sound.

A few of the songs feel like they use traditional folk modes - I can't say that for sure, just sounds a bit like it - but this one simultaneously highlights that while near-undercutting it with a lot of detuned Wild Honey Pie dissonance. It's a beautiful sound.

Complete Madness does, as does The Business (the one I grew up with). A quick consultation of Wiki suggests Ultimate Madness does too but I dunno about after that. Seems like there's not a lot of logic behind which version to use and when.

absolutely (ahem !) hate it cos of the f^cking interviews that are spread throughout.
i also have the double header comps : 'It's Madness/It's Madness Too', that came out when they returned with 'Wonderful'.
The original versions of the comps had coverart/typo that fit alongside the artwork of Wonderful, hence why I got them, also, they both have loads of b-sides and no f&cking interviews.
i think that had the orig version of 'The Prince'.

reading my way through Denim & leather on NWOBHM and checking out some of the bands mentioned. I know the bands names but not their music.
So have discovered I like early Girlschool, which fits in with the Runaways box set I picked up recently.
Also that the Paul Di'anno era Iron Maiden did include some influence from much earlier in the 70s on tracks like Remember Tomorrow which might prompt me to pick up the first couple of lps at some point.
Now in the section on Satanic metal so checking out Witchfinder General and relistening to Venom,

Otherwise picked up the s/t cd by The Raincoats.
really great, idiosyncratic take on the influences of punk which went on to be very influential. Stands as its own thing pretty well too.

Bothy Band Out Of The Wind Into The Sun#3rd lp by Irish traditional revival band. I think showing the Gadamer idea that a band's encounter with tradition is a conversation between the elements of the tradition and the players' own contribution.
Anyway this makes things sound pretty fresh and I could see this appealing heavily to people with little familiarity with Irish traditional music as well as connoisseurs. Like it has its own presence and is pretty sublime.
Think I need the preceding 2 lps too.

Strut label compilation of 70s music from SA like an equivalent to Ethiopiques in its demonstration of crosscultural influence. Tracks are mainly pretty short at roughly 3 minutes, I guess single length. I think Ethiopiques tracks cane be comfortably longer.
Anyway pretty great, funky as f*** and showing some influence from the white rock bands from the late 60s.

yeah, pretty great stuff .I'd just think they should have a wide appeal without sounding commercial or something. Musicianship is immediate and not overly showy so thinking this is just really really good music without it having diddley-oi trappings per se. Doesn't need to conspicuously appeal to tourists etc. Is just imbued with an inner glow. So 'i still need to grab the rest of their stuff, Bothy band and Planxty etc

great compi of cajun music from the 1950s by a partially sighted accordionist.
Copy I found in a charity shop yesterday had visible scratches. I tried to play it earlier and it played half the disc ok then started audibly skipping.
Linernotes say it was sourced from disc to some extent which other reviews are saying is bad sound.
I was put in mind of a track by Non I know from 40 years ago could be Rise or Romance Fatal Dentro De Un Auto which I heard with a bit of a cajun lilt art the time I was listening to it. Seems to tie into the sawing sound of the accordion here. But I really like it. Which might mean I grab a better quality copy which I probably wouldn't have thought of if I hadn't spent a Euro on this copy.

Various – Moroccan Street Music
seems to be field recordings of several Moroccan street musicians though could be cheap studio.
I could do with a lot more of this stuff. I love North African and Eastern Mediterranean etc musics so should definitely have more. This was pretty pristine.

Not bad compilation overview of the work of Philadelphia Maverick musician.
I think I could definitely use a remaster of A Wizard/A True Star which I think Edsel attempted a few years ago.
But this is pretty listenable and will tide me over until I can get better individual cds. possibly.

Late 80s South African big band jazz based in Marabi the blend of indigenous musics and American jazz from the late 50s and 60s.
Can get a bit MOR or New Agey in places which might have to do with the time of recording. But mainly pretty groove-y jazz.
I started picking up some stuff in this area after reading Joe Boyd's 2nd book And the Roots of Rhythm Remain which has a section on the subject. I also read a book on the King Kong stageshow from the late 50s last year King Kong - Our Knot of Time and Music: A personal memoir of South Africa’s legendary musical by Pat Williams which also ties into the music.
Pretty great for the most part.

A Slight Disturbance in My Mind: The British Proto-Psychedelic Sounds of 1966
Absolutely fantastic Grapefruit label set of 1966 recordings from the early days of psych, a lot of which would be thought of as freakbeat. Mod and Beat bands developing and getting a bit more explorimental. So it's got The Creation, Yardbirds, Smoke, Fleurs De Lys and a load of other, lesser known bands including some with members who became better known later e,g the N'Betweens who later became Slade.
Nicely curated, so it plays in a pretty great way that you can return to multiple times.
There's about 4 hours of material here so should keep me going for quite a while.

Oh! You Pretty Things: Glam Queens and Street Urchins 1970-76
Another great compilation on the Grapefruit label, so compiled by the same person David Wells. It is based in the idea of glam but otherwise seems to be pretty much a companion volume to A Slight Disturbance, just like 6 or 7 years later.
This has a number of the usual suspects on including some faces better know for their punk era material a couple of years later. Again hangs together very well.
Wells also compiled the I'm A Freak Baby series and We're An American Band so would love to see him do a German 3cd set along the same lines.

Girlschool The Bronze Years
First 4 albums in one place.
Partially the result of reading Denim & Leather the NWOBHM oral history plus I just finally got a similar box on the Runaways.
I think this is supposed to be 3 pretty good records plus one less good, more commercial, one.
First 2 are definitely good. The band play an amped up r'n'r like a female Motorhead.
I've just been discovering I quite enjoy a number of NWOBHM bands music so not sure if I am still put off by straight heavy metal, preferring the earlier hard rock stuff with more psychedelic touches. Or if my tolerance for it has expanded.
Anyway, really enjoy the first 2 here. Haven't played beyond that yet though,

Iron Maiden Killers
2nd lp by band who went on to be one of the better know Heavy Metal bands. This still features the 1st well known singer Paul Di'Anno and has some influence from punk.
I enjoyed this and it had me starting to wonder what my parameters for liking HM were. This might still be the good stuff I dunno, quite enjoy it though.
It does show influence from other early 70s heavy rock. & I find it quite listenable. Guitars are quite good. Vocals nice and rough.

singer's "mindreading". i remember dismissing the second singer album when i learned it didn't have todd rittmann on it and i think at the time (2011) you could only sample one mp3 online and it sounded synth-pop -i thought "no". however, it turns out that despite lacking rittmann's singular growl & twang, it's v similar to the first singer album: weird minimalist space-gospel psychedelic pop with a bit more bloop blorp and some negative space. really good.

united waters' "coma to coma" from 2019. brian from mouthus does his leonard cohen as a sleepy bison trapped in a lava lamp thing - a voice like no other - the band is lo-fi rusty strings & chorus pedals, electro drums. songs bubble up like springsteen or lloyd cole from the bottom of the cough syrup dumpster. so more of the same, now, 4th, album, i think. sloppier than usual this time round tho, distractingly so. nevertheless, sullivan's humid burr is the main attraction here and suits the weather
