another former black midi member releases a solo album that blows everything black midi did out of the water. this one's all-acoustic prog-folknon-album single "numerology" is song of the year

the epic "actress" is the album's centrepiece

this composite live version of unreleased track "kick me" is fantastic

i guess i should include debut single "lecture 25" too
― ufo, Thursday, 9 April 2026 18:24 (one month ago)
exciting, i had no idea it was coming out this week. haven't spent much time with any of the singles but "numberology," but i love that one.
are they gonna have to take out words from the band name with each album? my band believe. band believe. believe.

iirc he said part of the idea is the lineup is going to be constantly evolving hence the band will be 'new' each time

I love this album. It’s almost exactly the sound of the idealised Gabriel-era genesis album that hitherto only existed in my head.

well I guess I oughta pick it up if that's the case
― frogbs, Friday, 10 April 2026 21:17 (one month ago)
it's good yes
― imago, Friday, 10 April 2026 21:29 (one month ago)
it reminds me a lot of o'rourke's singer-songwriter albums
― ufo, Friday, 10 April 2026 21:39 (one month ago)
yeah heavy o’rourke vibes on the first two songs. also thought of streethawk-era destroyer and mysterious production of eggs-era andrew bird

some of it is like if bejar had gotten really into trying to make folk music and the craft of being a 'singer-songwriter', instead of always being ambivalent at best about those, if that makes any sense

this is really cool. I never heard black midi (or Geordie Greep), but I am into this. I was variously reminded of Colin Blunstone and Olivia Tremor Control (maybe even specifically The Circulatory System? it's been a while), also a similar vibe to Yves Jarvis, who has also reminded me of OTC.

you should also listen to greep! his solo album is kinda like this album except as played by brazilian steely dan
― ufo, Friday, 17 April 2026 21:34 (one month ago)
damn that sounds wild lol I will
― obvious old hat (rob), Friday, 17 April 2026 21:36 (one month ago)
what yves jarvis reminds you of the olivia tremor control btw, i've never really made a connection there
― ufo, Friday, 17 April 2026 21:39 (one month ago)
iirc it was just The Zug
― obvious old hat (rob), Friday, 17 April 2026 21:41 (one month ago)
oh i don't think i've heard that one, will have to check it out
― ufo, Friday, 17 April 2026 21:43 (one month ago)
it's good! maybe the most psychedelic one? the effect is a little different from OTC as he's a one-man operation, but I just put it on to confirm I wasn't totally misremembering and I stand by it

this album is so great, but I guess it's an acquired taste or something because I have failed thrice to convince a friend to go see them live on Wed :(

the way this can go from bedroom intimate to widescreen technicolour in the space of minutes if not seconds
