Music as response to music criticism...c/d?

I was reading on old Jim O'Rourke interview circa-"Eureka" where he talks about recording music in order to confuse an audience who already expect to be confused. He mentions how the opening of the album was intended to fool people into thinking it was "Bad Timing 2". In retrospect, this is the first time that I have listed to "Insignificance" as a response to criticism of "Eureka" and "Halfway To A Threeway" (apparently US reviews didn't "get" either).
I can't really say this brings anything new to the experience, but are intentions like these justified? Does anyone really care about this stuff?

D'ya think that maybe Jim was joking?

No, he's not.

I don't recall Jim O'Rourke EVER joking.

Intentions shmintentions. What it sounds like coming out of the speakers, that's all there is.

I don't recall Jim O'Rourke EVER joking.

You have clearly never seen him live, then.

I saw him on the Eureka tour with Nobukazu Takemura and he played acoustic the entire time (ivor cutler, thunderclap newman, etc.), only turning on his laptop to live-sample/edit the guitar parts to make "eureka" and then played it for about 15 minutes until it got so loud and bombastic it sent people hurrying to the exits.

But did he tell jokes in-between songs? Was he joking, ever?

The terrascope link above includes the line "Jim O'Rourke told the funniest version of the clown joke I have ever heard".

Can somebody tell me the joke?

no jokes, just really nervous, very anal about being in tune, had a maraca taped to his foot which he used for percussion.
