Horace Mann, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds like lukewarm vodka tastes.

jot eff pe, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit, I think I've used all of these awful words & phrases. I'd nominate "streamlined," but I think I've used that one too. How about "chart rap"?

Matt C., Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"overwrought"

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

felt like writing "oeuvre"
(whoops, i did)
and then remembered that i don't actually hate it - it just makes me giggle a lot whenever i see it

t\'\'t (t''t), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"underground"

As if to imply that music is 'revolutionary' simply because nobody has heard of it. Harriet Tubman moving slaves across state lines to freedom was 'underground'. The French Revolution was 'underground'. No matter how few people know about a band, they're not 'underground', they're just a band nobody knows about.

When bands start involving themselves in covert enviroterrorist activities against an oppressive oil/war/industry regime while running from the law as fugitives, living in the wilderness, THEN you can call them 'underground'.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

That would actually make a fantastic musical comedy for Godspeed You Black Emperor.

Ryan Pitchfork, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

'rock' and 'opera' -- while i've nothing in particular against either of them when they're kept separately, if joined together...

t\'\'t (t''t), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"sonic" is always so cringy

bob zemko (bob), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

'gig' and 'live music'

(but 'concert' or 'show' is fine)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"genre"

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

as long as we're going down that road ... "youknowwhatI'msayin'"

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

For real though, Fritz...that's what I'm talking about!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Ferg, couldn't disagree more with you on that
"oxymoron" is a wondrous-sounding word and a devine stylistic device

t\'\'t (t''t), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm possibly associating it too much with the old 'A (positive adjective)(thing you don't like)? Snort. Surely that's an oxymoron' too much. But oh, it just seems a bit silly and unwieldy anyway.

Ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"Continuity" and "Cohesion".

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

All critical shorthand, even (especially) when I use it myself.

"Rocking" as an adjective.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

"Kafkaesque," "tasteful," and "'nuff said". (two words, I know, but it's horrible!)

t\'\'t (t''t), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 09:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I second (or third) "gig".

Yuk.

I use it all the time, but what's the alternative?

meirion john lewis (mei), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

what's the alternative?
Engagement. That's much better.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Friday, 25 March 2011 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

Most of those mentions are this sentence:

In 2004, Light in the Attic released a compilation called Wheedle's Groove

eight years pass...

I hate the amount that people use the word sociopath these days. It pissed me off that there's both sociopaths and psychopaths. I'm irrationally indifferent to the distinctions between them. In a situation where I might need to employ one of them, I'm going to go with psychopath because it sounds cooler. Sociopath sounds so nerdy.

"Renowned" drives me nuts.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 2 May 2019 12:29 (seven years ago)

one year passes...

when people refer to their house as their 'property'

'we just bought our first property'

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 10:46 (five years ago)

Back on music... "platter" (for LP) always made me shudder.
Didn't like "disc" much either.

Maltrsnapper, Wednesday, 1 July 2020 11:11 (five years ago)

That's entirely rational. xp

peace, man, Wednesday, 1 July 2020 11:12 (five years ago)

'Property' really makes people sound like smug venture capitalist twats, I agree

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 11:41 (five years ago)

Platter is terrible.

Future England Captain (Tom D.), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 12:15 (five years ago)

Kitchenette.

pomenitul, Thursday, 2 July 2020 21:23 (five years ago)

"eggplant" tho, what is that about? (well, I looked it up so I know what it's about, but it's a stupid name that's a total mismatch with this magnificent vegetable, unlike "aubergine", which is chef's kiss)

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Thursday, 2 July 2020 21:25 (five years ago)

I hope that 'aubergine' is indeed ultimately derived from the Sanskrit 'vātigagama', which apparently means 'the plant that cures the wind'.

pomenitul, Thursday, 2 July 2020 21:34 (five years ago)

Irrational... maybe not. But there are a few words and phrases in IG record collector circles that get me down: "gifted" (to be given something), "out in the wild" (to chance upon something in the real world) and, yeah, "platter." Mostly I hate them because I find myself gravitating towards them in the written word.

cooldix, Friday, 3 July 2020 17:45 (five years ago)

I just heard a woman saying she was "spiritual" and was annoyed with her, then the word, then myself because I knew what she meant and can't think of a better way to express it.

Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 3 July 2020 18:12 (five years ago)

“prescient”
Just so awkward

calstars, Friday, 3 July 2020 18:36 (five years ago)
