You mean like "Use Your Illusion" I and II?

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

use yr illusion one and two, yeah.
springsteen's tunnel of love and, er, the other one
tom waits' alice and, er, the other one

who's got the time for these antics?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 01:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Worked for Tom Waits.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 01:35 (twenty-three years ago)

It worked hella good for Tom Waits! Blood Money is his best record like, since, Rain Dogs!

The Springsteen records were Human Touch and Lucky Town IIRC

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

pretty stupid. why not release them 2 years apart! that way you can afford to take four years off between albums without anyone so much as batting an eyelid.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

miles davis RECORDED 2 albums in 1 day! double albums! of actual good stuff too. that's pretty super classic.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 01:53 (twenty-three years ago)

So, is this an even more vain move than releasing a double album? It's presented as though the artist is deflating all the pomp of a double album, but expecting people to tell the two apart seems presumptuous enough. They're usually accompanied by some piddling explanation of why they simply had to be split apart, even though more disparate albums are released every day with no ill effect.

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

and a double album is generally cheaper than 2 seperate albums, isn't it?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 02:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought the Waits albums might have contained a single good album between them (mainly from Blood Money), even though i realize they represented separate "projects".

I never heard the two albums Julianna Hatfield released a couple of years ago. Wan't her career already in the dumps, more or less, when she pulled that?

Donovan's Gift From a Flower to a Garden was pretty good, and even though it was a double album in Britain that was split in two for America, the two discs had distinct personalities: flower pop and children's songs.

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

(Everybody knows the difference between flower pop and children's songs, right?)

Curt (cgould), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Tom Waits, but neither of the albums made my best of lists this year. Its hard to speculate whether narrowing down the selections so it would have all fit onto one album is probably ill-advised, as they were separate stage projects anyhow, and as such probably not even meant as proper albums anyhow.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 03:05 (twenty-three years ago)

what do you mean by 'proper'?

I seem to remember about 4 of davis' 'in'' albums being recorded at once and released over time, which is about like the agharta/pangaea pair, but I don't remember the details and don't care to look them up right now.

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

flooding the market = dud

i mean, really, what's the rush? unless one (or both) of them is an 'uncharacteristic' release or lacks mass appeal, may as well give each a sustained individual promotion.

Use Your Illusion is at least a rare example of both albums getting a good solid push and plenty of singles released from each (perhaps too many towards the end there). I wish I could remember the order in which the vids/singles off of UYI were released. i wonder if whichever single was current at the time had much of an impact on which sold better from week to week.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 04:30 (twenty-three years ago)

The Tom Waits albums were a good idea-if only for those great photos inside Blood Money-Oh Tom, you're incorrigible!

Aren't Grandaddy and Songs:Ohia both pulling this trick this year? Or did one of the Songs... albums get pulled back?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Thumbs up for the Waits records. He just doesn't make a bad record. Not long after those records were released, Frank Black did the same thing. I'm starting to like Black's solo stuff more than the Pixies now that I'm becoming old and lame.

Matt Kendall (mattkendall), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Frank Black did it in August.

paul cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Appleseed Cast

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

that's just two random words isn't it?

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Appleseed Cast is real.

They're like shoegaze/emo

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i think i liked them better when they were imaginary.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Hell, release FOUR albums in one day, if they're good, what's it matter?

My opinion on this matter is as such: since the day the Flaming Lips released Zaireeka, ANYTHING GOES.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud. Why flood the marketplace?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Separating a double album so you redneck fans can afford to buy it on the installment plan: Classic.

Selling individual MP3s on the internet: Dud.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

(meant that to be "Your redneck fans" not "YOU redneck fans"
