When was the last time you were knocked out by something new to you playing in a store enough to buy it, no questions asked? And did it turn out to be classic or dud?

The CBGB's and the Birth of US Punk compilation album. A lot of the songs on it are available in other places, but these recordings in particular add some punch to the material.

I buy stuff all the time that looks interesting in the store, but hardly ever because it's playing over the store's speakers. I'm a big fan of "Caveat Emptor" (see Devo vs. XTC thread).

thats how i got into grandmaster flash and the furious five at the age of 11. they were playing it on the speakers and some shitty used record store and i bought it blind. ahhh memories.

most of the record stores i go to let you listen to anything on turntables before you buy it, i would say that most small stores (esp, dance/hip hop) let you do that, at least thats my experence.

Interpol. I heard "Obstacle 1" and found the concept of Ian McCullough bleating about a girl's literacy over a Pixies beat too beautiful. The rest of the album isn't always as fun but I still enjoy the oh-so-college-rock of it all.

I just did this and it didn't work out for me. I bought the Billion Dollar Babies album "Battle Axe" after playing some things for a few seconds in the store. I thought it would be both really good and unlike many of the records I already own. I changed my mind when I got home and listened through it *sigh*. It's still unlike many of the records I own, though, because I want to keep most of the other ones.

yo, it's not blind if it's playing in the record store, right?
anyway, my last blind purchas was a pile of brazilian hip hop CDs from a store in sao paulo... the guy at the store actually offered to let me listen but that didn't seem as fun. by far the gem of the lot wasn't even hip hop but a comp of brazilian "funk" (nois da fita 2, and i can't figure out the artists - dj marcos e dj duda?), which is essentially a mixed CD of miami bass-styled beats, clumsy raps, trance keyboard lines, and a mashup approach to sampling (except that i can't really identify many of the samples used). absolutely brilliant.

Sure it is, when you don't know who the hell it is that's playing, what's been written about them, who they're friends with, how they comb their hair, etc. Though it also apparently means "seduced by what I saw before hearing any of it", which technically should be termed "buying deaf".

Curt, the last album I bought blind was also at neptune, haha. It is my fave record store by far. The album was "The Damage" by Ludus. Some songs are better than others, but it is pretty good. I love "my cherry is in sherry".
