Who would have thought that The Simpsons was conceived to the strains of "Cory & The Mandara Suicide Pyramid Action or Gas Satori" and "Mistakes + Regrets"?

Im seriously considering going to the ATP in New York hosted by Malkmus.

Im wondering, how is ATP setup and how does it work? Anybody ever been to one of these? Is it worth it?

Also, South By Southwest... are those any fun?

I thought The Magic Band had already decided NOT to reunite... but according to beefheart.com:

The reformed Magic Band are set to play three live dates - one in the United States (Los Angeles, June 2003) and two in the UK (London and East Sussex, April 2003) and are planning to release an album of the reformed Magic Band playing Beefheart classics in spring / summer 2003.

The new line-up for all the gigs is as follows:

John French - drums
Gary Lucas - guitar
Denny Walley - guitar
Mark Boston - bass

Don Van Vliet / Captain Beefheart will not be appearing.

The Los Angeles and East Sussex dates will be part of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, curated by Matt Groening in LA and Autechre in East Sussex.

Is this the least diverse ATP yet?

All Tomorrow's Blech (amateurist), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

they say that every time.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

But it wasn't true last year.

All Tomorrow's Blech (amateurist), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

may i add that is not a comprehensive list, merely the acts who are committed 6 months in advance.

boredoms, blonde redhead, ooioo, neko case--i love it.

he should really get joan jett, and he should ask sonic youth back.

I have read that the performances will be split between more wide-ranging venues than last time. Some at UCLA and some downtown, and perhaps other locations. This will make trying to catch different bands harder.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 19 December 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't it all on a single site? that's the best bit about the UK ATPs - staying in the holiday camp by the sea...

michael (michael), Thursday, 19 December 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not this year in LA, and UCLA to downtown is probably 10 miles of crowded (depending on time of day) highway/streets. And I don't know how parking will be arranged if one wants to go back and forth on a single day. Maybe there'll be a shuttle, but it still seems kind of pointless to split it up like that.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 19 December 2002 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i have heard that the venues have yet to be determined but should be announced in about 3 weeks.

gygax!, Thursday, 19 December 2002 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

HOLY SHIT

See you there! I'll be saving up for a few months I guess. Hopefully can sleep on couch of grad student buddy at Cal Tech.
Or I'll just have to hold off on buying that Access Virus C until later.

HOLY FUCKOS

Tom Millar (Millar), Thursday, 19 December 2002 23:23 (twenty-three years ago)

do the fall have a contract to play at every atp ever?

geeta (geeta), Friday, 20 December 2002 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a really really dull looking line up. But since this is ONLY a partial list I am sure that many more over the hill indie rock icons can be found to make an EVEN duller line up.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 20 December 2002 04:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Alex, I was just about to say... This seems pretty conservative. Hey, but Danielson Famile is cool.

Dan I., Friday, 20 December 2002 05:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Once again, no Boredoms on the east coast... :(

original bgm, Friday, 20 December 2002 05:35 (twenty-three years ago)

This is really kind of shit, isn't it?

Clarke B., Friday, 20 December 2002 08:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Only one band on there I actually love, and they aren't even playing the east coast!?!

Clarke B., Friday, 20 December 2002 08:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"I thought The Magic Band had already decided NOT to reunite..."

John French did make an announcement to that effect a little while ago after there were problems with the promoter of an earlier planned "reunion".

Bill Harkleroad was originally supposed to be with him but has been replaced by Denny Walley, don;t know what the story is there.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 20 December 2002 09:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Once again, no Boredoms on the east coast... :(
