i knew a guy who's career was to work on christmas. he worked for a church and could NEVER be at home for christmas. he hadn't in 30 years ... that song choked him up.

that puts that tune on a 9 outta 10 hanging ropes for me. (i'm assuming a depress-o-meter is measured by some sort of depressing item... a rope to hang yourself seems fairly applicable.)

an honorable mention should go to simon and garfunkle's "silent night" where they play the news clips in the background about murders and deaths and many other horrible things happening on christmas eve and christmas nights.

"I'll Be Home For Christmas" is depressing, and hit me extra hard once when I was playing it and noticed the WWII copyright date and... sigh.

Except I still don't get why you want to put the presents *on* the tree. You'd need a pretty sturdy bough to hold up a Playstation.

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" definitely, though all those WWII era Christmas songs (ie most of the the good ones) have that war weariness air of mourn to them. "White Christmas" especially.

"have yourself..." easily wins. one year, i even got choked up during the south park christmas special that features Mr. Hankey singing this song. fot those who have never watched south park, MR. Hankey is literally a piece of singing shit aka the Christmas Poo.
