manowar - classic or dud?

a lot of my close friends have an unhealthy penchant for this band and are actually off this weekend to holland to see them play. Huge in Europe, they haven't played Britain for years despite the fact they formed there and have an album called "Hail To England". Are Manowar the Metal Kings? Or just a bunch of fuddy duddies playing bad 80s cock rock?
Moreover, if you do like them - is it for the same reason one might like cheesy music or is it out of true respect for their musicianship/songwriting etc?
