Am I the only person who was immeasurably, uncontainably overjoyed by this album? C'mon people, affirm me!

Michael White, Monday, 23 December 2002 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite love the title track (last song). Heard it playing in the shop and bought it on the spot. Am I wrong, or is one of the members formerly the lead singer of the PeeChees?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 23 December 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't that the pattern alex?

_, Monday, 23 December 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, two does not a pattern make. Apart from Comet Gain, the only other "on the spot" purchase I've made in the recent past is the Flaming Lips (see that other thread).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 23 December 2002 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris(ser) from PeeChees is kind of an auxilliary member of Comet Gain, but yes, The Pattern is his main band.

I've heard amazing things about this record but haven't heard it. I get the feeling it's as good as the better Chisel/Ted Leo stuff... am I way off?

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

This album is amazing. The first 6 songs especially are peerless. WOW, every time.

Mister Craig, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. Especially Why I Try To Look So Bad. The follow-up is great too but this is my favorite.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 29 February 2008 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

I like it a lot, but my aging ears wish it were recorded as well as Sneaky. Comet Gain are not, I don't think, well served by Mid Fi.

They are one of the few bands that would actually get me out to see them live these days. The one time I saw them they were everything I wanted them to be.

dlp9001, Friday, 29 February 2008 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

Are they still a going concern here in 2008?

Alex in NYC, Friday, 29 February 2008 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

No idea, but I just went youtubing, and this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9kC2JKLU0

sounded every bit as great as it did umpteen years ago. Really shoulda been a hit, somewhere!

dlp9001, Friday, 29 February 2008 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

And not to change the topic, but the guy who posted that video has a collection that matches my taste in the mid 90's in a pretty scary way.

dlp9001, Friday, 29 February 2008 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

They played a gig in London a couple of days ago, Alex. I didn't go though. As for new records, I haven't heard of any, but I guess they are still going.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 29 February 2008 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

Gonna have to dig that disc out now.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 29 February 2008 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

city fallen leaves is only from 18 months or so ago, so it's not impossible they're working on a newie..

electricsound, Friday, 29 February 2008 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

They are still going, but as haphazardly, if not more so, than ever (and we love 'em for it, oh yes). David was living in France for a while, and various members were in various other places. They're playing a few UK dates soon, from what I know.

emil.y, Friday, 29 February 2008 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

There's meant to be some kind of comp of stuff covering the various lineups with a few new songs added in, and a double-A single I believe. That was the news back in November I think.

They're doing a super sounding show in Brighton in early April, and playing that Indietracks thing in Derbyshire in late July. Can we go emil.y? ;)

Mister Craig, Thursday, 2 October 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

Can we put bets on how many actual members of Comet Gain will turn up?

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

shame that it's missing everything from the sarah bleach era. i would love to have the stuff from holloway sweethearts and some hearts paid to lie on cd...

still a top bunch of songs though. 'you can hide' and 'if i had a soul' are particularly wonderful

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago)

xp I remember this band! But I don't really recognise any of the titles there

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

i remember getting v cross that their version of beatnik does not mention it's a Clean song anywhere on the cover or label

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

also where is hands fit?? my copy of that 45 is pressed off centre :(

new album. sounds pretty good really. growing new order influence subtle but consistent

imagine arse (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 04:05 (fifteen years ago)

New Order influence?!

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 09:12 (fifteen years ago)

I hear one!

imagine arse (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 10:20 (fifteen years ago)

I get no New Order out of this at all, but it is a really good Comet Gain record.

fffv, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 04:02 (fifteen years ago)

Really like this album, which gets better as it goes along. Who listens to them? I find their continuing existence kind of puzzling, even though I've been a fan for like 16 years...

dlp9001, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:56 (fourteen years ago)

i wore myself out on it a bit, but i do think it's their strongest one since tigertown pictures

dogs in hot cardies (electricsound), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:59 (fourteen years ago)

working circle explosive! does not deserve the exclamation point though

dogs in hot cardies (electricsound), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 02:00 (fourteen years ago)

That's the one that's on repeat at the moment. Yeah, it's really very great and too bad nobody cares.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 02:05 (fourteen years ago)

I really like this album, too. Haven't listened to it in awhile though. I'm not sure why nobody seems to care either.

Evan, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 04:06 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

Do these guys have any songs more in the vein of Love Without Lies? Everything else I've heard is a little bit shambling-indie for my tastes..
