I got my xmas gift a little early and it happened to be that new Camper Van Beethoven box set with 5 cds. Sure, I had 2 of the discs already, but holy crud, I'm just listening to what I guess was their first album, since it is just the self-titled "Camper Van Beethoven" and it's so much more than I expected. I sort of thought their older stuff would be boring ska mixed with banjo. It's that plus a lot more. And, oh yeah, it's not boring at all. I can hardly wait to hear the other stuff! I hope these jerks get back together. Cracker is okay, but not really (though their new album is actually pretty decent, surprise, surprise-- and I did happen to notice one of the lyrics in a song is by the Cracker guitarist who says, "I wasn't in Camper Van Beethoven", I suppose in a trying-to-be-funny way. Surprise, surprise again! This is the one song on that Cracker album that really sucks. David Lowery should not step aside to let some hard-rockin' dip with a soul patch sing a tune).

Anyone heard any news about the possible reformation of this once great band?

Camper Van Beethoven is playing at the 9:30 Club in DC on Jnuary 25th. $20 cover. If yer askin' bout them, yeah, they seem to be alive and well.

The s/t album is actually their third--the first one's "Telephone Free Landslide Victory," and the second (and far and away my favorite) is "II & III." The live set's dispensable, _Camper Vantiquities_ is just an expanded _Vampire Can Mating Oven_ and really kind of a footnote, but _II & III_ and the self-titled one... great great stuff.

one month passes...
Arg...I already have 4 of the 5 discs. (this always happens...Galaxie 500 box, Beat Happening box, etc.) So. Are the discs remastered or anything? Is the live disc really not worth it? I kind of want to buy it, but I need a good reason!

Depending on what day it is, I might say that II & III is one of my all-time favorite albums. Side two is unfuckwithable, especially the sublime sequence of "Circles," "Dustpan," "Sometimes," and "Chain of Circumstance." Trivia: the backwards vocals on "Circles" are "Oh no, here it comes again, that funny feeling." Chris Pedersen is the MASTER of the hi-hat (listen to "Circles" and "Dustpan" and tell me I'm wrong).

Did they restore the very very amusing liner notes for Vampire Can Mating Oven? They left them off the original Camper Vantiquities, which is a shame.
