can anyone help me with a strange computer problem

ok here's the deal:

i have two installations of winxp on my computer: one partition is supposed to be for audio apps, the other boot partition is for everything else (there are a couple other partitions on this drive, but they do not have OS installed)

the problem is in Reason, the save dialog box does not appear. the program IS trying to save the file, i.e. you can type and theoretically hit save and cancel and whatnot, but you can't SEE what you're doing because there is no dialog box. all other dialogs are functioning (open, etc.)

this only happens from the audio (let's call it d:, more on that later) partition. i have installed Reason onto the C: partion, and it works fine, and i think that running the program off D: while i'm in the OS installation on C: also works fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Reason many times, and that doesn't help.

OK, i said more on the drive letters... I partitioned this HD with partition magic. when i'm on the C: OS, the audio partition is shown as F:. when i'm on the audio partition's OS, the audio partition is shown as D:. C: stays constant in both situations. some of the other drives/partitions change letters also.

suspecting that this might be part of the problem (although Reason was working fine before and has apparently spontaneously started malfunctioning) i tried to force a change in the drive letters using partition magic. i won't do that again, as it made that partition unbootable, and i ended up just reformatting and reinstalling windows. which was fine once, but i don't really want to do it again.

so the only things that i can think to do: scrap this whole dual boot setup and live with the audio apps jumbled in with all this internet crap and assorted garbage on the other drive. or switch the audio stuff to the c: drive and use the d: for the other stuff, although probably the best way to do this would be to completely reformat the entire disk and just start from scratch (eww).

anyways, if any of you have any ideas about why this might be happening, i'd appreciate yr input.

thanks in advance

i should add

i am using a new video card which is running two monitors. there are settings within the video adapter drivers for where dialogs, etc are supposed to appear (which monitor, etc.) and there is some chance that this video card may be a part of what's happening. but again, it was working fine a few days ago.

i just turned off the second monitor and rolled back the drivers to an earlier version with no success.

aargh. well, it's not unusable, cuz i know what directory it defaults to and i can just save there and then move it to wherever the file needs to go. i wish i knew what was going on, though.

i just somehow got it to work when i hit the save patch button on the nnxt sampler. i got a dialog for that save and now the save file dialog is back.

i know this has been a real nail-biter for the rest of civilization.
