Taking Sides: David Letterman or Conan O'Brien

yeah, i know it's saturday, but when was the last time i asked a question?

the proper taking sides probably would've been david letterman or jay leno, but i figured most would side with letterman anyway. so i'm pitting letterman against the man who could be seen as his heir apparent, conan o'brien. so who's better? has letterman lost his edge or is he still the king? has conan been the same since andy left? who's a better gag: bud melman or triumph the insult dog? who's a better sideman: max weinberg or alan kalter? and who has the better musical guests?

fred solinger, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

All I've ever seen of the Letterman show was when he did a week in London, and it was rubbish, so I'll side with Conan the Barbarian instead.

DG, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

In The Year 2000 is funnier than ANYTHING Letterman has ever done.

JM, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i think that conan has lost some of it's edge since andy left but the skits/guests/band are still top notch. -the only thing that i could say about letterman is that his harrassment skits (taco bell etc.) are great..as for his interaction with guests/that bald guy in the band who's really annoying and the lame top 10-conan wins. last..if you have cable (in the u.s.) check out the daily show on comedy central

Kevin Enas, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Conan doesn't shut up. A friend was interviewed on the show once and was told in advance to sit back, make the minimum reply, and let Conan upstage him. It's embarrassing to see.

The Daily Show is the best show on TV. Did anyone see the Spice Girls interview??? has become legendary to me - Posh and Baby are on, you can tell that Posh is annoyed about something, probably the fact that Jon Stewart isn't giving them the usual royal treatment, and suddenly Posh leans over and says sourly, "Well I just don't think you're very funny." Ugly. Of course our man handles it like a pro - "That's actually a good question - what do Brits find funny?" "Well you know.... sarcasm..." "Wait, you haven't noticed the sarcasm dripping from my voice...?"

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, Letterman is okay enough but I find Conan and the Daily Show much funnier lately. Conan was funnier with Andy, but even without I would say it's still a bit sharper than Letterman.

Nicole, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Conan all the way.

Mike Hanley, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVID LETTERMAN!

Kodanshi, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

My feeling is that these people are probably all a bit rubbish. But I did actually see the Conan O'Brien show (what a name he has) a few months ago, and don't think I've seen the other character. So Conan gets my vote.

the pinefox, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

In the Year 2000, everyone knew that David Letterman way kicked Conan's ass. But Tracer is right - Jon Stewart is dah bomb.

Ally, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

David Letterman is a wrinked up hag of a host. Stale jokes, and an annoying ass kissing ugly musical director. Conan is the hero here.

Mike Hanley, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Letterman London show was beyond rubbish: like someone had edited Bagehot to conform to King Ralph...

And Conan wz a script-writer for The Simpsons: I'd even cut Terry Wogan slack if he had this on his CV.

BUT: "The World's Most Dangerous Band" — I •am• kinda fascinated by a group of musicians so pluperfectly shitty, in every respect, so blithely happily dubbing themselves this. Takes moxie, it seems to me. Like some runty kid saying "I'm the toughest", and taking a beating, and getting right up and saying, "Yes, but I AM the toughest..."

Plus you could hardly achieve such a supreme distillate of worthlessness by chance. My theory: Paul [thingie] is a kind of perverse secret guardian of the non- worthless, dedicating his life to ensuring that decent music was not tainted by association with the show'a horrible horrible host (and sacrificing his forever reputation in the process).

mark s, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Letterman al the way, if not for shtick like getting bitten by dingos then surely for ahving the man who co-wrote It's Raining Men as the leader of his house band.

Geoff, Saturday, 2 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Have only seen Letterman a couple of times ( and considering they don't show it here), he didn't strike me as particularly funny, so my money's on Conan. I still love self-deprecation and nobody does it like the freckle-faced, wavy-haired Irish guy with the big head.

ernest, Sunday, 3 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah the Magic Johnson show dripped so much talent my television left a puddle on the floor.

Mike Hanley, Sunday, 3 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What are all you crazy people talking about? There's no other answer but this: THICKE OF THE NIGHT.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 3 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Y'know, I still have never recovered from Pat Sajak's talk show being taken off the air.

Nicole, Sunday, 3 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Alan Thicke? Sean, you're on crack! bb I went to a taping of Mike Bullard the other day (Canadian Letterman copy for the rest of ya) wasn't overly impressed. Sorry to say.

I'd agree with the others that said that it's ALL about The Daily Show.

Kim, Sunday, 3 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If ESPN brought Clark Kilborn back to Sportscenter and had him hit on starlets in front of highlights from the Red Sox and Lakers games, Jon Stewart would have competition.

Otis Wheeler, Sunday, 3 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What's wrong with Alan Thicke, Kim? Huh? HUH? This is the man that wrote ALL THE GOOD THEME SONGS OF OUR AGE. The Facts of Life! Diff'rent Strokes! He wrote the Wheel of Fortune theme, for gosh sakes! He produced the Rene Simard show? How could his own evening talk show possibly be bad? I mean, it couldn't be any worse than the Joan Rivers Show, could it?

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 3 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

hahah! ok ok, I give I give! Alan Thicke is a deity who must be worshipped, impossibly plasticine good humour (eyebrows) and all. I'd vote for his original noon hour talk show though. Fool. ;)

Kim, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh God. I'm glad we all realize how much funnier Conan, Letterman, Jon Stewart, and Craig Kilbourn are than Leno who just has good writers. I prefer Bud Melman over insult dog. Better sideman? You forgot Paul Shaffer. I think they both get good musical guests. As it goes, Letterman has better impromptu humor. He is more natural for things just flying off his tongue. Conan has better planned jokes than Letterman does now. He used to write for Seinfeld and the Simpsons, so he is good at that stuff. Letterman used to be hilarious in his first five years. He has faded off a little bit since then. OVer the two though, i choose Letterman since Conan lost too much with Andy Richter.

Yet I think the most underrated comic is Craig Kilbourn. HIs show itself sucks, but his jokes and his delivery (he delivers an insulting joke with a crack of a smile on his face) are too good to miss.

Luptune Pitman, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Leno doesn't even merit discussion, imho. He's a comedian for senior citizens who are still pissed Diagnosis Murder has been taken off the air.

Kilbourn annoys me to the nth degree. I liked the Daily Show while he was on, but I love it now that it has Jon Stewart instead. Kilbourn relies too much on the smirking frat-boy school of humor.

Nicole, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

diagnosis murder has been taken off the air?

fred solinger, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If you hadn't been spending all your time building a robot, you'd know that.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Is this the point where I mention that Craig Kilborn ran on the track team with my (oldest) brother? Apparently, he's still fond of good ol' Hastings, which does more to damn him in my eyes than 8 million insulting jokes ever could.

David vs. Conan: I gotta go with Conan. I find him ridiculously funny. Dave is not without merit (for one thing, he's not Jay Leno), but I relate much more to Conan's self-deprecating wit and complete willingness to do absolutely bizarre sketches/set pieces. (Anyone else remember the toothless old guy in a dress singing "It's Raining Men" while two bodybuilders in Speedos posed behind him in a whirlwind of confetti? I think it was a tribute to Mother's Day or something.)

Dan Perry, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, Conan is good for complete bizarreness, that's for sure. NONE of his sketches ever make sense, which definitely is a plus in my eyes but David's good old fashioned annoyed-at-everything-and- anything stance does tons to endear him to me.

Ally, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Don't get me wrong: I'm a Letterman fan as well as a Conan fan. It's just that right now I think that Conan's humor gets more than Dave's. Both of them are light-years funnier than Leno. (The previous sentence is my entry in the Most Obvious Statement Of The Year competition.)

Dan Perry, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, that's right up there with "Fred needs a lot of attention" and "Jamie Oliver is a twat". Except it's even more obvious, so I salute you, good man.

Ally, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Odd thing is that I've heard about some of Leno's stuff from the late seventies second-hand through folks who remember him from then, and apparently the guy was fucking insane, wound up and funny as hell. Allegedly Bob Saget was the exact same way -- looks like both got hit with the careerism bug and that was that. What might have been, etc.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It's the middle-aged comic syndrome. I remember when Bill Cosby used to be fairly insane as well, back on the early records. Are there any comedians who maintained that level of edginess throughout a career? By the way, I've seen some of Saget's early stand-up, and it was actually fairly dull and obvious.

I wonder what a late night talk show hosted by Steven Wright would be like.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I wonder what a late night talk show hosted by me would be like.

Ally, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Probably like the 'How did you first hear your favourite band' thread. :-)

"Alright, ladies and gentlemen, we have such a show for you tonight. You know our first guest from movies like Star Wars and Trainspotting. Now you can see him in Moulin Rouge. Please welcome Ewan McGregor! (audience goes wild, blah blah blah) So, Ewan, let's get down to business. Do you think my Robo-Richey could destroy you?"

Ally, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Well Ms Kearney - or may I call you Ally? - I wouldn't know, but I'd bet my cyborg koala could really fuck you up."

DG, Monday, 4 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Don't forget Bill Hick's trashing of Leno over the whole corn chips advertising schting.

Geoff, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dude, Ewan McGregor doesn't have a cyborg Koala, he has a lightsabre. DUH.

And he can call me anything he likes, as long as I can sit there and look at him. And Robo Richey too, of course.

Ally, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No Ally, lightsabres aren't real. Cyborg koalas are though. Honest.

DG, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dude, if you believe that lightsabres aren't real, all I can say is you've been listening to too much commie propeganda. Of course they're real. What do you think, CGI made that shit in the film?

Ally, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Nope, they got a bunch of toddlers to felt-tip pen all the effects in. That's why they look so REAL!

DG, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't know why you're arguing with me, I mean, it's not like a lightsabre couldn't kick the crap out of Robo Richey. Faster than a bloody koala could, I'll tell you that.

Ally, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

See? SEE? That's the beauty of it - you expect nothing of the koala, and before you can do anything you're dead. Star Wars is rubbish anyway.

DG, Tuesday, 5 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Okay, so I'll have more than one guest so say I'm interviewing Keanu Reeves, he has a time travel phone booth AND those kick ass guns from the Matrix, I think HE could take your cyborg koala.

Ally, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You must excuse me -- surely Keanu would just say "Whoa...duh" and then fall over.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, like Mr Reeves could possibly operate a phone booth, let alone a time travelling one.

DG, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Who do you think was operating the phone booth, Abraham Lincoln?!?!

Ally, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Man, the Matrix sucked. Keanu Reeves is the Anti King Midas.

-- Mike Hanley, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No Ally, Bill S Preston, Esq.

DG, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, but Ted was totally telling Bill exactly what to do all the time, and HE was the one who came up with the clever plot regarding the keys and the trash can.

Ally, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Erm...yeah. [DG's memories of Bill and Ted have abruptly run out, and so he has no idea of what you mean.]

DG, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have an inside out knowledge of Bill & Ted, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, plus the better of Star Wars.

Anyhow, remember how in the film Ted's dad kept claiming Ted stole the keys to the jailhouse, and he was going to beat his ass, etc. Well Ted's all, I didn't steal no keys, jerkoff. But then when they go to break free the historical figures, He goes, hey, we have a time machine! We can go back in time to when my dad had the keys, and steal them to use them now and leave them someplace where we can find them. So Bill's all, where would you leave them? And Ted's all, hmmm, right here I guess. And there they were! "It worked!"

Then, while rescuing the historical figures, the dad walks into the cell, and Ted goes, "Remember the trash can. Remember to move the trash can". Then this trash can falls down, like it was booby trapped, and lands on the dad, trapping him so that they can release the historical figures.

Then of course they go to the school, throw a kick ass presentation that probably made them look like TOTAL GEEKS who did WAY TOO MUCH WORK to the rest of San Dimas High, as if San Dimas High is a real place and NOT Westwood High School in Mesa Arizona, and they got their A and Ted didn't have to go to military school, and thus their music could create total harmony in the universe for all the rest of time.

Ally, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh yes, it's all coming back now. Although the thing I remember most about '...Excellent Adventure' was how much my *dad* like it. Bizarre.

DG, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Bill & Ted was one of the only films in the entirety of my childhood up til I was 18 years old that my dad was willing to actually go to the cinema to see. What is it about dads and Bill & Ted? The History Channel connection?

Ally, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dunno...perhaps my dad was just like Bill or Ted, I don't know.

DG, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Bear in mind my father was an avid Beach Boys fan until he saw 'A Clockwork Orange', and he's listened to nothing but classical music ever since. That's warped.

DG, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm going to start a Bill & Ted thread, because that's the mood I'm in today. Bill & Ted is the best movie ever made, and I defy anyone to tell me otherwise. IT BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER.

So Conan's really getting hammered to shit in the ratings now, it appears. Not surprised, as his Tonight Show has actually gotten worse compared to where it began in June. Letterman is benefiting from people changing the channel to CBS after being away for a long while.

(Even weirder, Jimmy Fallon's show has settled into a really comfortable, often funny groove of its own.)

Leno may be going back to old time slot

Pressed by affiliates and shrinking ratings, NBC has a plan in the works to radically alter its late-night television lineup, restoring Jay Leno to his old spot at 11:35 each weeknight, while pushing the man who replaced him, Conan O’Brien, to a starting time of 12:05 a.m.

Speaking from a "musical guest" perspective, i sorely miss the bands that got booked for Letterman -- the talent was better, the lighting and staging were better, the surprise performances were better -- better than anybody else in the biz. NOBODY has stepped in to fill the void after Letterman's retirement.
