JC Chasez - "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)"

Reasons why this is light-years better than anything Justin Timberlake could hope to achieve:

- The drum cadence break in the middle. HOLY SHIT.

- The voice. There's absolutely no question as to who the better singer is now.

- Did I mention the drum cadence break?

I would probably ignore this track if it wasn't for the deeply brilliant drum cadence break. Three cheers to movie tie-ins that improve a song (Destiny's Child, take notes)!

like, there EVaH was any doubt that JC is kilometers ahead of Justin?

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 29 December 2002 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

JC was my favorite until Justin put out the really grate solo album (imho) I must hear this!!

Adam A. (Keiko), Sunday, 29 December 2002 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

this should go under "Paens to oral sex".

Curtis Stephens, Sunday, 29 December 2002 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The title confirms long-held suspicions that JC Chasez is in fact an inflatable love doll.

Seriously, tho, if Dan likes it then I have to pay attention. Which R&B auteur is behind this one?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 December 2002 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

blech. not feelin' it.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 29 December 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The title of the song alone means I must download this post haste just to see how JC can sing the phrase without laughing.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 30 December 2002 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my god! I just heard this for the first time! It's like it was tailor-made for me to like it! More on why if my enthusiasm lasts into the second listen.

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 30 December 2002 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

ehhhh. this really isn't anything. way too 'nsync/1997/white/stiff. the sexy stuff, he just can't sell it.

i'm not really sure why justin can pull off what he does. i don't know why i was more willing to give justin a chance than jc. justin kind of took on another character, kind of. he wasn't justin from 'nsync anymore, he was justin timberlake, a crazy guy who hangs out with black men in the parking lot of 7-11 and videotapes himself having his lip bitten. he went too far almost but not too far.

jc looks like the little gay guy from will and grace but made bigger. he's unpleasant. the second most unpleasant 'nsync guy behind chris kirkpatrick who is a holocaust denier and a pervert.

d k (d k), Monday, 30 December 2002 06:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say he sounds more genuine on the sexy growls than Justin does (even if those are the most embarrassing parts of the song). Really, I can't deny much of what you say about the song, but then again 1997 'Nsync song didn't have GIGANTIC FUCK-OFF DRUMLINE BREAKS in the middle of them.

I should start a thread about how one segment of a song can completely sell you on the whole thing, to the point where if that component was missing, you'd ignore/dislike/hate the song.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 December 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not that great but I like it a lot. If it were 7 minutes long and it had a noise break it'd be perfect.

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 30 December 2002 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha you guys are all DRUNK! "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)" = the sound of a man trying SO hard, a randy dog humping Pharrel's leg, pleading on the wrong side of the right door, getting it wrong then humping some more anyway.

This is terrible, sub-Timbaland wicka-wicka-wicka ABSURDITY that will go down in history as being pop's most embarrassing solo breakout attempt until Chasez attempts to recover from THIS debacle in three years time. Seriously, he wants to be Justin so bad it hurts him in his soulless, vibe-biting heart. And the VIDEO! That hair! That warddrobe! Those dance moves! Congrats, JC, on the strength of five minutes' work, you've just successfully copped the title of Most Absurd Man Alive from an idle Antonio Banderas. A tip: it might be a good idea to ditch the varicolored coveralls before you come up to accept your award.

NB: I've only heard this song/seen the video once, and I did really want it to be good - what a miserable first impression it made. Plus the drum thing is TERRIBLE!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

In fact, after just downloading and watching the video again, I'm fully prepared to say that the drum break (and its attendent 'choreography', which is downright uproarious in its overwhelming crapness) may be what completely *ruins* the song for me.

There's a nice hook in the chorus, though. I'll bet Justin would've nailed it.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Justin would have nailed it to a cross and shat upon it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

This doesn't have anything to do with Timbaland? How is it sub-Timbaland? I don't think it sounds like Justin or Nsync either. It clearly owes a large debt to Montell Jordan.

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

If anything it sounds like Jordan Knight's collaborations with Jimmy Jam And Terry Lewis.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

This doesn't have anything to do with Timbaland? How is it sub-Timbaland?

It's Dallas Austin trying (badly) to bite on Timbaland's "Dark Days, Bright Nights" beats.

And is "Give It To You" one of the tracks Jordan Knight did with Jam and Lewis? Cause if so, I think I like Jordan Knight better.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

That's because Jordan Knight is a better singer than JC Chasez and JJ/TL are better producers than Dallas Austin.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Fair enough.

I don't think I rate sheer singing ability as highly as you do, Dan. Obviously I understand the value of being a grebt singer, but if the single's weak, it's little consolation in the end (see "Dirrty").

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 December 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that, as a singer, I pay far too much attention to the singing at the expense of the other parts of the record. For example, on this record I'm so ecstatic that it isn't Justin's airy unsupported mewling that I'm forgiving the basic beat for being deeply uninspired and flaccid until the drumline break. I disagree strongly about "Dirrty", though; that song is pure class from the ground up, from the synth horn stabs to the snarly bounce to the whining sound effects floating in the back of the chorus to Redman's verse to Christina's fantastic vocal performance. But having said that, "I'm A Slave 4 U" is still a better song because the dichotemy between the singer and the beat is stronger and I'm a complete sucker for the Missile-Command-on-acid groove running through that era of Neptunes productions. (It's too bad that Aaliyah never got the chance to do her Nine Inch Nails collaboration, as that would have destroyed all comers.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 December 2002 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

WHY HASN'T THE PERMED MULLET BEEN MENTIONED????

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 30 December 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't seen the video!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 December 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Go to Launch.com. He's so fugly it's hilarious. (the song's fugly too. "Cry Me a River" kicks the shit out of it! DAN LOSES!)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 30 December 2002 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Whenever someone mentions Cry Me a River I listen to it.
Hrm.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 30 December 2002 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

That's not a mullet!

(Horrible video, though. Why is Pink's friend from "Get THe Party Started" in it?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 December 2002 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet she feels like a jerk. She totally ditched Pink to go hang out with Mullet Von Second Fiddle.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 December 2002 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

(Also, "Cry Me A River" would be passable if he would tone down his horrifying falsetto (which only worked in "Gone").

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 December 2002 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, a major flaw with the "Cry Me A River" video is that no matter how intent she is on her phone conversation, she'd hear Justin's yelping if he was that close behind her.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 December 2002 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

But on the other hand, the video for "Blowing Me Up (With Her Love)" is accompanied by the song "Blowing Me Up (With Her Love)".

This, in my mind, is a grievous mistake.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

It would be a better video if it was for "My Neck, My Back", yes.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha NOW we're on the same page...

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, the song doesn't do much for me, although it gets a little more interesting after the drum break. Awful awful video too.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 01:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I just wish he'd named it "Suck it!"

"Suck It!" by JC Chasez. That would be awesome.

And isn't "Every Dream Home A Heart Ache" by Roxy Music actually "Blowin' her up (with my Love)"?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

First i thought he was trying to imitate Baha-Men but then i realised its the best Baha-Men song evah

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

For your information, the song some of you are working so hard to tear apart was named one of the best songs of 2002 by the NY Times. "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)" kicks ass (love the drum cadence break) and the vocals are fucking great. JC can sing rings around Justin. Poor Justin wishes he had that power, versatility and soulfulness. Alas, his thin voice is stuck in two modes: whiney and super annoying (AKA "His over-used falsetto").

Some of you are either ignorant and jealous haters who wish you could sing like JC (it must suck not be as talented or as good looking as a boyband member) or moronic Justin Timberlake teenies who actually think he has talent and can sing (could anything be worse than that piece of shit called "Justified"?). Either way, it must suck to be some of you.

Bite me, Saturday, 4 January 2003 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh. Googlah!

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 4 January 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I do have to agree though, Yahoo does have a bunch of morons.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Saturday, 4 January 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
This is getting lots of play here now, and I like it. Yes, Chasez sounds kind of not dirty enough to sell it, but the track is great (and the drumbreak too).

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 20 February 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's why I don't remember this thread, I was out of town. Haven't heard the song, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

I've been listening to this a lot recently. Timberlake's way better than JC, but "Blowin' Me Up" boasts a brilliant hook...It just needs better verses!

Tape Store, Sunday, 27 May 2007 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Chasez sounds kind of not dirty enough to sell it, but the track is great (and the drumbreak too).

I saw an interview on Popworld with JC, and he seems like the least dirty guy there ever was. It was bizarre. Most former boy band members should be total pervs.

I think JC is a bit like the Gary Barlow of this situation...overall more talented, but no commercial match for the far more lustworthy Justin/Robbie (who also don't happen to be all that bad musically either).
