i want Dubz Deluxe 'To The Break' - possibly on Atletico records, from about 1998 - a monotonous plodder with a funk guitar loop, dubby sirens and a vocal hook repeating 'keep going to the break, break break break' over and over - snatched 30 seconds of it on Napster once but nothing more since...can anyone help?

also, there's apparently an Alan Braxe remix of a Britney track that only came out in France - anyone know anything about that?

what are YOU still lacking after all this time?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 29 December 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a house remix of Funky Nassau which Will White played at Glastonbury in the Glade and I was sure would go top 10 on release, cos it was very Tim Deluxe and in style at the moment and really just a fantastically produced record.

Anyway I waited months to find out what it was, until Will White came to Dublin. So I asked my friend who is support DJ to ask Will, and he did, and Will White said he doesn't know who did it, he bought it in Bristol and he's been asked by Fatboy Slim and all these other people what it is and he has no idea.

FWIW Will White is quite a good DJ, he really rocked the glade that time in Glastonbury. Never liked his band much.

Bal Sagoth: "The Splendour of a Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath the Blazon of the Hyperborean Empire Part III"
Very awkward to search for since it has such a long title and the fact that the "Part III" bit is importnat,.

Frank Zappa: "Let's Make the Water Turn Black"
The jazz version on "Make a Jazz Noise Here". I have it now despite months of searching.

That........ song!!!

Curtis Stephens, Sunday, 29 December 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Moonraker by Foremost Poets: would/does sound killer in a club, but I remember feeling a little foolish for forking out close to a tenner for it when it came. Gigolo techno basically but on a gimmick tip with the whole "this is a test... this is a test...." thing.

'Let's go swimming' by Arthur Russell was on a Strutt compilation released earlier in the year, entitled "Disco not Disco vol 2". It had the amazing "Problemes du Amour" by Alexander Robotnick. Worth it for that alone.

....and finally I've been after a vinyl copy of "Hella Good" by No Doubt and that also that Tim Deluxe tune from the summer, since the summer.

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 29 December 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

bob snoom, Tuesday, 31 December 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

there's this amazing very early 60s ska collection I bought at the Tower outlet for a dollar 7 years ago that just has a great sound that no other "original ska" collection I've found has (and I've heard a lot ). So it drives me crazy that I can't find the tape. It has Desmond Dekker, the Maytals, Lord Creator and some others, but the best is this Jimmy Cliff song from before he was reggae that goes something like:

Man to man is unjust
You don't know who to trust

something something something

A man from Kingston town
had a friend his whole life long
But when they were seventy-one
He shot him just for a pound.

Man to man is unjust . . . etc.

Paul SciFi Soul to thread, please!

Some info on that Jimmy Cliff song for Felicity from my Ska and Rocksteady Guru GENE...

The track is called "Trust No Man" by Jimmy
Cliff, a very sweet ska track that he did in 64 backed by Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. I'm not sure what comp they had though but that track does appear on a comp called "Real Jamaican Ska" contained songs selected by Curtis Mayfield himself. Here is an excellent review of the CD:

marianna, Friday, 3 January 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I have Moonraker on MP3 now, but thanks Nik all the same. Which Tim Deluxe tune did you mean? "It Just Won't Do"? I'd have thought that was absolutely everywhere, having charted and all that. Or do you mean "We All Love Sax".

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a 7" single of Dutch band THE SHANKS riotously (no, I won't say wrecklessly) covering Wreckless Eric's "Whole Wide World" that I believe was produced by Mayo Thompson and released in (I think) 1989 on a European label. I've been looking for it for years but haven't been able to find it.

The way it sounds in my head is fucking amazing; I wonder what it really sounds like after a few years...

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I know this is from the history books but...I have Let's Go Swimming 12"(no picture sleeve) on Logarhythm. I've never seen a copy of it on Rough Trade. The song is on World of Echo, which came out on Rough Trade, but drastically different. What is this 12"? What's it look like? Is it the same 3 mixes as on the Logarhythm 12".

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The single version of Plan B by Dexy's.

My searching has been limited to having it in my Slsk wishlist for about a year, but I don't have a record player anyway.

Fug (Ferg), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't quite follow, Dan - which 12" are you talking about in the "What is this 12"?" question?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Keith was looking for Let's Go Swimming 12" on Rough Trade. I've never seen one, only the Let's Go Swimming 12" on Logarhythm, with no picture sleeve. I was asking if it really existed, what did it look like, etc, was it the version of the song on the World of Echo LP on Rough Trade or the versions from the 12" I have? Did Logarythm license to or from RT, etc etc...trying to get a disography in order...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks nick. Already tried Gemm - trouble is they list the record, but when you look at details its not in stock, it's on order. Which means they will not be able to get it (at least that's always been my experience...)

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, yeah - sorry - didn't check properly. discogs.com list it on a couple of compilations, but if you need the 12" I guess that's different.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

CA$H by Nasty Rox Inc (ZTT answer to AOC, included CJ Mackintosh as the DJ) - CD copy. saw it years ago once in Leeds .. let it slip by (student budgets were tight and i didn't have cd player at the time) but boy do i regret it now. have never seen the cd since.
never appears on ebay etc etc .. if any ILM'ers have this elusive item i would be very interested .. though i suspect that
my quest continues ..

The Felix Da Housecat remix of Brandy's What About Us. Only released in the US (as a promo I think) so I can't get it. In theory it's genius but Felix is rather erratic. Has anyone heard it? Is it worth pursuing?

Shangri-La (Shangri-La), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a 7" single of Dutch band THE SHANKS riotously (no, I won't say wrecklessly) covering Wreckless Eric's "Whole Wide World" that I believe was produced by Mayo Thompson

Strange about the Shanks...I just found a copy of their 1989 CD (horrible title "Masterbait") at the Salvation Army last week. I like the sound of it, but the songs are underwritten...I'll bet the cover version is pretty good. The album was produced by Mayo Thompson, so I'll bet the single goes w/the album. The CD is on the Schemer label "a division of Semaphore," which looks to have had a NY office at one point.

I'm still looking for their 2nd album, but it took me 6 years to find this one...

dlp9001, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Strange about the Shanks...
-- dlp9001 (dlp900...), December 16th, 2003.
------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for writing! Yeah, I remember that album -- this 7" was rawer and I just remember their cover being so fucking good, raw Flaming Groovies-y good, up there with Charlie Pickett and The Eggs "Live at the Button."

Semaphore, ahhhh yes -- another label/ indie distributor that went bust owing me and many others $$ -- Hans from that label, he was a great guy and I think he started Brinkman??? I forget his last name.
