it is the musical equivalent to the dogtown and z-boys infomercial/documentary.

john and steve have to eat too, you know.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

this is what the song was written for. logically, if the song has any value at all besides being a catchy old rawk standard (which is the only reason for being surprised or offended by this new use) this is the only logical test you can give it: removed from its original context and shoved into a new one, does the song break down and reveal its inherent weakness as agit-prop (this isn't quite the right word, as I think the "message" of AITUK is more in the singing itself than the words), or does it expose everything that wants to be associated with it (i.e. Sony) as bogus?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the right tempo.

Callum (Callum), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

And what are the ethical implications of seeing Tony Hawk play a Kwik-E-Mart employee on NERD's "Provider" video ?

V. (V.), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought they had been stating repeatedly since the reunion tour that they are now only in it for the money. Seems like a good way to raise a little cash.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't this moral lapse already happen when Motley Crue covered the song back in the early 90's?

maria b (maria b), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

ethical implication: burn down home, dig up neighbor's lawn, light a doob and wait for the cops. if you're that bothered by this, you're not for this brave new world, bub.

Lou Ford, Tuesday, 31 December 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Instead of sleeping, at night I play Tony Hawk 4.

It's funny, the only song on the soundtrack to that game that I don't much like is "Anarchy In the UK". That and whatever that AC/DC song is that it starts out to. Other than that, I find the soundtrack to that game KILLAH.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this the appropriate thread for me to reveal (yet again) that I've always hated this song with a fiery passion and have never found any redeeming value in The Sex Pistols? (PIL, on the other hand, put out two classic albums in the generic one and _Happy?_.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know if somebody said this in that Lydon vs. Strummer thread, but, musically, the Sex Pistols pretty much suck. They're clowns, worse than the Barenaked Ladies or Insane Clown Posse

Horace Mann, Tuesday, 31 December 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

To a 19 year old who only just discovered the joys of a distorted guitar and unsynthesized drums through Lightning Bolts '13 Monsters'; the Sex Pistols suck ched. THPS4 however kicks ched. Anyway more annoying is the inclusion of a Aesop Rock track, annoying in the way that Aesop Rock is utter dullardian dick splash.

_Gibby_, Tuesday, 31 December 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway, the game is hardly safe; most of the *establishment* (who i assume is who you believe the sex pistols to have been saying fuck you to) are way more threatened by young vital skater dudes than some muddy pub rock middle class sloganeering wank.

_gibby_, Tuesday, 31 December 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the only song I don't really like on the THPS4 soundstrack is the Distillers one. Otherwise, yeah, it's pure gold.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 31 December 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i mean the biggest fuck you in punk appearing in a family safe sony product,

as opposed to on a family safe Virgin LP?

i'm annoyed with that crap NWA song. i'm bummed there's no cky nor mellincollin... i've always liked those emo-y/math-y skate anthems.

nickalicious: do you like cky's "disengage the simulator"?

gygax!, Tuesday, 31 December 2002 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The implication is simply that it rubs salt in the wound of already having to hear such a god-awful soundtrack. I hate the Sex Pistols and I can safely say I grin when that songs comes on, as it's the only one that doesnt make me cringe, save for that Biz Markie song which I enjoy because, Biz Markie, c'mon. Other then that, it's further proof that the sound tracks to Tony Hawk games has been getting progressivly shittier. I mean, the first game used a fuckin Primus song, and the latest has some pop-punk song complaining about MTV.
