NAS: hate me...now?

some say that his early work was pretentious ghetto-intellectual masturbation and thank god he finally hooked up with cutting-edge producers to carry him. and some cling to illmatic as one of the most perfect albums of all time. cough.

bonus question: is his appearance on 'verbal intercourse' the greatest guest verse of all time? classic or dud, search and destroy.

ethan, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Nobody ever told me his early work was pretentious ghetto- intellectual masturbation. NOW I'm interested.

Josh, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I though the Pretentious Ghetto-Intellectual Masturbation Sessions were the only thing worth listening to, if by that you mean Illmatic. That album makes me think of Rakim. I know he doesn't sound like Rakim. Maybe in that even as he's going all Big Theme on you, he's also layin into you six ways from Tuesday and you're never anxious that he doesn't know where he's going or what he's talking about. I think the music fits on that album too, which really completes the holistic it-must-be-thusness of it. Is it that he never had much of a sonic vision? You're right - Dre, Premier and Timbaland are just possibly the guys you want producing your album... so why does the interplay btw music/lyrics on later efforts come off so weak? Could the answer be Pete Rock? Or just a classic example of an endless sophomore slump?

bonus answer: No no, Capadonna's shot on Ghostface Killa's "Winter Warz" is the best guest verse of all time. Surprised you even asked that.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Banal but massively pertinent fact: Illmatic was just about the last hip hop album that fit on to one piece of vinyl. As such, it's thankfully short on filler. And it works as an album in that way that so many albums don't these days: the sum is greater than the individual parts - sometimes I think there isn't one outstanding track on it, but I'd rate among my favourite albums. Everything else he has done, bar If I Ruled The World - key non-house track of the Notting Hill Carnival whatever year that was - is pretty useless.

Mark Morris, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think you've got Illmatic absolutely right, Mark. I love it for those reasons though no individual track ever really stood out from it for me.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I know the production's the thing these days, but to me Nas was one of the best pure lyricists of the mid 90's mainstream rap boom. He didn't quite have the storytelling skillz of Biggie, the coolness of Snoop or Q-Tip, or the personality of either of those three, but if lyrics matter at all to you, Illmatic is classic. I'd quote a line but there just so many lines that are striking to me; maybe it's just ihaveadecentvocubalary masturbation akin to the undie hiphop everybody's hatin on, but Nas's use of pronounciation and sounds of rhyming words is second to none in recent years, except maybe Eminem, who definitely listened to Nas back in the day. And "Oochie Wally". So classic.

Larms, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i damned this one by mentioning 'pretentious ghetto-intellectual masturbation', didn't i? i don't believe that hardly at all, but i figured it would be a good idea to suggest a criticism so this didn't turn into the nas lovefest. anyway, some thoughts: everyone always seems to mention how not one track is better than the next on illmatic but it all comes together as a great album--not true! sure, all songs are fantastic, yes, but some definitely stand out as better ('memory lane') or worse ('one time 4 your mind') than others, although it is a fact that all the singles are absolutely flawless.

oh, and cappadonna, eh? go back and listen to the nas verse on raekwon's album again. and again and again until you have it memorized. 'props is a true thugs wife'? damn! 'trick my wisdom with the system that imprisoned my son'? this is nas with street knowledge, it's one of the best instances of internal rhyme i've ever heard, and dear god, listen to the flow on the first four lines.(check out the transition to rae's verse, where he's saying practically NOTHING compared to nas. it's a slap in the face to how empty wu rhymes often are.) for christ's sake, the whole thing is so much better than cappa babbling about his fade being like a porcupine it's not even funny.

ethan, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

oh, and i'll admit nas doesn't compare to biggie with storytelling skills (or even eminem), but whatever the fuck sort of 'coolness' you're talking about, ridiculous cartoon no-limit grill-shill snoop and goofy nasal sellout q-tip don't have it (for fuck's sake, he's hanging out with nsync now. nas may have fallen off, but tip has FALLEN OFF). as a persona, nas is one of the greatest ever, from street philosopher to fallen god to hopeful comeback (please god).

ethan, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dunno Nas all too well (a college roommate used to chuckle at Illmatic as much as he chuckled at Stay Hungry (a Twisted Sister tape)), but I find it somewhat disquieting that his album covers have gone from showing his face against a city street to making him look like some sort of Sphinx-like poseur. I think that's reflected in his music (the few tracks I've heard, at least).

And Q-Tip, Q-Tip, Q-Tip - it's disquieting to hear him schill for the shake-it-fast generation ("Vivrant Thing", "Breathe & Stop"), but it worked for Busta, I guess. (I'll have to start a new thread.)

David Raposa, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Is Q-Tip really hanging out with N'Sync? But that's the thing about musicians: they never behave according to your wishes. Anyway, that reminds of me of something I read with the two man Pharcyde rump claiming that Fat Lip was ousted for being friends & working collaborator with that guy from BH 90210

Mark Morris, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

dude, he got pharcyde to be ON the show, and did an album with them. later on, pharcyde also did (q-tip alert!) a song with KORN. jesus christ, man.

ethan, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I just think Snoop and Tip have cool voices, you know, like cool. And I kind of like Tip's new stuff. Am I banned from future postings now?

Larms, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

snoop and tip do indeed have wonderful voices, but their image isn't really 'cool' in the way that nas certainly was. remember when 'snoop doggy dogg!' was the punchline to every fucking late night talk show joke for practically all of 1994? he's a fucking clown.

re: my above post about pharcyde, 'he' refers to the guy from 90210, not fatlip, who i like quite a bit and had a superb self- deprecating single in 'what's up fatlip?' and is an all-around good guy.

ethan, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I understand now. What I meant was his voice and delivery are great; he has the ability to elevate an average song or lyric into at least goodness just by sayin shit the way he does. At least I think so.

And since when do late night talk show hosts decide what's cool? Least cool people ever.

Larms, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

excuse me, i think that was my point.

ethan, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ah I see. I thought you meant that he wasn't cool because they were making fun of him. But... I guess you weren't?

I understand now., Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i meant he wasn't cool because he was this big stereotypical pop culture reference. if snoop is cool, then joe camel and mr.t are cool too. and for god's sake people, they aren't.

ethan, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

but they all have cool voices, and that's what matters.

does joe camel speak?

larms, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ethan, yr all wet. Pop culture reference-points can TOO be cool.

He just picked a goddamn goofy name. Say it a couple times. Funny, no? Meanwhile, he is/was a seriously ill rappper.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And it sounds REALLY goofy when spelled. In song. Double gizeeeee indeed.

Larms, Wednesday, 6 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

But his name was way cooler when he dropped the "Doggy". We got those fucking lazy jokes in the UK, too.

Ethan's right about "One Time 4 Your Mind" being a bit of a filler, BTW (though I still think virtually everything on Illmatic is awesome).

i sound like a fag here but i stand by my judgment that snoop isnt actually "cool" in the same way that illmatic-era nas is...

and what, Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Nas is cool like Miles Davis, Snoop is cool like Muddy Waters. Respect based on effortless virtuosity vs. respect based on elder statesman status the result of labored virtuosity.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I think apparently effortless complexity vs. clearly labored-upon complexity is the key here.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link

early/mid-90s snoop is just as effortlessly "cool" as illmatic-era nas imo. i wouldn't conflate snoop's continued pop culture relevance/him capitalizing on it (doggy fizzle televizzle) with 'labored virtuosity'

J0rdan S., Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:29 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah when i think of cool rappers i think of like t.i., kane, real slick type dudes, not the dude who did dizzle tellyfizzle or whatever the fuck that was called

i guess i was listening to nas in 94 and not snoop so i didnt get up on him til i was buying every no limit release and by then he was basically a punchline

and what, Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

dont get me wrong his albums are still dope but to me hes like luda or redman or something not a "cool" rapper

and what, Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm talking specifically about his early 90s rhymes though, the polysyllabic acrobatics sound mad contrived to me, which isn't a "problem" per se but is distinct from Esco's naturalistic rhyme schemes & flows.

yeah i see that but i mean snoop, luda and redman have all been given the opportunities to make themselves parodies to middle aged white people, be it on the view, crash or some fox sitcom. nas and kane and whoever never really got that chance and who knows if they would've taken it. maybe not but idk

i mean ethan i wouldn't recommend seeing t.i. play some herb ass 19 year old wanna be dealer in american gangster

yeah i mean i can see this, snoop's rhyme schemes early do seem to be much more studied or maybe calculated, whereas nas it's just like whatever is coming out of his mind that minute, in which case yeah nas is more 'effortless'

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:44 (sixteen years ago) link

big hoos i never really thought about it that way but youre right - even on doggystyle snoop rhymes feel like a non-rapper figuring out the game instead of a natural born mc with lyrics flowing out the mouthpiece

and what, Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

like yknow how sometimes a producer or an r&b singer or some other type of non rapper will get on a track with a verse and its technically flawless from being either ghosted or meticulously written out but in the end it seems too professional & cold

and what, Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:48 (sixteen years ago) link

i get that feel from luda too but not reggie noble

and what, Sunday, 13 April 2008 19:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah and I imagine Nas goes through a serious drafting process (or at least that he probably did once), but he doesn't sound like he does. Even with some of Ghost or Rae's stuff (Doom is an obv choice here), it's like yeah yall can shout and sound compelling and all that but I can still damn near hear the strikethroughs in your notebook.
