I say Boston for "More Than A Feeling". And the whole spaceships on album covers thing is class.

Only thing Journey have going for them is that they were the first band to have a videogame based on them, and this is a bit dubious anyway. I mean, anyone ever play that Aerosmith game? PAIN.

boston beats journey for releasing two worthwhile albums, and having the sense not to release too many more than that in their prime.

TS: Beatles vs Oasis

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

(Obviously I was exaggerating for effect but, come now, Boston not only pioneered the sound that dominated FM radio for years afterwards by selecting and fusing the most pop elements of Yes and Zeppelin and southern rock but they could sing in perfect four-part harmony. They were a landmark in recording/production. "Don't Look Back" is incredible with the lead guitars sounding so implausibly massive, announced with their spaceship entries, against the ethereal washes of rhythm guitar, the choir just hovering above it all. And it all sounds so lush and overcoloured. Like, they could actually pull off the longer instrumental bits, which they didn't leave out on their biggest albums, unlike Journey. "Hitch a Ride" is great too. And "A Man I'll Never Be", it just keeps building and dissolving and teasing until the final climax at "I can't keep fighting this feeling" - it takes so long to reach this point. The twin chorus guitars! The riffs from "Don't Look Back" and "Peace Of Mind"! Every moment of "More Than a Feeling"! The fact that when I bought the first album, I realized I'd heard every song but one on the radio numerous times! Then I heard the other one a little later! So Tom Scholz might take the diddly-wah a little far some times. So Don't Look Back (the album) peters out on side 2. So I don't really need to hear "Smokin'" again for a little while. So they got a little formulaic and I don't even really know what they did after the second album. Journey had some catchy tunes but it goes no further. Without Boston there to blaze a trail, I don't even want to think where they'd be.)

+ my friend told me he saw Boston a couple years ago and Brad Delp still hits all the high notes and Tom Scholz gets all the spaceship notes perfectly live. And they played "More Than a Feeling" three times in one show.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 07:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"spaceship sounds".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 07:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i only really (consciously) know more than a feeling, which is great,by boston, and can't think of anything off hand by journey,so boston it is,i suppose...
also, sundar makes a fairly persuasive arguement...

Oh, please, this is like comparing the Bee Gees and the Bay City Rollers. Boston's worst albums kick Journey's worst albums' asses, and Boston's best albums kick Journey's -- well, Journey don't have any best albums.

If you wanted to give Journey a fighting chance, you'd have pitted them against REO Speedwagon (and they'd still lose).

did Kevin Cronyn (or whatever-the-fuck-that-REO Chuckwagon-leadsinger's name was) have a mullet?

what am i saying? even if Kevin Cronyn had a mullet, Journey would still win 'cause nothing beats the Steve Perry mullet!

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Journey have got more classic songs, so I would choose them.

REO Speedwagon couldn't even beat the Michael Stanley Band

dave q, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Boston for sure. I heard Sib Hashian on the radio this morning talking about how much of an asshole Tom Sholz was and how he wouldn't play with him again no matter how much money they threw at him.

Plus check out the fur on Sib.

Boston's production is really quite gorgeous, especially on the first album. They were truly in a class by themselves. Plus there are only two albums of theirs you really need and both can be fished out of any thrift store bin so the upfront investment is small. For Journey you'd have to pay for a GH cd and still would end up skipping 3/4 of the tracks.

Damn Sundar, I need a Boston album now!

original bgm, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh man. Not only does the drummer have a perfect '70s white-guy fro, but he's TWIRLING HIS DRUMSTICKS!

I guess it is in the sense that both were big-selling bands; are you saying one of them is obviously bad? Which one? And would that be pre- or post-disco Bee Gees?

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom Scholz is Brian Wilson & Kevin Shields in a better-adjusted version. Boston wins.

J0hn Darn13ll3 (J0hn Darn13ll3), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

um, nightranger.

I don't wanna talk to the guy! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, man, have any of you seen the photos in the new Boston album? For those alone, Journey wins.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 04:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Meaning you're going to scan them in for us.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven months pass...
I'm glad I searched for this thread before I started a new one!

Journey has a better singer. Boston has more songs that I am familiar with (all of which are ARENA ROCK HOOK CITY)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 30 December 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know that Steve Perry is any better than Brad Delp. They both have kind of a half-assed blue-eyed-soul thing happening. But overall, Boston kicks Journey to the curb.
