Perfect as Brian Wilson's backing band, but what's their own stuff like?

Do their own records justify their existence, or would they be better off persuading Brian Wilson to do a follow-up tour: 'Smile - the lost masterpiece live'.

I quite liked the Bali album. "Telemetry" is a great song. If you don't mind your avant power pop being a mite self-conscious, it's worth investigating.

Geir Hongro likes them.

Bali is worthwhile, the new one Mind If We Make Love To You isn't. Haven't heard any of the others. Sometimes it's tough to find the songs in admist all the layers of studio trickery ...

Thanks for the advice folks. Looks like 'Bali' might have to go on my shopping list. Any more thoughts?

Wondermints sleeve art and press photos = massive, hideous DUD

Dunno, I liked the new one, from the few listens I've given it. Just as good as 'The Wondermints' and 'Bali' IMO. Perhaps a 'bigger' sound... 'Ride' is a wonderfully spot-on, grinning Beach Boys 1968-72 pastiche. :-) 'Something I Knew' is a certifiably stonking song; I have no doubt about that. I remember, otherwise, the album being generally at least very good, if no masterpiece.

five years pass...

I bought Bali in 98 after all the Brian Wilson hype. Kinda was meh about it then.

I revisited it earlier this year, and found nostalgia for it. Decided I should check out their other albums.

Eventually, a handful of songs from their 95 album struck me, and their catalog slowly built upon that.

I initially wrote them off for having something(s) missing, but upon revisiting, I feel like what's there works too well to dismiss in total.

three years pass...

These guys must be pinching themselves every day about the fact that they get to go on a national tour with Brian Wilson the Beach Boys. Not to mention the fact that they are making more money than they ever could have expected.

even the High Llamas couldn't start up a good relationship with Brian and his management. how did the Wondermints convince Brian that they weren't a bunch of weirdos?

how did the Wondermints convince Brian that they weren't a bunch of weirdos?

Because they've never been photographed with Mike Love.
