one of the turtles albums was produced by Ray Davies. they were back-up singers for, inter alia T. Rex, Todd Rundgren, and the Psychedelic Furs. some of the shows they DJ'd in the Seventies are allegedly classics. and they did the soundtrack music for "strawberry shortcake."

what's there not to like about them?

and yes, lest we forget ... they were back-up singers for Zappa. obviously, i do not hold that against them (oh no i don't).

four years pass...

They're song "Keep it Warm" is legend! Well maybe not, but I certainly enjoy it so much, after repeated listens.

two years pass...

is anything else by them worthwhile?

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Thursday, 31 December 2009 06:19 (sixteen years ago)

I long ago got rid of their first LP, The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie and wish I hadn't. I think it's a bit like Rundgren's Something/Anything; many skewed styles of 70s pop-rock, and of course, great harmonies.

Turtles stuff is fucking a-mazing

eight years pass...

got The Phlorescent Leech and & Eddie. it's great stuff, kind of west coast psych folk rock. imo the Turtles was one of the cooler mainstream US psych pop bands and these guys carried that spirit throughout their career. this isn't too far from something like Battle of the Bands. its funny & they are great singers that kind of mock worship the Beatles/Beach Boys (almost like Nilsson in that way).

i love the theme too. this is classic Zappa-style band theme. later on in the 80s they would do music for Care Bears and w their sillier trippier material you can kind of see how they were the perfect band for that.

Thank you for reminding me that I need to have a Flo and Eddie phase.

I only somewhat recently learned that they dis the backing vocals on Poison Heart by the Ramones.

Love the Turtles, Howard Kaylan is a genius singer, but the spectre of Zappa has kept me far far way from Flo and Eddie records thus far.

If you love The Turtlas you should check out the first two F&E records for sure. No Zappa-ness, or even much quirkiness, at all. Just well-crafted, vaguely psych-y pop/rock.

yeah I hate Zappa, really the only part of their catalog I haven't explored is their Zappa-affiliated stuff

Οὖτις, Thursday, 26 July 2018 20:12 (seven years ago)

It's also the fact that they were so closely involved with, intrinsic to in fact, one of Zappa's worst periods.

yeah 200 Motels was my intro to the Flo and Eddie years. "Mystery Roach" is a fucking jam.

First Zappa I ever owned was a promo single of "Magic Fingers," retrieved from a local radio station's waste basket. How my parents never noticed those lyrics emanating from my bedroom stereo is amazing.
