The best punk song I've heard recently...

... is "Snowball" by Jimmy Fallon.

Since I'm sure that everyone else on ILM who's heard it loathes it with unbridled fury and feels it pisses on everything that makes punk holy, I'd like for you to explain to me why you think it sucks, because frankly it FUCKING ROCKS in a manner that wispy ol' Avril could only dream about.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna say it was something by the FM Knives.

mosurock (mosurock), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

..."pisses on", huh? Kind of apt for a song from an album called The Bathroom Wall.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

the question is Dan, would you make out with Jimmy Fallon?

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

No Chris, I would not.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

piss and snow is sooo overdone.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

your question is flawed from the get go since you compare the Fallon "comedy" song to Avril Lavigne as if Avril Lavigne was punk.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

FM Knives is an excellent choice, particularly "Down the Street."

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

anything by charm city suicides...

marcg (marcg), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I compare the reality of the Fallon song to what some people seem to think Avril Lavigne is. How is that invalidating my question?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Assfactor 4, "Sometimes I Suck"

OR

Lungfish, "Open House"

Ian Johnson, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Kill-A-Watts - "Treat Me Like A Jerk"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

you might wanna make it clear that you're talking about "punk" and not punk...before the ghost of H.R. rises and smacks the snot from thine nose

ps. H.R. is not dead

nat law, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

If Jimmy Fallon is Punk, then Sum-41 is positively NO WAVE.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Well okay, I'm not saying that Jimmy Fallon could take out Bad Brains or anything, but what I'm saying is the ferocity and energy of "Snowball" is more akin to GBH or Tupelo Chain Sex than anything I've heard by Sum-41, Blink 182, The Offspring, etc.

If Black Flag can have one of their signature songs be about having their friends over to watch TV, why isn't Fallon's rant about a snowball fight a valid punk song?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

So who is Jimmy Fallon anyway?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

He's a Saturday Night Live cast member. Think Adam Sandler without the speech impediment, only more sarcastic.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

"If Black Flag can have one of their signature songs be about having their friends over to watch TV, why isn't Fallon's rant about a snowball fight a valid punk song?"

Because Jimmy Fallon's a fucking comedian (and an overrated one at that) and Black Flag were a legitimate Punk Band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Jimmy Fallon makes Howie Mandell look like Bill Hicks.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

If Howie Mandell is Bill Hicks then Gilbert Gottfried is Lenny Bruce.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you heard the song, Alex? How about you, DB?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I saw him play it on MTV's TRL (not that I make a habit of watching said show, mind). It's a fun little throwaway thing, but I don't find it especially any "Punker" than the other bands you mentioned (altho', yes.....it's significantly Punker than not-really-Punk-in-any-possible-way-other-than-sartorial Avril).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I've unfortunately heard the song and seen the video all in one stinky swoop. The "Snowball" video is easily the worst thing on MTV today. Yeah, it's amateur. But all shit don't float.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks Alex, that was really my point (although I disagree as far as Sum-41 is concerned as those guys are wimpy mcwimps). I haven't seen the video (unless you're talking about the TRL thing), but I wouldn't call the song "amateur". And you're right that not all shit floats, but the crucial difference is that I don't think this song is shit. It's light-years more engaging than Andrew WK, for example, simply because rather than overearnestly trying to be fun, it just IS fun.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i just dont think its funny, entertaining or a good song in general. it has nothing to do with my thoughts on whats 'punk' or whop its by.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

EVERYONE ON ILM HATES FUN, PROVED BY SCIENCE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

He's a Saturday Night Live cast member. Think Adam Sandler without the speech impediment, only more sarcastic.

So tightened and twisted rather than relaxed, but still an asshole?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope the song is as good as you say. Jimmy Fallon is a genuinely talented guy who's being told his inability to keep a straight face and his dopey Sandler-like aw-shucks demeanor are as noteworthy as his actual jokes (I still think his perfomance in Almost Famous, his least hey-I'm-Jimmy-Fallon! deal, was his best). "Idiot Boyfriend" had some nice moments, even if it devolved into weak zeitgeist prods (did he think it was funny just to say the word SUV?).

I don't like the idea that the best punk is the most ferocious stuff (GBH and Tupelo Chain Sex?). But then we're getting into superword shit all over again.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, that was how punk was introduced to me (which may explain why I have so much disdain for The Sex Pistols).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

DAN I LOVE FUN AND JIMMY FALLON. But Idiot Boyfriend is BY FAR the better song here. It is the song that was written for me, to describe everyone I've ever dated. THe part about how he's going to make his girlfriend watch romantic movies, "you know, something like...hmmm. Something like The Matrix" is easily the greatest lyric ever written by anyone in the history of mankind.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

it's not bad, but I prefer Fred Durst noting in "Livin' It Up" that he's seen Fight Club "about 28 times."

The song also starts "this is dedicated to you ben stiller...you are my favorite mother fucker...i told you!"

Game, set, match. My fave part of idiot boyfriend is about honking the horn.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:13 (twenty-three years ago)

He can see Fight Club about 400 times, and he's still not going to be singing "I got a Swanson's Dinner wit' yo' NAME on it...yeah...."

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

what about this snippet from shoulda-been-single "Livin' It Up": Who's the starsucker? I'm the starfish, you silly mother fucker
puff puff give, the marijuana cig oops,
i don't even smoke, but i love the way it smells
here's a toast to the females,
sippin' mums champagne from a seashell

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

All the poetry of John Grisham, that. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Beck's "Debra" is far more humourous than "Idiot Boyfriend"
