I cannot believe no one has mentioned the Bonzos/Innes/Stanshall yet.

Mention them, mention them. Who are they?

More comedy,

You're right Marcello, I admit you know something I do not. And I apologize to everyone for misusing this forum to try to gain information about music unknown to me. From now on I will post questions about music to I Love Football.

Paula G., Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

John Cooper Clarke - Disguise In Love

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Paula! Come back! Bonzo Dog Band was this dorky little group of guys who were kinda like a pre-punk They Might Be Giants Orchestra and one of them became the cutest Rutle (in my opinion) (Rutles were one of the 5 best Beatles rip-off bands and better than the Beatles after Pepper sorta kinda). The best Bonzo Dog Band joke I heard was the one with all the famous people being introduced on their track including the Yo La Tengo quoted "and Adolf Hitler on keyboards!" followed by bit of keyboard noodlin'.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

28. King Kong - Kingdom of Kong

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Marcello, I have a feeling that the Bonzos aren't really as well-known as they probably should be over on this side of the Atlantic, for whatever reason...not sure why that would be. I do know that for the longest time I had absolutely no clue who Neil Innes was even though I knew his work with Python, and separately with the Rutles, even though I'd seen a copy of Off The Record in a friend's collection at some point. I guess it's sort of the same thing with Peter Sellers' records; recently I went into several stores and asked for the Sellers box set, and they said "DVD or VHS?"; it did not even occur to them that he had ever recorded albums. (Then again, I suppose a fair number of people have no clue that Newhart ever had a recording career...)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

'"and Adolf Hitler on keyboards!" followed by bit of keyboard noodlin'.'

I'm sold.

Thank you Anthony, explainer of mysteries. Now what about this "grebt" I keep reading about...

Paula G., Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

the Bonzos are indeed great! But they're beyond obscure in the States. I don't find this surprising, they're schtick is profoundly British (just like Sellers). Really funny, well-executed psych-goofs - much much better (and funnier) than Zappa's pisstakes. Search: "Can Blue Men Sing the Whites", the Paul McCartney produced "I'm the Urban Spaceman", many others...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

29. Bruce McCullough - Shame Based Man
30. Rusty Warren - Knockers Up
41. Katie Lee - Songs of Couch and Consultation

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

What are the criteria here? Does King Uszniewicz and his Uszniewicztones count?

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

43. Brute Force - I, Brute Force : Confections of Love

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know King Uszniewicz and his Uszniewicztones but what a fantastic name. They count if you say so, but do they really have enough records to fill up slots 31 - 40 ?

Paula G., Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

oops. Make that :
31., 32., and 33. :)

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

'"and Adolf Hitler on keyboards!" followed by bit of keyboard noodlin'.'

Great line and often quoted on MST3K...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

44. Pavement - S&E
45. Hampton Grease Band - Music To Eat (err, marketed as comedy)
46. Weird Al - Bad Hair Day??? Surely all of his are this formula

Fivvy, Thursday, 16 January 2003 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually the formula is supposed to be great music + comedy, so Weird Al may or may not count. The real title of this is Best Music Records That Are Funny, but the person who created the thread mistitled it thinking to get people from the 101 Comedy Records thread talking about music they're into. She failed. Anyway,

47. Dead Milkmen - Bucky Fellini
48. Butthole Surfers - Brown Reason To Live
49. Ween - Chocolate and Cheese
50. Alkoholiks - 21 and Over

and some more rap I'm forgetting

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 16 January 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Yo!! The numbering is off.

44. The very best of Stan Freberg.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 16 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

speaking of The Rutles: "I Must Be In Love" in good-enough-to-be-on-A Hard Day's Night shocker!

(even though it cops some later-era elements)
