Classic

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Neither. I quite liked them, but they were kind of one-trick ponies, and they weren't going to change anyone's world. But that didn't stop them from being a fine garage-pop group.

kate, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah i love tham. the singers voice is sexy and they make me wanna dance.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

not exactly claasic, but v decent. Very good live, obviously. When I went to see them c98 they opened with a song complaining about the high ticket price to get in!

Robin Goad (rgoad), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i really liked the make-up they had that whole 60's garage beat look and sound before it became realllllllllly popular. Plus the nation of ullyses (sp) were great so def classic (oh and they had the free Arthur Lee tune so def def classic)

james (james), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I co-wrote & produced Ian's David Candy album - great fun. He really knows his stuff & is genuinely enthusiastic in a way which maybe (wrongly) came across as aggressive in The Makeup.

Jez (Jez), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:44 (twenty-three years ago)

More classic than dud. Born On The Floor is a killer track.

Mil, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

terrible: a 3rd rate dooors people!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

C to the max.

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, more classic than dud. I believe Ian means it, but I would always enjoy his vocals regardless. Even if it was an act, it's still a great one.

He's the Daniel Day Lewis of Gospel-punk!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

classic. alot of release that start to sound the same but live at cold rice is amazing as well as all the singles. plus, probably one of the most influential bands on rock in the last 10 years. bands like the international noise conspiracy are just cheap makeup/nation of ulysses rip offs. when i heard 'the first conspiracy' or whatever that album is called, i almost laughed at the faux-ian svervonious vocals and song writing style - exactly like the make up if they had never found minor chords (not to mention the similarity of a funny/fake political aesthetic too!). i suppose the Internation Noise Conspiracy changed quite a bit after that record but i have a feeling most big name rock bands owe alot to nation of ulysses and the make up.

Duddier than dud--have seen them twice (both times opening for bands I wanted to see), and both times found them to be exactly like what would happen if the JSBX got everything totally wrong.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

You just described the Delta '72--but that's a whole other thread, I suppose...

I liked the Make-Up while they were around, but the band's records don't hold up well a few years later. Some of their songs are still good, but the albums are pretty tough to sit through. Even their best ones, In Mass Mind and Destination Love, were good for a while after they came out but then sounded dated--even while the band was still together.

I always assumed that was because the band put too much emphasis on style over substance, and because they were constantly tweaking their sound. Each time I saw them they would play new material that wasn't on any the latest record (I liked this, actually. At least until their new material started getting really bad, that is.)

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

strike that 'any' from the last sentence.

And I agree with the others who said neither classic nor dud.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I still love "Destination Love" but I need to hear the other stuff more now to say for sure. I really dug "Walking On The Dunes" too. "Here Comes The Judge" is probably my fave track. Personally, I thinks its priceless that their career ended with a cover of "Hey Joe."

What little I've heard of Weird War totally sucked. But really, I can't imagine what Ian really has to do now.

Also, Refused and International Noise Conspiracy are like the professional versions of his two old bands. Not as memorable, but they suck some of the zeitgeist away from him.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Ian's chest hair? Classic. Ian's band? Dud.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Some never loved Elvis. I never loved Ian.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

He is sorta like Guy Picciotto and Jon Spencer's sick little love child.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, well, I hate Jon Spencer, so all is clear! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I fucking love Ian, especially in a shit hole of a club.

maria b (maria b), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

*struggling to say something positive about.. oh yeah* At best, they sounded like a weak version of early Can.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 02:16 (fourteen years ago)

They're just such different things in so many ways that it seems weird to put them against each other like that.
I just can't imagine a frontman like Spiv emerging these days.
