Selling shit at MVE ordeal

Everyone knows you're not going to get rich (or even dope money) by selling old shit at MVE, it's more a house-cleaning thing, but do they have to EVERY SINGLE FUCKIN' TIME put on that solemn look and say "Can't see us selling this in a hurry, not much demand I'm afraid - 50p cash £1 trade" no matter what it is! They don't even look! Lost Robert Johnson 78s, Mongolia-only outtakes, 10 more copies of 'No Parlez', it's all the same to them! I accept I'm going to get ripped off but why the 'concerned face'+'this is crap' SPEECH? Just gimme the meagre amount of money and shut up!

dave q, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

OK I used to work there but I got fired, I think for not being enough of a Camden indiepop gaywad

dave q, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus Dave do you want to take away their only source of joy?

"Penny each mate."

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

just out of interest, what did you try to flog to them?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dave q, i agree with you that the camden mve is shite. been there once to sell a few cds and they did the concerned face to me, as if i was a pleb asking them to spare my child's life. i immediately laughed at them and mocked their concerned attitude.

my favourite quote was: can't take this because we only buy obscure cds.

me: what? like this copy of the hives yer favourite new band? bahahaha.

evil evil people at camden mve. as i left, the concerned girl shouted out arsehole at me. people - time to fight back against condescending record clerks!

doom-e, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Ebay. Ebay. Ebay Ebay. Is that a bad word on here or something? It seems that there is deinitely some sort of taboo surrounding it.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone actually tried to sell 'No Parlez' on eBay?

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm just too lazy for e-bay. i wait until i visit my in-laws in norwich and then i sell my promo cds, there. get better prices as well.

doom-e, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

uh, aren't mve supposed to buy everything you offer them, even if they only offer you a penny each, unless what you're trying to flog is a bootleg or things which the premises are chock-full of, i.e. unsold no parlez/into the gap/shoulder of giants?

i occasionally do spring cleans of my collection but usually take 'em down to mve in berwick street - never had any problems with the staff there and i usually get a fair price.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Unless Br1an's whole philosophy of selling has changed they have to offer you money EVEN FOR NO PARLEZ!

Most irritating and all-too-common staff-customer exchange -

"We can only offer a penny each for these."

"But it says you buy everything!"

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I can be your ebay seller, doom!

I'm telling you, I make almost a second living (equivalant to an average pay part time job) on Ebay. And I don't rip people off.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i never sell records or cds...although i have given some away. id rather they go to a friend

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i have added problems, Marcello, try being North American and selling stuff in a bad camden hipster shop!! Ugh! I can't say anymore on this thread. I retreat to the provinces when trying to sell stuff. I rather come in with a bag of 100 cds then show up with a concerned record shit going through it and looking sadly at me whilst going through - offering crap money and then selling it at 150 percent mark up!

Would you want to sell stuff for me on Ebay, Nordic? How would that work out? Are there really people wanting to purchase the new Space single? The new Stephen Jones solo album?

doom-e, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i gave stuff away as well, gareth - but you can only give away so much datsuns shit before yer friends turn into enemies!

doom-e, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Doom-E for promos of horrible bands go to the big Notting Hill branch I'd advise - they have lots more display space than Camden and are entirely rock-based so they're not so picky.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

the bargain basement at notting hill mve remains something of a sociological barometer. lots of unsold gary glitter, a jonathan king double greatest hits album which i can never remember not being there, a sudden influx of r kelly stuff last year. does that mean anyone looking for cds by the who at rock bottom prices should go there next week?

what sort of prices do avid records in oxford offer? their prices are way cheaper than those of mve, so i'd imagine it'd be a lot less.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The Space single will go, I guarantee it. Is it out yet? Excuse my ignorance on this matter.

Re:sellers. I was kind of joking, but they do now have a thing where after you get a certain rating you can list and sell for other people on commission. I don't know that I could handle the responsibility, though.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, believe or not, tom, i've been saying no to so many publicists, that they are not sending me as much stuff as before. it was getting crazy, though, i was averaging 25 cds a week....in the summertime.

marcello, the provinces, give more in terms of trade and accept more. i came out of a norwich record shop with the entire felt back catalogue after selling 40 promo cds. Definitely worth it!!!

doom-e, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

i just cant bring myself to do it - sell records - in the back of my mind i always have a hoarder instinct in case i ever need to sample and kingmaker beat or a blind melon vocal (haha i was young and foolish goddamnit) so i hold on to them all. def storage problems but i find old albums/12"'s make such good support ballast for my more precious gems

james (james), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i have never once left the manchester vinyl exchange
after selling something with less than 25-30 quid in my pocket.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...and the staff are dead nice.
well whaddya know ?
it's london vs. manchester round 14, and
the northerners win again !

who'd have thought ?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

vinyl exchange is the best record shop in the country. i love mcr!

i came out of there with 14 albums for £30, 4 weren't even released yet

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth is bang OTM.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Brum MVE gave me £3 for a Bill Hicks video that only cost a fiver...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I've found a much better place to take my books now. Took in some nice deletions to MVE in Notting Hill and made the person who was buying look in Record Collector when I received a low bid; found they were off by £20. Fortunately I knew the buyer so it wasn't quite as embarrassing as it could have been.

Recommendation: rare stuff to Notting Hill, INDIE to Camden and dancey stuff to Berwick Street. Or take all your stuff to Reckless FIRST and what they won't have, bring to Berwick street MVE.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

amazon marketplace is the place to get decent money for newish records, although they;re sometimes but not always dodgy about promos. you can get £6-£9 easy.

carrie, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Record Collector artificially inflates prices by taking a maximum price not a mean - generally the ppl working in a shop know what sells for what *in that shop* - I'd guess Suzy that it's only because you knew the buyer that they indulged yr request in the first place. The thing to remember about MVE is that all the staff hate the owner with a passion and that they don't make any kind of commission on sales - they have no motive whatsoever for ripping people off (personal dislike aside of course) and tend to offer prices based on their depressingly accurate perception of their tight-fisted clientele.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

''i occasionally do spring cleans of my collection but usually take 'em down to mve in berwick street - never had any problems with the staff there and i usually get a fair price.''

yes, the prices are OK (though its very easy to rant abt it).

we should do a last five records you sold thread. it would be fun: ''how could you sell x! that's a classic that''.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you mean something like this, Julio?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom-ya should have put this up-

http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?GetResult&query=no+parlez&sr=n&from=R8&ht=1&combine=y&st=2&SortProperty=MetaEndSort

see? Someone bought one!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

''Do you mean something like this, Julio?''

heh, yes i had completely forgotten (and i had contributed to it!). wonder why it never took off (surely most of us do get rif of CDs).

billy- BTW, did you send me email a long time ago? and if you did, did you get a reply.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

are reckless and mve really the best places to sell stuff in london? yeep. sold a bunch of (mostly fairly reasonable and saleable) stuff in reckless last feb and got about a quid or maybe slightly more each, which is about what i'd get round here. i was expecting to get a lot more, considering most of their cds cost 8.99 and recently released hyped stuff is a tenner (and that's mostly indie stuff i could get online brand new for barely any more than that).

mind you, maybe i'm mistaken since i don't sell stuff at avid much any more because they never seem very pleased to see the kind of stuff i bring along (don't blame them). still in oxford, polar bear usually give me a bit more, as you'd expect since their used stock is also slightly more expensive. vinyl vaults in cheltenham gave me more than most other places i've tried last time but i think they're fairly picky about what they take in and when they take it.

see, this kind of thing is what i wanted people to tell me on my ile thread (that and whether any recycling schemes can do anything with crap scratched cds). maybe i should've got over my fear of starting a thread on this side of the tracks. ok, actually i should just learn to write as enticingly as dave q.

serf, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Years ago, i took my entire CD collection to Reckless when i was in LoNdOn for a day. They gave me a pretty gud price i must confess - better that the used rekkid shop i was working in @ the time! I bought a synthesiser w/the money.....

my main memory of radio/press folx coming into thee used rekkid shop was that they'd always have 4 - 10 tasty high price promo items, and another 256 CDs which were TOTAL SHIT and TOTALLY UNSAL3ABL3 AT anY PRICE. If you wanted the good stuff, u'd have to buy the shit. Man, i am gl4d I don't w3rk there anymore.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr Fay is absolutely right. When I'm dropping off an especially steaming pile of crap at MVE, there are always some choice things in the pile to 'divert' attention from the drivel. And I do know both parties are aware of the drivel, so I suppose the good stuff is there to embarrass me that little bit less.

BEST MVE trick ever was done by an ex-employee, now deceased, who pulled off this scam when I was working there as a buyer. Got friend to call up Deletions and ask about some Depeche Mode promo candles in a German voice, and to say that he'd pay £150 for each of them (imagine bodega candles done up DepMode) if any were available. Of course two hours later the first guy comes in with FIVE of these candles and they have to give him £75 each for them in anticipation of nonexistant German.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 January 2003 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Also Tom sometimes the Record Collector is OK for MVE; the person buying from me REALLY fucked up her bid because of the Mogwai I was selling being worth a lot and her not realising it. Also good for unfamiliar genres and if it causes an offer to go over the odds, GOOD. Money better in hands of rock hack waiting for cheques to arrive rather than in hands of insane disciple of Arthur 'Primal Scream' Janov who makes far too much money off of miserable staff.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 January 2003 09:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah - what I was trying to sell was a Sheila E picture disc

dave q, Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

ha! i would have bought that from you.

doom-e, Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't get the wrong idea, it was great and everything, I just didn't have a turnbtable at the time

dave q, Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, but for how much?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

five quid, obviously.
?

doom-e, Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

re ebay you'd all be surprised, i think it's worth the effort. of course the trick is knowing when to sell the valuable things (he sez eyeing his TWO bola 'shapes' sets)

zemko (bob), Thursday, 16 January 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio. Yes and yes!

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 16 January 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
Arguments for and against Ebay a lot of stuff you used to love, but now never listen to, in order to pay the rent, stop eating cardboard and gravel, etc.

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ebaying"
