Lindsey Buckingham's sangs are ridiculous< Stevie Nicks' are sort of annoyingly mystical. I sense that Christine is the best songwriter of the bunch, yet she seems to get the least exposure. We see that gollum-like drummer more. Maybe she is embarrased to be associated with him.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I always liked her too, particularly her voice -- warm, sexy, Linda Thompsonesque. But Stevie still blows her to bits.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

"Little Lies" is still my favorite Fleetwood Mac single.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I like all the Christine tracks from the self-titled Fleetwood Mac album.

"...and if I needed whiskey, he could serve it to me neat."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Hanle y, the reason Buckingham is so revered (in my house, anyway) is BECAUSE his songs are so ridiculous! He's 2nd on my list, though, behind McVie, mostly because of Jody's reasons.

Lindsay Buckingham's "Holiday Road" may be one of the greatest songs of all time, and I'll stand on Stevie Nicks' coffee table in my Birkenstocks and shout it.

Not only is "Little Lies" my favorite Fleetwood song, "Everywhere" is my second favorite.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck no! Buckingham and Nicks made that goddamn group! "Little Lies" is at this point, the ONLY song I like by McVie. She's way too boring. Stevie's and Lindsey's eccentricity is what makes Fleetwood Mac one of the few '70s LA groups I can handle. Plus McVie's voice is too restrained. I dig Stevie's nuttiness (just recently been getting into her weird dance tracks on the solo album Rock A Little). And Lindsay ruuuuns on the double because he's in trouble!

Gold Dust Woman! Rhiannon! Silver Spring! Go Your Own Way! That news song that starts Rumours that goes b'gow b'gow b'gow... How can we deny ourselves these pleasures just for "You Make Loving Fun (not that you can hear it in my voice)"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I couldn't choose a favourite from those three, but it seems that my favourite FM songs are mostly Stevie's..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I doubt any of their albums would be as good without the toggling between all three songwriters.

"'Little Lies' is still my favorite Fleetwood Mac single."

gygax!, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Looking out for love is pretty enjoyable from a "fun" perspective I supose. I am trying to buy Christine's eighties solo album so I can say to everyone " Oh, yeah thats what I've been listening to lately.
I didnt realize Lindsey wrote HOliday road.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer Christine to Stevie. "You Make Loving Fun" is great, so is "Say That You Love Me" and "Over My Head". Very warm, mellow voice; another underrated one in that vein is Jane Relf.

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 16 January 2003 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I like how Nicks and Buckingham seemed to have a real influence on McVie, in that her early stuff (eg. "Tell Me That You Love Me" and even "You Make Loving Fun") were comparatively rootsy but "Little Lies" and "Everywhere" are, for simple pop songs, incredibly mystical and ethereal sounding. I really love those last two actually.

But no, she is in no way as good as Nicks I'm afraid ("Dreams", "Sara" and "Gypsy" are some of the greatest songs e-vahhhhh!!!!).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 January 2003 05:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim! You're back!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Christine all the way. "Did You Ever Love Me," "Little Lies," "Over and Over," "Songbird," "Say You Love Me"... and at this point I think we have to admit that "Don't Stop" is unruinable... Plus: seek out her solo version of "I'd Rather Go Blind" from ca. 1970.

Most non-intuitive great sequencing decision ever: opening _Tusk_ with "Over and Over."

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 16 January 2003 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Is "I'd Rather Go Blind" from the Legendary Christine Perfect Album, Douglas? I've always wanted to hear that. Shame she changed her name.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 16 January 2003 07:33 (twenty-three years ago)

say that you love me is choice... but i still prefer buckingham and nicks.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 16 January 2003 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

But those Tango In The Night songs came out at the height of the mullet/horrible 85-87 drum sound era. 'Everywhere' and 'Little Lies' would sound much better with a 90's production I think, as would some of Lindsey's songs from that album like 'Caroline'. I saw them on the Tango tour in 88 when they had those ridiculous Bob Seger Band members in as replacements for Buckingham. That really was the end!! Buckingham's songs on Tuck are really underrated though -- he reached his peak then with those mini epics like 'Save Me A Place' and 'That's All For Everyone'. When I first heard these albums in my mid teens I was more attached to McVie's songs but from then on it ws the California axis which won out.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 January 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

No, not the Buckingham Nicks record (although I've got that on mp3 if you like), I mean the first Mac album with Buckingham & Nicks.

Please tell me that changes your answer, Dan!

(BTW, I say that "Hold Me" cuts "Little Lies" any frickin' day of the week)

"Hold Me" is my #1 all-time favorite song of all time.

I swear to god. I mean, that's it. I've heard probably 10,000 albums and then some at this point. But THAT song. It's arrangement, production, performance ... nothing has stopped me in my tracks, compelled repeated re-listenings, enraptured me ... nothing has bewitched me like that damn "Hold Me". The funny thing is Christine didn't even write it entirely; some LA-lifer named Robbie Patton helped her. Whatever. I love her voice too. So so good.

Also she apparently has a new solo album coming out in June!! I read this on some other message board! ILM is behind!

Nowell, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It's true, Linda Thompson's voice mixed w/ (oddly) KD Lang, or something. Christine's definitely underrappreciated.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

nowell - "go your own way" isn't a christine mcvie song. it's a lindsey buckingham song. (which doesn't answer your question; i don't know that cover.)

What a weird thread...unless I missed something it's as if she joined the band in 1975 or something. Her only real flaw is her consistancy.

She's definitely playing the handful of synth parts on the 1975 album and Rumours, probably played less of the programmed stuff by the time of Tango.

Steve Winwood on FB:

“Christine was a lovely lady. I knew her briefly in the early days of the blues and folk scene in Birmingham, then later in the mid 80s when she lived in L.A., and shortly after I was lucky and privileged to play on one of her solo albums.

She had a beautiful alto voice that had elements of blues and church choral music, which in many ways set her apart from some of her melismatic contemporaries. Her beautiful, syllabic style was a joy to listen to. Together with her engaging, heartfelt songs she will be greatly missed. R.I.P. Christine” - SW

an icon of a worried-looking, long-haired, bespectacled man (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 1 December 2022 21:46 (three years ago)

...some of her melismatic contemporaries OTM. Listening to the Christine Perfect album yesterday for the first time in a long time, it struck me that while she was of the British blues boom, she's never exactly emulating Etta James or Tina Turner on the songs of theirs she covered. She replaced the overemoting of many of her contemporaries with a sort of "coolness" that served her well as Mac became a pop band.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 1 December 2022 22:13 (three years ago)

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 December 2022 22:17 (three years ago)

There are definitely some good tracks on Chicken Shack's "Blue Horizon Sessions" collection.

I've always thought Christine's take on "I'd Rather Go Blind" was very beautiful and definitely shows the laid back coolness of the delivery. I got to think she liked some Dusty Springfield and maybe in a different set of circumstances, you could see some US label signing her like they did Rod Stewart out of that scene.

Lindsey has now posted a handwritten message:

Christine McVie’s sudden passing is profoundly heartbreaking. Not only were she and I part of the magical family of Fleetwood Mac, to me Christine was a musical comrade, a friend, a soul mate, a sister. For over four decades, we helped each other create a beautiful body of work and a lasting legacy that continues to resonate today. I feel very lucky to have known her. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit will live on through that body of work and that legacy.

There's a picture in that LA Times article of Christine onstage in 1977 playing a tom-tom, what song could they be performing?

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 2 December 2022 01:29 (three years ago)

That's a good question. Supposedly Atlanta GA, 1977. She would step out front for World Turning, but usually with maracas.... for the jam sesh portion Mick would come out with a talking drum or whatever so that's my first guess- an unusual jam part of World Turning.

My only other guess is it could be a proto Sisters of the Moon.... what? I looked for some more pictures of this show by the same photographer, and one of the results is a shot of Lindsey with short hair and no beard, playing a Les Paul. He went with his new look when they started Tusk in 78, but stopped playing Les Pauls by 79, IIRC. Assuming the city is correct this could be from 8/29/78. Sisters is the only new song in that setlist and it is a song that Stevie holds a cowbell for. Maybe C hadn't worked out her part yet?

majorairbro, Friday, 2 December 2022 05:17 (three years ago)

the 16 songs she takes lead vocal on (15 of which she wrote) from their 1971-1974 period would make a classic double LP.

probably someone more knowledgeable than me might know this: how often did the band revisit those tracks after buckingham/nicks arrived? so many of those tracks could have fit in beautifully on the s/t or rumours or tusk. it remains sort of a lost era (for the entire band, really.)

omar little, Friday, 2 December 2022 21:14 (three years ago)

There are live takes of "Why", "Spare Me A Little of Your Love" and "Station Man" (among other early tracks) on the deluxe S/T album box, but I think the Christine stuff from that era didn't last much longer as concert material once Rumours came along.

Yeah, Soto otm re: Mick's gifts. And John, he's pretty great, too, of course; iirc Mike Mills had a "what would John McVie do?" maxim. I think in their case as a rhythm section, it could be the result of all those formative years woodshedding, which helps them swing and shuffle through stuff like "Over My Head."

I can confirm also reading an interview mention of the Mills McVie maxim.

It’s Only Her Factory, Girl! (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 29 March 2023 00:12 (three years ago)

I missed this good bit from the L.A. Times obit:

Her grounding presence was a welcome contrast to Nicks’ nymph-like persona, not because it positioned the two against each other, but because it offered two very powerful frameworks for womanhood and female friendship within the same chart-topping band. The idea that women must choose — that one is either a Christine or a Stevie — is an outmoded and reductive binary in the year 2022. Instead, the fruitful pairing of McVie and Nicks, how their writing and personalities elegantly commingle and reflect back on one another, offers an antidote to the notion that women can be only one thing.

“Think About Me” is such an underrated song, one of the best examples of the deceptive lightness that Christine often brings to the table.

More broadly I think she’s clearly the MVP on Tusk - the only songwriter on the album who doesn’t miss her target even once.

In the context of Fleetwood Mac -- its rhythm section, Buckingham's production know-how, Nicks' weirdness -- McVie didn't need ambition, man.

Maybe it reflects that I came to this album two decades after its release and I'm totally wrong about this, but I've always heard the above song as being an in-character performance of the lies we tell ourselves and others when we are trapped in emotionally abusive / dependent relationships.

(assuming that's correct) I can't think of many prior precedents for that off-hand (maybe "As Long As He Needs Me" from Oliver), and I'd certainly not call it banal.

Tim F, Friday, 19 July 2024 01:34 (one year ago)

i.e. it tackles implicitly the issues which "Little Lies" later rendered explicit.

Tim F, Friday, 19 July 2024 01:35 (one year ago)

McVie didn't need ambition

So her weakest songs are likely to be boring instead of eccentrically manic or self-absorbedly brooding.

I've always heard the above song as being an in-character performance of the lies we tell ourselves and others when we are trapped in emotionally abusive / dependent relationships.

OK, but this is the theme of almost half of McVie's catalog - even the quote from "Think About Me" that started this revive is a lot more poignant. It's hard to invest if I find the melody uninteresting.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 19 July 2024 03:14 (one year ago)

Brilliantly sequenced, though. Maybe I wouldn't have liked it much on Rumours... but maybe i would've, Lindsey's arrangement is flattering. But those two minutes of sweet Christine softness between the Peter Green fade-out on their eeriest song and another dose of manic Lindsey: perfect!
