Arto Lindsay: C.O.D.?

I've been listening to "Prize" all day so the question popped up of its own accord. I think it's a perfect record for an almost-summer night.

I'm always meaning to get one of his albums but never get round to it. All I've heard is "Blue eye shadow" and "O nome dela". It is lovely summer music allright and despite his avant-garde credentials his music is very accesible.

Given that I know of Arto Lindsay's work via his noise-mongering, Sonic-Youth-inspiring, guitar-mangling (with DNA, and his solo stuff prior to his exploration of Brazilian textures), I can't say that folks of his latter ouevre (which, I confess, I haven't actually heard) would be too interested.

But, damn, the DNA Live CD (available via Avant Records in Japan) is quite the squall. Sounds like 3-year-olds trying to play free jazz. I like it much. If you're interested in similar sounding stuff, there's Aggregates 1-24 (on Knitting Factory Records, I believe).

He's teamed with members of the Rollins Band (Melvin Gibbs) and the Lounge Lizards (Dougie Bowne), and pretty much fucks with the same shit he fucked with during his DNA days. Pretentious simile - imagine the Minutemen trying to describe Francis Bacon paintings via song.

I'm guessing the 4 DNA tracks on No New York would be work a looksee, too. If you're willing to drop $38 US on the recent Japanese re-release, that is.

However (checking Arto's discography on CDNOW), there do seem to be various off-shoots that might differ from both his noisy beginnings & his current laid-back stance. Someone here can offer more quality info on this topic, yes?

...work a looksee?

Try WORTH. My bad.

When I was in Japan the previous time, I saw this for sale. I nearly collapsed. Having never imagined to come across a copy, now seeing it on CD! Woohaaa! I of course bought a copy. A guy emailed me saying that the Japanese release is a bootleg.

twenty-one years pass...

so is it true that virtually none of his solo records are in print? or being streamed anywhere?

evil Spotify has some 2014 thing called Encyclopedia of Arto and 2017 Cuidado Madame

And that's it, right? That's what my friend was saying, that he went into his storage to find his Arto stuff, and when he couldn't, was dismayed that's all there was streaming. Those two on Spotify, the same two on Soundcloud and on Amazon, etc. Stuff like "Mundo Civilizado" and "Noon Chill" is just generally MIA.

Those others are not on Bandcamp either

Cool, also re Charivari, thanks! There must be more on youtube, or somewhere, incl. Ambitious Lovers and DNA, maybe early Lounge Lizards gigs (from around the time of their live ROIR tape), .also ones he's produced by other artists.
Was hoping I'd blogged more about him, but other than "Grain By Grain" in a singles/tracks list, this seems to be it---following a brief allusion---from 2014, one of the xpost two on Spotify:

Speaking of Arto, that double-disc studio/live anthology Encyclopedia of Arto was out this year, wasn't it? Loved the live, but the studio set could've have been better chosen: most of the tracks they or he picked were way too overcooked or something.

The live disc seems off-handedly awesome! It's mainly guitar.
Also some excellent live DNA tracks on Downtown 81 soundtrack, as xgau says:
The secretly funky avant-noise trio DNA sound more muscular on this "Blonde Redhead" and "Detached" than on the 2004 CD believed to contain all their recorded works.
And sounds like he's in there.

Mind you, I'm partial to his wilder stuff, maybe too much so.

i still laugh at the time i heard a dj on the 5 PM traffic rush play his cover of "erotic city" - clearly an arto fan but not a prince fan.
