Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation: Classic Or Dud?

I'm listening to "Angel". It's aged much better than I would have thought. "Rag Doll" is great too. Was this actually any good? I still remember "Magic Touch" and the title track. "Dude Looks Like a Lady" was probably a little lame though.

Also, is anyone willing to defend anything later than this?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

"Jaded" is great.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Eeeek. Awful stuff. "Rag Doll" is alright, I suppose, the the rest of it is dud, dud and thrice dud.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll second jaded (phew, another person likes it...)

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

"Jaded" isn't on PERMANENT VACATION, gents.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Permanent Vacation was the last entirely great Aerosmith record (and actually, it was first entirely great Aerosmith record since Rocks). The only track that might be out of place is the Beatles cover, "I'm Down."

I'll defend two or three tracks on Nine Lives, but I can't even remember their names now.

"Jaded" may as well be a Shania Twain song.

sub-thread on post-PERMANENT VACATION Aerosmith:
- "Jaded" is indeed crap. Sorry, guys.
- "Eat the Rich" had a great riff, despite the inherent ridiculousness of Aerosmith decrying rich people (they themselves are stupidly rich,....duh!)
- "Livin' on the Edge" is *UTTER* shit.
- "Janie's Got a Gun" is actually quite great, not least because it doesn't sound a thing like Aerosmith.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

All the Alicia Silverstone singles ("Cryin'", "Crazy" and....uhhhh...."Amazing") are all completely, utterly, irrefutably SHIT, almost erasing any merit the band earned with stuff like "Back in the Saddle" and "Mamma Kin."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

"Janie's Got A Gun" is better than "Jaded", but "Jaded" is still great. "Pink" is all right; I wouldn't change the channel if it came on the radio.

"I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" is pure horseshit.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "Rag Doll". How about "Tell Me What It Takes", was that on Permanent Vacation or the next one? That was a good one.

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i will listen to young lust and set you all straight about this...argh, no, i don't think i could stomach it. janie and jaded (as a post permanent vacation tune) thats it.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 January 2003 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Doesn't stand up good next to Rocks or Toys In The Attic.

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 17 January 2003 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't be the only one who thinks "Janie's Got a Gun" is one of the worst songs ever.

Of course Permanent Vacation doesn't match Toys In the Attic. But I wonder if it may have actually been a solid tuneful 80s stadium rock album all the same.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I think "Dude Looks Like a Lady" is terrific! The Alicia trilogy is horrendous, though, but I think "Jaded" was a bit of a comeback.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 17 January 2003 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought "Let the Music Do the Talking" (from DONE WITH MIRRORS, not the Joe Perry Project original) was an overlooked gem.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 17 January 2003 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Reason a Dog" and "She's on Fire," both from Done With Mirrors, are worth hearing as well.

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 17 January 2003 05:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Remember that video game with Aerosmith called Revolution X? You shoot jack-booted thugs while you listen to mid-90's Aerosmith tunes!

Polo Pony, Friday, 17 January 2003 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Pfah. Pump is a fantastic album, and it doesn't sound quite as dated as the singles from Permanent Vacation, although I love the singles from it.

Then came Alicia Silverstone and things went to shit, though I don't blame her ENTIRELY. But she definitely had a major hand in ruining the band.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 17 January 2003 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hangman Juruy" and "St John" were kinda cool. The Zappa quote is funny. I could've done without the whale noises tho

dave q, Friday, 17 January 2003 07:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"St. John" is a great song.

I want to see someone defend "The Movie."

I haven't heard it in ages, but wasn't "The Movie" and instrumental track? I remember liking Perry's guitar tone in that song.

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

thirteen years pass...

I kinda feel like, although it was nowhere near their forte, this album manages to be a pretty decent "pop/hair metal" album at times. "Angel" is overwrought and nauseating, but "Magic Touch" is p catchy.

but that's my 15 year old ears talking and maybe it sounds like diarrhea to me now, who knows. we can all probably agree "(Dude) Looks Like a lady" is an abomination, no?

Neanderthal, Thursday, 18 August 2016 00:18 (nine years ago)

one year passes...

I hate this fucking thing.

five years pass...

You know what kills “dude looks?” The horns. Would love to hear a rocks era version

calstars, Sunday, 11 June 2023 17:28 (three years ago)

Probably the reason why pump sounded so back to basics to my teenaged ears…those guitar runs on “elevator”
