Cocteau Twins: best intro probably the singles comp "Stars and Topsoil," though my very favorite is Victorialand -- utterly gorgeous expectation-defying album that jettisoned the drums and just sort of floated around

Califone, I don't know

Killing Joke: I'd say that the best intro is What's THIS For...! My favorite is still the first album, but the second one gives you a sense both of what they'd been & where they were going. But Alex is the man to ask about this.

...and not consult me??!?!?!?!

In all seriousness, I'd say the first album is a good starting point. If that fails to grab you, chances are you won't enjoy the rest of their stuff (although their mid-80's period leans awkwardly towards a poppier sensibility). WHAT'S THIS FOR...? is indeed a more rhythmic beast, but the eponymous debut handily encapsulates their mission statement and original approach.

Pink Opaque is pretty sweet for Cocteau, def. first album KJ wise.

I wish I knew Califone better, but really I think anything would be fine to start with them. Haven't heard about any major mistakes in their discography yet.

Haha, I have no idea! That's why I asked.

Thanks everyone.

Actually I think the best intro to the Cocteau's is one of the great EPs like Akai-Guinea or Echoes in a Shallow Bay.

First time I heard 'em was Pink Orange Red ... and my life was transformed.

yeah, Pink Opaque for cocteaux, then as t\'\'t suggested

The first Cocteau Twins album I heard was 'The Pink Opaque' so it definitely worked, but I'd probably go for 'Stars and Topsoil' as J0hn suggested.

First Cocteau Twins I ever listened to and which made me a fan: Heaven or Las Vegas. A lot of the early Cocteau Twins somehow doesn't do it for me.

Califone? I liked Sometimes Good Weather Follows Bad People which assembles several EPs. A challenging listen.
