Who truly were the gods of soft rock? better ballad, "i wanna know what love is" or "lost in love"? i'm a little biased towards foreigner as they had great hair but i don't know what air supply look like.

> i'm a little biased towards foreigner as they had great hair but i don't know what air supply look like.

Hie thee hence, Di, for a bio and picture of Air Supply.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i've changed my mind... air supply were definitely the masters of schmaltz. thanx for the link Tadeusz Suchodolski.

di, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Air Supply was more about femininity , Foreigner more about Rock n Roll pussy. You can't really compare them.

Mike Hanley, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i have found myself enjoying "lost in love" while stoned on pot. which proves that the stuff anti-pot advocates say is probably all true. to enjoy a foreigner ballad tho' i think i'd need to be on a bunch of downs & shit. I do think some of their "rockers" are good tho' - "Dirty White Boy" especially.

duane zarakov, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Apples & Oranges, Di, you cannot compare them. Air Supply never claimed to be a 'rock' band, and had much more in common with "lite" outfits like Ambrosia, Firefall, Poco and the like.

Foreigner, meanwhile, no matter how middle-of-the-road they may seem, were more of the genuine article as a "rock band." Moreover, nine tenths of Air Supply's catalogue consists of ballads, whereas Foreigner's ballads ("I've Been Waiting,""I Wanna Know What Love Is", etc.) were fewer and further between. A fairer comparison might be to, say, REO Speedwagon, Journey or Bad Company.

Anyone going to 'fess up to liking either of these acts? (No, not me -- I don't).

I guess it would come down to "if someone put a gun to yer head ..." In which case I'd pick Air Supply (and kindly beg my assailant for either earplugs or insulin for the saccharine OD to ensue), if only because Foreigner pretty much epitomizes Seventies stadium buttrock. That, and Lou Gramm = Eddie Vedder avant la lettre.

Given the anti-rockist stance of many on ILM, I suspect others would make similar choices (though for their own reasons).

Boston. 'I see my Maryann walking away.' Good question though!

Maryann, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

an evil demon whispered in my ear . . . soft hard rock, hard soft rock, soft soft rock, or medium soft hard rock?

Maryann, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Anyone notice Foreigner's strange (male) "virginity" fixation? "Feels Like the First Time", "Waiting For a Girl Like You", "I Want to Know What Love Is"? Maybe explained their popularity with a certain demographic?

tarden, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

For those too cool to rock, I saw Air Supply in June 96 at the Twin Towns RSL club - and they rocked bigger than Poison. So therefore I object to the tense of the question and declare Air Suplly the kings and queens of soft rock. Can't live if living is without them.

I hear the Jeremy Scott edition Foreigner t shirt is a must-have fashion item for the ironic art fag.

Momus, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Air Supply's good songs: "Lost In Love"

Foreigner's good songs: "Cold As Ice", "Dirty White Boy", "Urgent", "I Want To Know What Love Is", "Hot Blooded"

We have a winner !

Patrick, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Air Supply's good songs: eh?

Foreigner's good songs: what Patrick said, plus "Waiting for A Girl Like You," "That Was Yesterday," "Say You Will," "Double Vision," maybe "Head Games."

We have a winner!

Ye gods, isn't this whole rock t-shirt trend passe yet? I admit Missy looked pretty cool in the Motorhead get-up, but other than that...

I have always been fascinated with Peter Cetera's "You'r ethe Inspiration". Its so odd to me. I dont knwo why. Maybe becasue its supernormal.

LOVERBOY!

Canada comes through! Again!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Loverboy !

Search: "Turn Me Loose" (disco-metal !), "Queen Of Broken Hearts", maybe "Lovin' Every Minute Of It" (written by Shania Twain's husband !) as well.

Two words for you, sir: GLASS TIGER.

(Loverboy, Glass Tiger, Rush, Celine Dion, Bryan Adams -- Canada's got a lot to answer for ... and Neil Young and Plasticman can't absolve all of that dreck ...)

Mike Hanley - what does supernormal mean?

Maryann, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Good thread - but why has no-one mentioned Icehouse?

the pinefox, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Because Icehouse belongs in the Savage Garden thread.

tarden, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Why?

the pinefox, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Because they explored the existential solitude of endless earth-toned lapidary stillness in a way that, say, Night Ranger did not.

tarden, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Icehouse did, I mean.

tarden, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Night Ranger !

Patrick, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

First of all, Tarden...for that last assessment of Icehouse, you're a genius. (Gut-wrenchingly enough, Icehouse was covered "Love Like Blood" by my beloved Killing Joke...to stomach-turning effect).

Back on the topic at hand, have to say I've always dug the track "Long, Long Way from Home" off Foreigner's first album. Sue me.

alex in nyc, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Apologies,....that should be Icehouse ONCE covered "Love Like Blood," not WAS covered...etc.

Too much Iced Coffee today.

Geoff, Saturday, 9 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Icehouse's 'Crazy' has to be my favourite soft rock number ever. Unless Pat Benatar counts, in which case I suppose it has to be 'Love Is A Battlefield'.

the pinefox, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Leo Sayer, anyone?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hey tadeusz, there's no need to get violent on us. We have the depths of Lionel Richie, Johhny Logan, Glen Medeiros and Swing Out Sister before we pluge into mr sayer's oevre..patience I say, patience.

Geoff, Sunday, 10 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Leo Sayer, did anyone mention him in the "most common junk records" thread? 'cause he's up there. that album where on the cover he's falling thru the sky with an expression of fake surprise on his face (it's a watered-down version of a classic r'n'r facial expression - copying Paul McCartney copying Little Richard. The falling-thru-the-sky motif = model's own), how many copies of that fucker did the world's petroleum resources (or whatever it is they use) get wasted on? & does anybody actually like it (him)? Tadeusz, surely not?

Maryann Supernormal is when something tries so hard to be normal and mainstream and like everything else that it actually collapses on itself like a neutron star becoming a black hole.

-- Mike Hanley, Monday, 11 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Was Icehouse's version of "Love Like Blood" better than or worse than Paul Young's version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart"?

two years pass...
back on topic folks!

I have been obsessed with air supply recently! I never liked them before but something about the arrangements fascinates me suddenly. It started with hearing 'Making Love Out Of Nothing At All' on the radio (the same song as 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart'! written by the same guy! wtf?) and then when I looked them up I remembered songs like 'All Out Of Love' and 'Even The Nights Are Better' (which I always remember hearing in the movie theatre in the 80s before the previews started). I don't think this has anything to do with rock and roll, it's just the bombast and arrangement that's got me, and that's normally not something I'm really seeking out in music.

"Making Love" was a Jim Steinman job, so there's a reason for that.

John, meanwhile, is walking through the park and reminiscing.

Standing in the rain, with his head hung low
Couldn't get a ticket, it was a sold out show
Heard the roar of the crowd, he could picture the scene
Put his ear to the wall, then like a distant scream

He heard ONNNNNEEEE GEEEETTTAAAAAARRRR!!!!! just blew him away
He saw stars in his eyes, and the very next day
Bought a beat up six string in a secondhand store
Didn't know how to play it, but he knew for sure

That one guitar, felt good in his hands
Didn't take long, to understand
Just one guitar, slung way down low
Was one way ticket, only one way to go

So he started rockin'
Ain't never gonna stop
Gotta keep on rockin'
Someday he's gonna make it to the top

And be a JUKE BOX HERO, got stars in his eyes
He's a JUKE BOX HERO
He took one guitar, JUKE BOX HERO, stars in his eyes
JUKE BOX HERO, he'll come alive tonight

In a town without a name, in a heavy downpour
Thought he passed his own shadow, by the backstage door
Like a trip through the past, to that day in the rain
And that ONE GEETAR! made his whole life change

Now he needs to keep rockin'
He just can't stop
Gotta keep on rockin'
That boy has got to stay on top

And be a JUKE BOX HERO, got stars in his eyes
He's a JUKE BOX HERO, got stars in his eyes
Yeah, JUKE BOX HERO, got stars in his eyes
With that one guitar he'll come alive
Come alive tonight

Yeah, he's gotta keep rockin'
He just can't stop
Gotta keep on rockin'
That boy has got to stay on top

And be a JUKE BOX HERO, got stars in his eyes
He's a JUKE BOX HERO, got stars in his eyes
Just one guitar, put stars in his eyes
He's just a JUKE BOX HERO, aah aah aah
JUKE BOX HERO, JUKE BOX HERO, he's got stars in his eyes
Stars in his eyes

Foreigner may have become crap later one, but weren't that bad in the 70s really. Plus LondonLee is right about "Waiting For a Girl Like You" (although "one of the best singles of the 80s" is a bit too much, really...)
