this wont make it especially any better than when Carl Craig did it will it...oh wait, there were some problems with him weren't there?

"Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will announce May's selection at a press conference this evening.

May said Thursday night the contract was on his desk at his Transmat Records office in Detroit, waiting to be signed."

uh, these sentences are so CLASSIC that they make my entire day!!!

Yup. Carl is back in the fold... there was a "falling out" with Carol Marvin and Pop Media and he was axed last year (it's hard to say anything nice about her but I'll leave it at that). So basically it's May, Carl Craig, and Saunderson doing the booking/planning.

Kwame is the dopest mayor in the country.

Craig's degree of involvement has been a little more speculative than what might be suggested in the coverage thus far.

i've read several people (including detroit producers) talking about detroit and how no one there is into techno, how there's maybe one club there that plays it,about 250 enthusiasts, etc
so is this just an exaggeration to make it look more "underground"?
i mean,if the mayor is announcing derrick may's choices for a festival, surely techno has a higher profile in detroit that has been implied?

robin (robin), Saturday, 18 January 2003 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

"The free event, which attracted more than 1 million fans to Hart Plaza last May"
i mean, the impression i always got was that a lot of people within detroit wouldn't even be aware that detroit techno existed, that it was only well known in europe, etc
did i get all this completely wrong?

"did i get all this completely wrong?"

No.

The DEMF has definitely raised um awareness, however.

i am still angry that i didn;t get a pro-carl badge when i went to the second year of the festival. i was too tired to really enjoy most of the djs as i slept under a desk in my hotel room. 11 of us piled into one double. it was a mess. my favorite moment was alton miller playing "off the wall" during his set.

i had heard rumors years ago that marvin wanted to bring in more commercial acts like madonna. i have nothing against madonna, but marvin was obviously missing the point.

Kwame is so dope that Chris Rock apparently is basing a character for an upcoming TV show on him. Serious.

i was at dinner in Detroit last week and this fleet of cars pulls up. 10 minutes later, out pops Kwame and his entourage. we all laughed at the absurdity of his more than ample security. anyhow, when he walked in, he gave this kinda half-wave to the crowd, eyes half-open, as if to say "wasssup, yo!"

ken taylrr, Friday, 24 January 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Kwame is by far the dopest mayor in America, Ken. It wouldn't been cool if he said, "Hizzzonor is in the hizzzouse."

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 2 May 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Any festival that can feature Wolf Eyes, Theo Parrish, Slum Village, ESG and Jeff Mills is okay with me! I don't think I've been this excited about the festival since the first year.
