S&D: Polyrock (thanks, VH1 Classic Rock!)

I've been watching Classic VH1 constantly and a video by some group I'd never heard of called Polyrock was on last night (the song was "Romantic Me"). They sounded kind of like a more emotional Feelies with some keyboards. I loved it! Allmusic has star ratings but no reviews, so I was wondering if any of you had heard this band and can tell me if they're any good. RCA put their albums out, but ROIR has a retrospective so I assume they have a bit of cred.

Other group's with at the very least flamboyant videos that I'd never heard of that were on last night: The Cruzados, Fay Ray, King.

Btw, if you have digital cable and haven't checked this channel out yet...do! For crying out loud, I've seen TWO Arcadia videos so far. and two Jesus & Mary Chain videos. Not to mention Robert Plant & Martin Short declaring their love for Innerspace and twisting the night away. Plus Bette Midler singing "Beast Of Burden" to Mick Jagger. There's some boring crap too, but I'd rather the novelty of a lame Peter Cetera video to a Mariah Carey one.

But anyway, yeah...polyrock! Anybody know these guys?

It's called VH1 Classic.

Polyrock! Philip Glass produced their first album, on which "Romantic Me" appears. I remember seeing them on Nickelodeon's Livewire as a kid. I think they only released that first album, _Changing Hearts_ and a third, but not sure.

My bad. Oh, and it was Rod Stewart and Martin Short with the Innerspace bit. Not Robert Plant (my god, what an even ghastlier notion).

ooh ooh, which Jesus and Mary Chain videos??? and which King video? "Love & Pride"?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Head On & Just Like Honey. Just Like Honey was hysterical...they looked like they were gonna nod off. I was really worried they had all OD'd. And King had some number called Would You Hold My Hand or something. He looked like a more macho version of Dead Or Alive (and is that former XTC keyboard Barry Andrews in the band???). There's also been videos by Cocteau Twins (something off of Lonely Is An Eyesore comp), Lou Reed or Lou Reed-standin dancing like a madman in "I Love You Suzanne", Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation" (wow...my surly fantasy!) and so so so so so many more. I've already filled one six hour tape and am an hour through the next. And I'm trying to be picky.

I had that Polyrock album "Change of Heart" what, 20 years ago? IIRC, it was on Statik, same label as the Chameleons.

And oh my gosh, that "I Love You Suzanne" video; I thought I had erased that from my memory.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

No, wait I didn't have a record by Polyrock. It was Positive Noise who recorded "Change of Heart" for Static.

And I just checked AMG and got nothing; was it Positive Noise spin-off band Leasure Process who sang the song "Love Cascade"? Is anyone New Wave enough to remember this besides me?

I still own Changing Hearts on vinyl. It's sitting in my office with all the rest of my lps, which I can't play at home because I no longer own a turntable. I could dub a CDR but I'm not particularly interested; I suppose I kept it because of the Philip Glass connection.

Anyway, there's a little bit here at the trouser press site. (Not much, however.)

two years pass...
I picked up the first two albums yesterday..

..and well, I just kinda realized that the Arcade Fire are kinda like the Polyrock of today, but with more turkey gobbling in the timbre.

Holy shit they're on CD now!! Oh man this is so exciting. I so remember getting a "Romantic Me" 7" off eBay and listening to it nonstop.

three years pass...

First album was #76 in this top 80s albums list a few years ago.

I'd heard the name over the years but who knew they'd be worth listening to! Not sure about being one of the best of the decade, but definitely interesting.
