Not one single song!

Are there any?

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 18 January 2003 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

My vague theory being that for an artist to get to the point where a best-of is commercially released they must have had *one* OK single at least.

In my experience there was a Van Morrison best-of I once got out of the library but I can't totally remember what was on that so I can't actually cite it.

Shaq has a greatest hits album out. Anybody wanna vote for "What's Up Doc Can We Rock?" as his winner?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 18 January 2003 01:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Starship might qualify too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 18 January 2003 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Celine Dion done one yet?

Dave Beckhouse (Dave Beckhouse), Saturday, 18 January 2003 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

There has to be an actual best of in the shops (incl. online shops) to qualify.

Starship might qualify but it's still a bit of a cheat cos of the name change.

'Too Shy' is great Evan!

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 18 January 2003 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

obvious choice but perhaps the Westlife Greatest Hits? unfortunately i discovered my Mum has it...this really does disappoint me somehow, but if she's happy...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 18 January 2003 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

OK then, how 'bout Madonna's The Immaculate Collection? The problem is not the actual songs, it's that 1. everything's remastered in Q-Sound, which makes everything sound totally dead (listen to it on headphones to hear what I'm saying. The two channels don't mix at all.), and 2. Madonna hired Shep Pettibone to remix the entire disc, which means "Like a Virgin" quickly fades out thirty seconds before you expect it to, "Papa Don't Preach" segues into "Open Your Heart" for no apparent reason, and "Into the Groove" now has a pointless piano solo. Hell, he even flat-out destroys "Like a Prayer"! HOW IN THE HELL CAN ANYBODY DESTROY "LIKE A PRAYER"?!?!?!?

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 18 January 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, that new best of Bowie just about does it for me. I think I'll be getting that, hmm, today. Bonus: I'm Afraid of Americans PLUS both songs about Major Tom

Tom Millar (Millar), Saturday, 18 January 2003 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

matt bianco.

also - evan was there any other record actually mastered
in Q sound ? it was a big hoo-ha at the time
of the immaculate collection reviews, but didn't seem
to do a massive amount for the sound.
10 points to anyone who can name the ltd. edition mini-album issued
to coincide with the immaculate collection featuring hits
that weren't on said best of. i'll have to hurry you.

piscesboy, Saturday, 18 January 2003 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

They are on a best of = they are not good. Sheesh.

bahtology, Saturday, 18 January 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Chicago must have a greatest hits album. Billy Joel has a couple. How about Cher?

Michael Jackson's DANGEROUS, George Michael's LADIES AND GENTLEMEN... THE BEST OF GEORGE MICHAEL, and Roger Waters' AMUSED TO DEATH are the only three I can think of right now, and I'm not even sure if those are right.

uhhhh... The Royal Box? Nah, it can't be. I have no idea.

Evan (Evan), Saturday, 18 January 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Should have mixed it in dubly.

David Bowie as musician, sucks ass. David BOwie as clothes hanger, okay.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Sunday, 19 January 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

the best of Baha-Men has at least two grebt songs

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 19 January 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

'bowie's greatest hits' = LODGER

did mc skat kat have a best-of? he may qualify

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 19 January 2003 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The Bowie best of is a fantastic collection.

My only gripe is the artwork - absolutely awful. For a man who is obsessed with art - his own artwork seems to leave much to be desired.

Just finished reading 'Loving the Alien', a Bowie biog. Strange, strange man. Interesting, though.

russ t, Monday, 20 January 2003 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
Oh come on, don't diss bowie, he was a champ. sure some of his songs sucked arse.

Oh, and CD's that realy suck - BEST of 19** or (now) 20** FUCK THEY SUCK. BEST ROCK HITS by sumfin like SONY?!?!? fuck, or all that pop shit they jam onto CDs so little pre-pubescent girls can think they are cool

Boy With No Future, Monday, 12 May 2003 07:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The answer's obvious - it has to be "HITS" by Phil Collins.

Incidentally this title is also probably the most glaring example of a major typographical error on the front of an album sleeve having been allowed to pass undetected through all the proof-reading procedures that it should have been subjected to (think about it....).

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 12 May 2003 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Phil Collins has "In The Air Tonight" and "Against All Odds" which are good and great respectively. Everything else is dreadful.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 12 May 2003 08:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm afraid my loathing of Phil Collins has reached the point where I can't even bear to listen to old Genesis songs if I can detect his whining voice anywhere in the backing vocals.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 12 May 2003 08:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Westlife own this thread without a doubt.
