My vote--the new Sigur Ros.

so if you thought you weren't listening to recorded music then what?

I think i know what you're saying but maybe not.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

This happens to me all the time. I'll be listening to song (x) and song (y) will be going through my head.

Curtis Stephens, Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I know Julio, it's another apallingly (over)worded title.

In short, it's a thread about music so dull that it fails to register. I think it's a dud already.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually this is interesting, there's been times when I went to put something on and something already WAS on. The last time this happened I think it was Kings of Convenience

dave q, Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

OK. I actually took it the wrong way: I thought that you were going to a 'higher state of conciousness' or some such and therefore couldn't register that you were ONLY listening to recorded music.

carry on...

I was stepping out the door of my flat to go out when I realised my stereo was still playing Lambchop's 'Is A Woman'. I had completely forgotten about it. It's so sedate the thoughts in my head actually drown it out utterly.

DavidM (DavidM), Sunday, 19 January 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad the thred title's over-worded.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 19 January 2003 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, screw it. Me too. let's stick it to these "writer" types....

Jus' kidding, guys.

They should put a sticker on their album that says "Warning, may put listener in coma"

Nordicskillz that is like the most glowing endorsement of ( ) I've ever read. Obviously they wanted you to (not) hear it that way.

Honda (Honda), Sunday, 19 January 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

This isn't the same thing, and I'm a bit sorry to do this so early in the thread, but something similar happened when I bought the double CD re-issue of "Underwater Moonlight" by the Soft Boys. I found that I remembered the album so well from having heard it (and many of the extra-tracks) years before that while I was listening to it, I felt like I was having trouble paying attention even though I was trying. It felt was like there was nothing more in the recording for me to hear any more, and that actually listening to it felt the same as just remembering it. It's a pretty odd feeling. Is it that those brain cells just CAN'T be used for anything else now, even if I wind up losing my apartment keys every second day?

tom (alternate), Sunday, 19 January 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Notoriously, it took me twenty minutes to realise that the Strokes album was even on.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 January 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The High Llamas and later Stereolab do this to me.

ASTRAL WEEKS.

piscesboy, Sunday, 19 January 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Aye, seconded on Astral Weeks and new Sigur Ros, but can I ask does anyone get this with books too? Cos, like, i'll have read 15 pages and realise NON of it has gone in because I was thinking about playing football, or moving to New Zealand, or cheesecake, or wine, or The Dismemberment Plan, or something.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 19 January 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

On several albums, Pere *bleet! blooot! blop!* Ubu

jesse malin

also, boring irish groups like the frames.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 19 January 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

That often happens for me with books - it doesn't have to do with whether or not I like the book or not; I usually go in fighting, attention-wise, and sometimes have to try several times until I'm more used to the book "surrounding" me.

tom (different one), Monday, 20 January 2003 05:51 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I regret having to say Kate Bush's "Aerial". I keep expecting having some kind of revelation but instead I just foregt it's there.

How about "Albums that fail to engage to such a degree that you can listen to them and forget that you are in fact listening to recorded music but then a noticeably irritating song comes on causing you to snap out of it and rip them off the stereo while crying, 'What a load of tripe!'"

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

the first and only time i ever heard it, pygmalion. ill give it another try when it's reissued, cause it wasnt an unpleasant experience at all, but i DEFINITELY forgot there was music on.

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

That sounds like it could be an interesting basis for a thread - "TS: Music That Actively Irritates You vs. Music So Boring It Doesn't Register At All", or something like that.
