Albums whose flip side is stronger

Or in our CD age, the second half is better. This seems to be a fairly rare occurence, at least in my experience. I'd pick as one example the Go-Betweens' "16 Lovers Lane."

Yet another category where I can namedrop Paul's Boutique. Also The Cold Vein and Electric Ladyland. I am tempted to be a smartass and nominate Meddle, but I won't.

Supermodified, but you have to start with it flipped already, i.e. first half is better.

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Monday, 20 January 2003 01:36 (twenty-three years ago)

The first half is great, but The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 20 January 2003 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing comes immediately to mind, but I still believe that the fourth fifth (tracks 7-9 of a ten song album) or so of an album is usually where you can tell what the band's on-autopilot sound is, and therefore how easy it is for them to make great music. They always save a good one for the end usually, but the middle of side 2 is the true test of a classic album. Bands who do better there on side one don't know what their strengths are.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 20 January 2003 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan is probably correct with Disintegration.
Also, Ocean Rain by Echo and the Bunnymen.
Mercury Rev - Yrself Is Steam
Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine

I think this happens more than you might have thought!

Clarke B., Monday, 20 January 2003 06:23 (twenty-three years ago)

fear of a black planet : b-side wins again and again

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 20 January 2003 06:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Disintegration was the album that immediately jumped to mind - good call. Also, Rage Against the Machine's debut.

Julien S. (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 20 January 2003 06:58 (twenty-three years ago)

when i bought my cassette copy of 'it takes a nation of millions' lo those many years ago, it was wound so side B was the opening side. until i rebought it on CD a few years back, i always thought the LP opened with 'show em watcha got', and i think i prefer that configuration...

stevie (stevie), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Prodigy - Music for the Jilted Generation
Prodigy - Fat of the Land
XTC - Wasp Star

This was much harder than I thought it would be.
