Does anyone else here think Arno Hintjens is the greatest?

I imagine you can find his CDs here in Canada on account of he often sings in French. I almost never see anything written about him in English, though, except one review of his old band T.C. Matic in, maybe, the Trouser Press or something, that I think missed out entirely. I don't like every song (i.e. "Music is the Dope" and "Jean Balthazarrr" I could happily do without), but I never get tired of "Mon Sissoyen", "Play the Guitar, Boy", "Whoop that Thing" or most of the other ones. I don't think he's ever going to lose it, either, even if he does roughly the same thing for twenty more years (which I think he sort of will and sort of won't - if you like him, you probably know what I mean).

Uh no, he's a slob. I quite like his TC Matic output but apart from that? Nah, fuck it, it all sounds the same. Which is not a bad thing per se...

But it would be if you didn't like it; I understand. And he often sings about how he smells bad. I think it's kind of like Nicola Piovani*, though, for film music - his music also often sounds really self-similar, but I think there's enough there in the first place that I'll gladly appreciate more sutble turns of attention, as opposed to someone like David Bowie**, who I get tired of in minutes despite that he's always, you know, whatever it is he does.

* (who likely smells fine)
**(you have no idea how I'm pronouncing this)

four years pass...

Like TC Matic and early Arno a lot. Just heard a couple of more recent LPs, "Charles Ernest" which has at least a couple of good songs ("Amor" & "Pas Heureux Ni Malheureux") and "A Poil Commercial" which consistently sucks save for maybe "J'ai Un Problème". His best tunes have a clever and catchy if simple gimmick, as if the damaged genius of his early stuff can't be repeated by doing the same sort of thing endlessly has was suggested by the thread starter. He needs to have a good idea and hammer it home for the schtick to work.

That smell thing is funny too, noticed it this time around only ("I only wash my armpits because of you", to a lover).

one year passes...

I had totally forgotten about TC Matic until Scott was playing some Gruppo Sportivo and it reminded me of when I first lived in the Netherlands in the early 90s and first heard Arno. I just had to play Ooh La La La about 20 times. It's like LCD Soundsystem mates with PIL.

This video was created in the new era, I think:
