Internal Wrangler rules. But what component is the rulesest?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 20 January 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Note that Clinic's singer also plays their melodica bits, and I think does the keyboards too.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 20 January 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

They all look the same in concert.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 20 January 2003 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Which is why I dunno their names (aside from the singer. He is called Ade Blackburn, and without the mask on he's a bit ming).

Then again, when I saw Clinic play live, they didn't have their attire, cos it got nicked. Which spoilt it a bit.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 20 January 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

whoever does the melodica and the keyboard

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 20 January 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

The drummer. it's all about the drums. I mean, the bassist plays only one-note slabs of basslines, and the keyboards are stabbing things, so it's all about those wonderful beasts of drums. Yeah.

kate, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, this is tough. Most of their strengths lie in their rhythm section, but on the other hand you've got the aforementioned keyboard & melodica. Jeez. Can I cop out and say "they are all tied for second, with the person who does their album covers at #1"?

(Pssst William they released another album, too, more recently, and it also rules)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

this is insaaaanely tough. However, if he wasn't responsible for the keyboards and melodica stuff the singer would easily be the least likable of the four. Bubblegum Thom Yorke will only take you so far, man.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Thom Yorke? As if. He always sounded like Gordon Gano to me.

kate, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh! nice kate. Hadn't occured to me. I still think overall they're the bubblegum radiohead (which often means their better), but I can see the Gano thing now too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

THOM BLINKING BLIMEY YORKE? bubblegum radiohead?! the rage! the rage! (i always thought of that guy from 22pistepirkko only even more wide-eyed and deranged but i suppose comparisons with more obscure bands are not helpful)

kate is right, Carl is one great great drummer, which i didn't appreciate until i'd seen them live a couple of times, but i think the fact that I didn't really notice that on the records suggests that this may not be the single crucial ingredient (not that i think there is just one). plus i love the drum-machine-only tracks as much as the ones with real drums.

this is too difficult, they all rock, so i will instead award my prize solely on the grounds of who is most cheerily friendly and patient to idiot fawning from idiot fans and vote for Brian (and, ahem, - just to follow on from the "bit ming" comment, you understand - the best looking too but he's just got married, sigh, er, I mean congrats). and there are, like, SIX notes in Walking With Thee's bassline, so no dissing!

ah, maybe i should just vote for whichever of ade or hartley did the organ on 2/4. yes, i have spent far too much time thinking about this kind of thing.

i think the real winner here is whoever engineers their records. the instruments all sound uniformly wonderful, as if coated in some dark lacquer that gives everything the perfect amount of sheen, but in a disquieting, slightly noxious way.

the great thing about clinic records is that if something sounds "off" it sounds "off" for a reason. i can't wait to hear what they do next. i hope it's a big big sound.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

One day I will actually hear them. I did pick up Walking With Thee recently, so that day might be soon.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't have a particular favourite member. but i like clinic quite a bit. "The Second Line", "Distortions" and "Walking With Thee" are fucking INCREDIBLE songs. If 2/3 of their albums were up to the same standards, they would be instant classics. Their other songs are good, but they pale in comparison. I like the coldness of their sound. I'm watching this space with interest, I think their masterpiece might not be far off...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"with the person who does their album covers at #1"?

Copying Ornette covers isn't all that brilliant.

hstencil, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

But it's coo-well!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

William is aware cos he got that ages ago. However, it was the same time at which he got Melys' singles comp, so it has barely been listened to. Pet Eunuch is not a patch on Hippie Death Suite, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
i was looking for a shirt in my bedroom and i found "internal wrangler" instead. (don't ask.) haven't listened to it in years. fuck me, "the second line" is good, innit? i'd completely forgotten how much i love that song. i didn't realise the melodica was the single most rock instrument in rock.

"winchester cathedral", their last album, is a real grower, btw. i was bitterly disappointed at first ("it's 'walking with thee' all over again!") but ... there's magic in them there surgeons' masks.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 22 July 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

hate to be a cliche, but their earlier stuff is their best. first couplea eps and IR for me.

live they were really awesome because they played every song at ramones speed - i thought british indie bands had forgotten how to kick ass sometime in the early '80s.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 22 July 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

i still haven't heard the last album. maybe one of these days.
