"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice" vs. "WHAT I CHOOSE IS MY CHOICE."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 02:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I say Rush; they have funnier videos.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

What if you just put off yr decision and end up not choosing by default? SP, tho both singers can be pretty annoying.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 02:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Both work for me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"well, yeah, no shit, Geddy" vs. "jesus! no shit, Billy!"

this is my idea of hell. jesus christ the idea of these two singing (esp. Billy in the pained "Disarm" strangled voice as opposed to his pretty "Turn My Way"/"Perfect" mode) at the same time is hell. hell hell hell. I liked Disarm when it came out. But I was in middle school and unhappy and a little boy in crush pain. So I can be forgiven. Rush always sounded too wanky for words. But I'll have to agree with Jody. At least Rush videos have that hysterical "if we play it you will see it. There's only keys when Geddy's not playing bass" absurdity. Though both bands have a certain "wait, do they actually exist on the same planet as me?" quality. REM does too.

Rush + Smashing Pumpkins: The Choice Of A Ned Generation

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't like rush, but i liked smashing pumpkins (until billy shaved his head and made adore, anyway).

so "disarm" is my answer.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

You make it sound like it's a bad thing, Anthony!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"What I choose is my choice" is just dumb, therefore Rush wins.

"Ack! How can JBR even THINK of comparing the two?"

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Rush! -- although I hope they're not responsible for all the copies of Atlas Shrugged I see people reading on the trains.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew, it's not just the singers that can be, and are, abominably annoying every so often...
...o well, having just re-listened to 'mellon collie' last night (much promted by ILM to do so),
it *could* be, f'me, and for curiosity's sake,
an equally half-an-ass-worth idea to listen to some soddin' Rush now too, but
1. i have no Rush whatsoever in my home
2. choosin' to choose, against all odds, i rather "choose" then that friggin' Styx rekkid, the name of which i'm unable to recall... from the early 19ยจรป0s, or whenever...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Disarm isn't my favorite Pumpkins song, but I haven't heard Rush, so therefore Disarm is better.

*continues to wow the crowd with his stunning logic*

Curtis Stephens, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

You are fifteen and don't listen to Rush? Get this boy 2112, stat!

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

"Disarm" is a beautiful pop song, and "Freewill" is a fairly straightforward (see: boring) Rush song. Besides, even Billy at his strangled worst is better than Geddy Lee's leprechaun-in-testicular-distress voice.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

(Amateurist, that wasn't even funny. and as for "seriously" ...)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Er, what?

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah but... y'know... The killer in me is the killer in you...

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

attention all rush fans:

isn't it weird that no matter who you are and how much you might pretend that you never loved rush when you were thirteen, when you see somebody dissing on rush it will never fail to produce waves upon waves of the most intense rage you've ever experienced

By-TOr For Fucking EVER

geeg, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

'Disarm' is possibly one of the most annoying songs ever recorded, so 'Free Will' wins by default

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I spent most of my teenage years trying to get all 10 of my Rush-worshipping friends to listen to the Clash. It didn't work. (I did get one of them to drive me and my sister to a Psychedelic Furs show, because he had a driver's license and we didn't. My sister and I loved the show; my friend looked like he was in considerable pain all the way through it and complained all the way home, even though we bought his ticket.) On the other hand, when I tagged along with all 10 of my Rush-worshipping friends to a show on the Power Windows tour, I got to see the guys in front of us snorting coke off their official Rush programs, which seemed kinda exciting to me at the time. So, um, Rush!

Jesse Fox (Jesse Fox), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

(strange, this, strange -- never ever having 'loved' Smashing Pumpkins "for real", when subjected to all this Rush-rush, the sorry twat Corgan starts to suddenly, gradually appear more and more acceptable)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I got to see the guys in front of us snorting coke off their official Rush programs

hahahahahahaha!!!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 06:11 (twenty-three years ago)

>"well, yeah, no shit, Geddy" vs. "jesus! no shit, Billy!"<

I'm still laughing from reading that. And, thematically, that's just about the size of it, isn't it? I would choose Rush, though. There's a chance I'd still like some of their songs, like maybe something from "Grace Under Pressure" or whatever.

tom (other one), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"I'm free because I'm free of the need to be free" - Parliament

dave q, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 06:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesse, Rush's Power Windows tour was the first concert I ever attended! Marillion was the opening band! They sucked! All the Rush fans booed them!

And while there was no nose candy to be seen, I had the pleasure of experiencing my first "contact buzz"! Neil Peart's drum solo was awesome!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 07:54 (twenty-three years ago)

The opening band at the show I saw was Steve Morse's Dixie Dregs. They got booed too. Rush fans are pretty unforgiving ("Jeez, not a single song in 7/12 time. These guys suck!").

Jesse Fox (Jesse Fox), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I never bought Mellon Collie because I never really like the pumpks. So, having rarely heard it, I gots ta say I think Disarm is 'swell' - because of the swelling drumming & strings... I still dig it.. It's the only pumpks song that I like - but its only that swelling that makes it good.

On the other hand, Rush is crap. I know that's not a very well-articulated argument, but it's all the time I'm willing to give to Rush.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh please. As many crimes as Rush are invariably guilty of, they will *ALWAYS* be superior to the dreadful, bloated, pus-smeared offal that were the Smashing Pumpkins.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

That could be true, Alex.. I'm just thinking of this one song. I have no desire to hear anything else they've done. And Rush has had a few moments... .. but still, fuck'em.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"Disarm" is OK, probably among my least favourite songs from Siamese Dream. I liked "Free Will" even when I was anti-Rush, the snakey riff, the almost swinging rhythm, the gleeful guitar shredding, the ridiculous lyrics. I was disappointed they didn't play it this summer.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"Free Will," because the lyrics are funny, and because I fucking hate the Smashing Pumpkins with a fiery passion beyond words.

J (Jay), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I much prefer both bands to the Clash BTW.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

In Toronto Smashing Pumpkins covered Rush! Those pieces of shit.

A, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

What does Ayn Rand Think??

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

WWARD?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

seven years pass...

Corgan tells a funny/embarrassing story in the new Rush doc about how he forced his mother to sit down and listen to "Entre Nous" when he was growing up.

J, Saturday, 12 June 2010 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

I'm gonna choose not to choose.

Lady, Saturday, 12 June 2010 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

Billy's Rush fervor is. Clearly his best quality. I can't think of any others...
