and first person who says "Superstition" loses.

T. Weiss (Timmy), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"Living for the City"

T. Weiss (Timmy), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:36 (twenty-three years ago)

"Superstition" is the disqualifier? What about fookin' "I Just Called to Say I Love You?!"

Arguing is unnecessary, though. I pick "I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)."

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

All day Sucker

or

You met your match

geeg, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"Boogie on Reggae Woman"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Awww you stole mine (ever hear the Larry Goldings version with Maceeo Parker?). I'll go for I Wish instead.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

so this is obviously a kind of negative of the 'albums flip side' thread -- for the first=earlier half(-or-so) of Stevie's "Song Review" compilation is extremely hard to find fault with, and that's evidently the Wonder era i'm a-gonna go for -- up to the late-70s/'80 time, whence loadsa brilliant songs originate...
okeh, if OPO - the whole "Talking Book" album

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"As" kicks ass.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 06:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"Uptight"

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 08:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I lose. 'Superstition'. But there are some other fine choices listed above.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Mr. Diamond

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

POO? ouch.

'you've got it bad girl'.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"i was made to love her" springs instantly to mind.

Fran, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh man, his cover of "We Can Work It Out", easily. I've never heard a song that... stabs as hard as that one does.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello 'Maybe Your Baby'

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

"He's Misstra-Know-It-All" is easily my most-played song at the moment.

The second half of Song Review has all his ace 60s singles! It's only the 90s soundtrack songs at the very end that are awful.

I quite like "I Just Called..."

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I love his cover of 'Light My Fire'

Paul R (paul R), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus Children of America comes to mind.

Rommel Cox, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Only ONE!?! But that's MADNESS!!!

Either "Too High" or "Living for the City" or "Mistra Know-it-All" or "Golden Lady"...can you tell I like Innervisions?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I second 'As'.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

"Step Out Tonight". Hahahahahaha! Tough luck Noel!

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I second "Uptight."

Burr, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you love

God Bless the Child

If You Really Love Me (love Norman Jay for always playing this out even though it is impossible to dance to cos of the slow bits throughout)

blueskies, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"Angie Girl", but "More Than A Dream" is the track I'd like to hear right this instant.

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:17 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
"Golden Lady" or "Contusion"

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 8 November 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

don't you worry bout a thing, i suppose

ron (ron), Saturday, 8 November 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Tough... too tough. But in the end there is only "Summer Soft."

(I just saw the video for "Do I Do" on BET "grown folks' music" video show, and it was wonderful. Mr. Dizzy Gillespie's cheeks have never been bigger, and the overall setting in a swingin'-swangin' disco is occasionally invaded by strange insert shots of what looks like an African tribe tribal dancing.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 8 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It wasn't clear, but that aside was meant to imply that "Do I Do" is always nipping at the heels of "Summer Soft" for the title of my favorite Stevie track. So does "Golden Lady."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 8 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"All in Love is Fair" breaks my damn heart.

Not that I would ever pick only one.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 8 November 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

change mine to "I was made to love her"

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 8 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i like "i believe when i fall in love" best but i'm coming around to "evil"

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 8 November 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, man. "Evil" is one of those songs that, when I'm not listening to it, doesn't seem to be all that special, but when I'm listening to it, with that gut-wrenching slow build and endless series of key changes, absolutely floors me.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 8 November 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fingertips, Part 2"

Haikunym (Haikunym), Saturday, 8 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

am I the only ilxor who prefers 60s stevie to 70s stevie?

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, JB, you are.
you would have a real good point
if you argued it

but the 'control' thing
is such a potent symbol!
(come on, dude was BLIND!)*

*footnote: I typed "BLING" instead of "BLIND". True either way!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Saturday, 8 November 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sir Duke.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Sunday, 9 November 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"They Won't Go When I Go" is sooooooo much better of any than his more famous hits.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 9 November 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 9 November 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Black man

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

At the absolutely drunkest you have ever been, would you really let a blind man drive your car instead?

I'll second "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing," on the strength of the intro alone. If I'm allowed a 60s pick too I'll third "Uptight".

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 10 November 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Teenage Stevie - I'm tempted to say "I Was Made To Love Her", except I truly don't know the value of Wonder's contribution to the song - I've never been able to stop listening to James Jsmerson's bass playing long enough to evaluate the rest of the song. So I'll go with "Uptight", for its sheer unstoppable propulsion.

Adult Stevie - "Big Brother." The way he makes his keyboards approximate acoustic guitars, for that dose of protest-music authenticity, is remarkable.

These choices aren't eternal, obv.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

My God is Blue Note Plays Stevie Wonder terrible!!!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Superwoman"

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

a totally impossible task, but i third 'i believe' if only for the gorgeous Arp swells at the beginning, the soaring chorus and the super-funky end bit.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Masterblaster". But dissing "Superstition" = deafness.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Was anyone dissing "Superstition"? I think the idea of the first post was that it was too common an answer or something.

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

(Geir has in the past, but not on this thread.)

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"As"

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sir Duke"

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, "Superstition" is still incredibly boring and repetitive. If not as bad as "Higher Ground".

Thankfully there are a lot of wonderful melodic ballads to make up for that.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 23 December 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It's repetitive, but it's such a bouncy rhythm. I guess it's subjective, but I certainly don't find it boring.

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 23 December 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bouncy" isn't the right word, but I mean, it's just like the rhythm is all over the place.

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 23 December 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
I'm with Luna and whoever else though I've only heard 'talking book': 'I believe (when I fall in love it will be forever)'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 14 January 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ten months pass...
"sir duke"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 5 December 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

"For Once In My Lifetime" is like shooting up with pure joy

R. J. Greene, Monday, 5 December 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

the ol' ipod shuffler has been giving "Do I Love Her" lots of love lately. It's my favorite now. With Stevie, that's all you can do. Next year I'll have another favorite Stevie song.

footlog, Monday, 5 December 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

This thread makes me happy, but not as happy as "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing."

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 5 December 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Dom OTM on "We Can Work It Out."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 5 December 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

Was I really talking to Geir up there, or was that a Geir imitator?

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Monday, 5 December 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

alfred otm about dom being otm.

but my sappy little heart goes with "blame it on the sun" every time.

Sym Sym (sym), Monday, 5 December 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

the second half of "Ordinary Pain" should get some love up in here

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 5 December 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Rehearing "Skeletons" when reviewing the new album brought home how good the song was.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 5 December 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

"Do I Do"

Wow, this DJ Spinna house remix of "My Love Is On Fire" is hot!

Eric H., Saturday, 28 April 2007 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

About bloody time someone else reminded me of Mr. Wonder. This will be third time in a matter of weeks that Stevie Wonder has been mentioned to me, by three different people/sources and I'll be damned if I won't at least give "Another Star" a good try.

Bimble, Saturday, 28 April 2007 04:51 (nineteen years ago)

"Another Star" = best bridge of all time?

Eric H., Saturday, 28 April 2007 05:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'll go with "If You Really Love Me."

Tape Store, Saturday, 28 April 2007 06:24 (nineteen years ago)

"We Can Work It Out," today.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 28 April 2007 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

"For Once In My Life" is the single best song by anybody ever. Fact.

The Reverend, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

If I were to pick one from (as the past three answers were) Stevie's not-a-girl-not-yet-a-woman period, I think I'd go for "Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer."

Eric H., Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe no one has said "Visions" on this thread. The guitar/bass interaction on that is sooo pretty.

m bison, Saturday, 28 April 2007 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

He's Misstra-Know-It-All

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 28 April 2007 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

"Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," but I love the way "Golden Lady" keeps modulating at the end, and "We Can Work It Out" is the best Beatles cover ever.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Sunday, 29 April 2007 06:44 (nineteen years ago)

I love the way "Golden Lady" keeps modulating at the end

Totally. Not many can get away with that without it descending into clunky "THIS-IS-UNA-KEY-CHANGE" shat, but it sounds very natural in "Golden Lady".

The Reverend, Sunday, 29 April 2007 07:19 (nineteen years ago)

Four years and no one's said "Signed, Sealed, Delivered"? wtf?

musically, Sunday, 29 April 2007 07:38 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite is 'Uptight,' but I can't believe there are no votes for 'I Wish.'

nicky lo-fi, Sunday, 29 April 2007 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

'As'

pisces, Monday, 2 July 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

"I Was Made to Love Her" just nudges out "Uptight."

inhibitionist, Monday, 2 July 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

I love "As" so much, but I prefer the single version (or is it just an edit? Whatever, it's on a greatest hits comp) that cuts out the growly-voice section.

Lingbert, Monday, 2 July 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

"I Was Made To Love Her" just nudges out "If You Really Love Me" (as well as "Uptight").

Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants: "Black Orchid"
Hotter Than July: "Did I Hear You Say You Love Me"

Eric H., Tuesday, 3 July 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'd go with "Heaven Is Ten Zillion Light Years Away" or the live version of "Ribbon in the Sky" but that's mostly nostalgia speaking.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

Also "Haven't Done Nothing". Okay, must stop.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 00:22 (eighteen years ago)

70s: Boogie On Reggae Woman
80s: Lately

The Reverend, Monday, 9 July 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

My current stance:
60s: "My Cherie Amour"
70s: "You And I"
80s: "Lately"

Geir Hongro, Monday, 9 July 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)

Four years and no one's said "Signed, Sealed, Delivered"? wtf?

the opening chord sequence changed my goddamn life

J0hn D., Monday, 9 July 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)
